Disney's Snow White at Williams-Sonoma

So, here's another fun shopping find I discovered while exploring Williams-Sonoma during their three day free shipping promotion. (Valid November 26, 2011 at 12:00 AM (PT) to November 28, 2011 at 11:59 PM (PT).) I have been flirting with the Marvel Cakelet pan and the Gingerbread Kids and the Train cakelets for a while, but haven't bitten yet. I have a small cake pan fetish and discovered these new offerings, darn it. I am really torn since I am not a Disney Snow White fan. But I enjoy novelty cake pans. Oh, the dilemmas! It's a Snow White and Seven Dwarfs Cakelet pan. Should I or shouldn't I?

But wait! There's more! Snow White cookie cutters...

And, oh no, Snow White cupcake kits! Well, these aren't as exciting, but they're in the collection, so I'll share them, too.

There are no affiliate links on this one and Williams-Sonoma doesn't know who I am. These are featured because they belong here. Over and out.

Rapunzel Cake by Barbara Jo

We all know I have a love for edible art and so I went looking for Rapunzel themed cakes and such.  This is from 2002 and appeared on the Do It Myself blog, a now defunct blog featuring the work of two sisters, Barbara Jo and Barbara May.  Barbara Jo created this cake.  Here's her description:

I assembled the tower then covered it with jelly beans and non-pariels. I then added details like Tart N Tinies and dragees and drew vines and flowers on the tower with royal icing. I drew the flowers and the hanging tower details with royal icing on wax paper. After they dried, I attached them. The grass is royal icing, applied with a grass decorating tip, with individual blades added between the "paving stones." Rapunzel, the prince, and the witch are colored rolled fondant, which I made from scratch, with royal icing details and rainbow sprinkle irises.

Candies used:

Large and small jelly beans, pink and white mint lozenges, Snowcaps, large and small non-pariels, Necco wafers, chocolate rocks, Tart N Tinies, gold and silver dragees, rainbow sprinkles, royal icing, rolled fondant

That's dedication because this is one of the most detailed I've seen with all of the piece work it required.  And all that candy looks like flowers.  (Am I strange if I mention that the tower reminded me of Rapunzel's braided hair in Tangled?  If you've seen it, hopefully you know what I mean and don't think I'm bonkers!)

Just For Fun: Castle Cake Pans

After planning the two previous cake pan posts for this week, I realized I couldn't leave off the castles.  They are what got me started on this little mini-obsession and really can go with almost any fairy tale theme.

Nordic Ware 57724 Pro Cast Castle Bundt Pan

Just for Fun: Gingerbread House Cake Pans

Yesterday I featured Gingerbread Man inspired cake pans. Today I had to add Gingerbread Houses to the mix since we cannot forget Hansel and Gretel when baking and gingerbread is on the brain...

And some kits:

I really wish Nordic Ware or one of the others would get creative and do a Princess and the Pea/Sleeping Beauty themed pan.  Wouldn't that be fun?

Just for Fun: Gingerbread Man Cake Pans

So Halloween is gone and we all have the winter holidays on the immediate horizon which often involve lots of sweets and eating whichever ones you celebrate.  Another one of my minor obsessions is cake pans and baking.  I own quite a few novelty cake pans and this is the time of year I begin to think about adding a new pan to my collection, either for myself or through my gift wish list. (I am notoriously hard to buy for since books and hats are my main addictions.)  This year I chose the village at Williams-Sonoma since it sold out before I could get it last year, but there were some other temptations.  Today, I present the Gingerbread Boys and Girls:

Wilton Gingerbread Boys and Trees Pan

Nordic Ware Gingerbread Loaf Pan

Wilton Gingerbread Boy Ginger Bread Girl Christmas Holiday Snowman Clown Cake Pan Mold (2105-3313, 1998)

Now doesn't that make you want to go read a fairy tale, say, The Gingerbread Man, again?

Fairytale Cakes: 17 Enchanted Creations by Noga Hitron

Fairytale Cakes: 17 Enchanted Creations

My seven-year-old niece was in town last week which required a trip to the bookstore for book browsing, discussing and purchasing.  Of course, we discovered Fairytale Cakes: 17 Enchanted Creations by Noga Hitron on the shelf and it had to come home with me.  The cakes are stunning and I consider it more of a collection of unique fairy tale illustrations to be honest. I don't aspire to this level of artistry or perfection.  But I love looking at it. Alas, I didn't find any other images from the book to share...

Book description:

Every child has a favorite story, whether it’s about a little mermaid, an ugly duckling, or a brother and sister who meet a witch in a gingerbread house. And no matter how many times mom and dad tell that tale, it’s never enough; the young listener is hungry for more. So maybe it’s time to delight that young prince or princess with a magically decorated, hand-baked cake based on that beloved book.

All the necessary inspiration and instruction are here, from fondant fundamentals to creating shapes and forms. A short synopsis of the related story accompanies the cake, along with vibrant color photographs. Adults may think these sumptuous sweets look too good to touch—but kids will eat them right up!

On the other hand, John is very excited about this book.  He saw it by my desk and has picked it up a few times over the past week.  I admit I bought it for the pretty pictures but he wants to try to actually make one.  Since he is the resident fine artist, he may even manage to make something that resembles one of these cakes although I know his own interpretation will come through.  And edible modeling clay also thrills him.

And finally here are some other fairy tale/fantasy and cake inspired books:
