Grave Infestation - Carnage Gathers (2025)

Carnage Gathers (a joint release by Invictus Productions and Dark Descent Records) is the second album Canadian Grave Infestation and will be a feast for anyone into old school death metal. Think a mix of old shool US DM, bits from early Slayer (circa Hell Awaits / Reign in Blood), and a touch of war metal for the additional chaos and aggression. Good stuff!

Tribulation - Formulas of death (2013)

Formulas of death is the sophomore album by Tribulation (from Sweden). They are back with an excellent and ambitious album, more epic and progressive than their first one (this time it's released by Invictus productions). What they play is a smart mix of many old school metal styles. The vocals and some guitar and drumming parts are black metal (reminding the latest Immortal), you also have a NWOBHM meets thrash or punk elements that reminds me of the first Slayer records, or Entombed. And the progressive rock / black metal blending could relate them to Enslaved as well. It's quite fashionable nowadays to blend elements from different styles but few bands manages to do it as well as Tribulation does on Formulas of death. And I suppose that's why it ended on many "best record of the year list" for 2013 (including one of mine, see HERE). The other reason being that it is a really cool and enjoyable listen able to make headbang / air guitar any metalhead.

Malthusian - MMXIII (demo 2013)

Malthusian is a new death metal band from Ireland. their first release is called demo MMXIII but is released by Invictus productions and with good produciton value so we could say it's more like an EP (three song but around 23 min of music) than a demo (and its members are experienced, some have been in Altar of plagues and Mourning beloveth among others). it's a really solid and interesting release, a start already on a high note. it's rooted in old school death metal, with some elements reminding a bit Morbid angel in it's massive epicness and weird melodies. but it develops also more modern elements in its songwriting, evoking sometimes the darkest doom metal and even more some recent death metal bands like Mitochondrion or Portal, basing more its effects in the building of suffocating and ominous atmospheres than on brute force. we could say they choose with taste their recipes and cook it with all the needed savoir-faire to get their own tasty blend of death metal. if you're into death metal this release really deserves your attention.
