From a Cafe

New York ~ May 6, 2009
MoMA

It's funny, I thought the obvious thing with this photo would be to crop out the odd pieces on the sides and bottom, but it killed the photo. Leaving them in made it less perfect, but more balanced or more interesting, or more something. This was an amazing day in NYC, with perfect spring weather and a long birthday walk from downtown up to Central Park.

Today I'm taking part in Weekend Reflections by James.

Man and Nature

New York ~ May 6, 2009

Primordial glacially-scoured bedrock coexists in harmony with the designing hand of humans in and around Central Park. This, I think, is part of the fascination.

Deco is Everywhere

New York ~ May 8, 2009

One of the many fun things about being in New York City after having not visited for so many years (decades) was finding delightful Art Deco designs everywhere I looked. I'm sure that when I was there in 1969 (?) I didn't even know what Deco was.

An Ancient Design on the Floor?

Mosaic, Probably Roman New York ~ May 7, 2009

I believe this was in the Roman section. Since it's on the floor for everyone to walk on, I think it must be a reproduction or a design meant to recall the period.

City of New York

Manhole Cover, NYC New York ~ May 6, 2009

This manhole cover was made in India. There were some interesting comments when I posted another metal cover in Astoria, Oregon, that was also made in India. Especially check out the comment by Kcalpesh on that post. I thought maple leaves were the symbol of Canada, so maybe this is a secret passageway to our neighbor to the north.

Everyone's MoMA

Museum of Modern Art, New York New York ~ May 6, 2009
MoMA (Museum of Modern Art)

I think everyone takes this photo, and here is my contribution. It was an incredibly beautiful day - perfect temperature, a lovely walk. It was also my birthday, which made the walk with my honey and the visit extra special.

Egyptian Ducks

New York ~ May 7, 2009
Metropolitan Museum of Art

I love the ancient Egyptian portrayal of animals. What I read somewhere is that because the Egyptians didn't have the rigid restrictions for portraying animals that they did for portraying humans, the animals are depicted more realistically, relying on the artist's perceptions rather than on the learned conventions for human forms. For this reason, they have a particular charm and realism. I love what the dim lighting did for this photo.

I remember how enticing this place looked as we took our long walk up to MoMa and Central Park.
