Rameau's Les Indes Galantes – This Sunday on Staatsoper.tv

As seen on Facebook:

Live and free of charge from Prinzregententheater: The festival premiere of Jean-Philippe Rameau's Les Indes Galantes!

With Anna Prohaska, Mathias Vidal, Lisette Oropesa, dancers of the Compagnie Eastman a.o.

Don't miss our online broadcast on www.staatsoper.de/tv!

Note: By my calculation, it should be on at 12:00 PM Eastern time in the U.S.
I’m sure it will be great, but it’ll be hard to live up to the visuals of Laura Scozzi’s production from Bordeaux (this is one of the safe-for-work images):

P.S: Next Sunday (July 31) is the new Die Meistersinger with none other than Jonas Kaufmann...and some other singers, probably. That will be an earlier start. Looks like I should have gotten a substitute organist.

Gratuitous Soprano Duet – Aber der Richtige (aus Arabella)

Sigh! I didn't get to see all of this in the live webcast. I am hoping an enterprising pirate...er...fan might have snagged 'n' shared it. Meanwhile, I found this kindly posted by the Bayerische Staatsoper. Anja Harteros and Hanna-Elisabeth Müller…

Sigh….that’s all…just…sigh!

Well, there is one more thing. I am tempted into a bit of fantasy opera casting. I am thinking, well, AH has sung the Marschallin, and HEM will be a marvelous Sophie (she makes her debut as Sophie in Amsterdam this fall). Who would be your choice of Octavian to place between them?

Must See Medici TV – Stars in Concert and Staatsoper Lulu

...and speaking of Thomas Hampson, here he is in concert, along with some other singers you may have heard of...

I haven't seen it yet, but it's on my holiday weekend to-do list.
Watch this at Medici.TV

And now for something completely different, there's this:

Watch the opera here on medici.tv

Thanks to MediciTV for sharing this for those of us who missed the live stream on StaatsoperTV. I watched Act 1 on Saturday, but had to give up at intermission. The storm was really messing with my internet connection. What I've seen and heard is impressive. DT's production seems to really suit the expressionist tone of the plot and music. (Lulu is my number-one top 20th century opera!)

And the cast is doing an exceptional job so far, featuring singers well-known for their Mozart interpretations (including two former Belmontes as Alwa and the Painter!) Watch this blog for a full review sometime soon.

Gratuitous Friday – JK to Appear in Meistersinger (but not till 2016)

Wow! Talk about antici-    pation!

Here's a preview of the new Meistersinger starring Jonas Kaufmann (and probably some other singers, too...) at the Bayerische Staatsoper. The new production will debut in May 2016. At least the interviews are thoughtfully subtitled auf English! I am sure we'll have a Staatsoper.tv opportunity to see this from afar, but they haven't (as far as I know) published the 2015/2016 broadcast schedule yet.

Meanwhile we do still have the (apparently quite bizarre, but it's hard to beat the singing) Manon Lescaut to look forward to this summer:

Lucia di Lammermoor Webcast from the Bayerische Staatsoper – February 8, 2015

Tune in to Staatsoper.TV on Sunday, February 1 8 to see the new Bayerische Staatsoper production of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor starring Diana Damrau and Pavol Breslik.

While we are waiting, check out the Staatsoper podcast (auf Deustch, natürlich), which contains some musical excerpts, including a bit of the mad scene (with glass harmonica!)

Updated 01/26/2015 per below note from Barbara. Thanks Barbara!

Neuenfels, Kaufmann, and Opolais – More about Manon Lescaut

I was going all nostalgic (for the summer...I have a short memory) and looking for the recording I made when BBC Radio 3 broadcast Manon Lescaut from the Royal Opera House. Of course that file has gone missing. After trolling the various disc drives where my music goes to hide, I gave up and googled it, thinking someone else must have recorded the broadcast.

Well, I did find it, for 7 bucks, which I don’t care to spend on a questionable mp3 download. But better yet, I found this:

Interviews with the director, conductor, and stars of the Bayerische Staatsoper production. It's amazing what you find when you're looking for something else!

I also found this trailer:

In Other Staatsoper News - Manon Lescaut vs. Hans Neuenfels

The new production of Manon Lescaut at the Bayerische Staatsoper is produced/directed by the ever divisive Hans Neuenfels (I love his work, but many don't!) Possibly redeeming the production (or in my case, making it even more exciting) are the two leads: none other than Jonas and Kristine!

The opera will be broadcast, but not till next summer. Meanwhile be on the lookout for (probably) scathing reviews of the production. See more pics at the Staatsoper website.

And here are a few reviews (I am sure there are more somewhere) to tide us over, tempt us, or make us certain we don't want to see it. (Check all that apply.)

The Bayersiche Staatsoper has kindly shared four short video excerpts from their webcast of La Clemenza di Tito. It's good to have another look.

Parto, ma tu ben mio – Tara Erraught at The Bayerische Staatsoper

Unfortunately, this clip is audio only, but it is “official” from the Staatsoper. I'm pretty sure it's not from last Saturday's broadcast, as I don't remember quite so much vibrato from Sesto*.  I am still on the lookout for a copy of the video (aren't we all?). I'm not sure I want to re-watch the whole opera, but I’d definitely like to re-view some of the arias and ensembles.

Tara Erraught (Sesto)
Markus Schön (Solo Clarinet)

Musical direction: Kirill Petrenko
Live recorded at the Bayerische Staatsoper on February 7, 2014

*After writing this I looked below the clip at Soundcloud and saw the date. Well boo on me for not reading, but kudos to me for noticing the difference. Tara Erraught sounds over-parted here (over-partoed?) but she didn’t seem so during the live broadcast. Maybe this was opening night jitters.

May the Forza be with You

Thanks to Intermezzo for finding us the virtually (and probably wisely) unsearchable capture of Saturday's broadcast. I saw most of it live, but experienced some live stream issues. I also missed the plot setup during the prelude, so I am glad to have a chance to catch up.

Although there are some incongruities in the staging, and Martin Kušej definitely sees the world through a “glass-half-empty” (or the toast landing on the floor, butter-side down) lens, I thought it was quite good overall. Of course, there’s some (really, really) wonderful singing, too! Get it before the toast gets cold!

La Forza del Opera Fans

The Staatsoper copyright police
capture another YT bootlegger.
Thanks to some enterprising opera fans, we have two video clips from Saturday's broadcast of Verdi's La Forza del Destino from the Bayerische Staatsoper, and two audio clips from the radio broadcast of the prima last week. Fingers crossed for full-length recordings (and keeping an eagle-eye out for them, as they will disappear as soon as we discover them!!)

I actually got to watch the broadcast on Saturday! I had trouble with the live-stream feed freezing in full-screen mode, and ultimately gave in to watching it in the small-screen version (better than not seeing it at all) after trying low, high, and HD transmission modes. (Hmmm, the only thing I didn't try was using IE instead of Chrome. I'll file that thought away for future troubleshooting.)  I have opinions, of course, about the production and performances (I liked both a lot), but I'll save those for later. Meanwhile, let's enjoy these clips!

Videos from December 28:

P.S. Sadly, the videos have vanished.

La Forza Del Destino from Staatsoper.TV on 12/29

It's not exactly a holiday standard, but it's still wonderful Christmas present from the Bayerische Staatsoper: Their new production (directed Martin Kusejthat should be interesting) of La Forza del Destino, starring my personal Traumpaar: Anja Harteros and Jonas Kaufmann.

From the looks of the trailer, it's bloody, violent, and sexy-(ish)! Hey, it's opera! That's what it's all about, isn't it? And it's coming to a computer screen near you on Staatsoper.TV – Saturday, December 28, at 18:00 Munich time, which, these days, should be Noon in New York City.

Die Frau Ohne Schatten in Munich – Follow Up

Since I postponed my weekend travel till tomorrow (Monday), I was able to catch some of Richard Strauss' Die Frau Ohne Schatten from Munich on Staatsopertv.de.

Unfortunately the sound and video were out of sync for most of Act 2, and I could never get Act 3 to start (I made the mistake of pausing during the intermission feature!)

What I heard was very good, and what I saw was very interesting (I did manage to see the toy-boy (and falcon-toy-boy) scenes.) I also thought the use of projections was really effective. I am sure it will show up somewhere soon for re-viewing. Meanwhile, what did you all think?

Die Frau Ohne Schatten in Munich – Online Tomorrow

One Night Only*: the Bayerische Staatsoper's new production of Die Frau Ohne Schatten starting at 6 PM (CET), which is around noon New York time on Sunday, December 1.

*If you are now singing a number from Dreamgirls in your head, you may be ga... a fan of Broadway musicals.
