Oltretomba - L'Ouverture des fosses (2018)

This one's definitely scary enough for the Halloween night. Oltretomba is a funeral doom band from Marseille (France) and on their new album L'Ouverture des fosses (with the really good Caligari records) they excell at crafting horrific and mystical atmospheres, and they're doing it in an unusual way, not exactly avant-garde but different and weird, and in a good way. Really strong and interesting stuff.

Horse Latitude - Primal Gnosis (2016)

Horse Latitude is a finnish trio, with drums, and two guitarists, one playing bass guitar, and the other ...bass guitar as well! that gives the band its very primitive and raw sound, adding a nice twist to their funeral / drone doom. There's also some noise elements, and Moog parts to bring a bit of melody and an extra dose of weirdness to the atmosphere. Yes atmosphere, this is all about atmosphere, evoking some very old forests, the realm of ancient beasts or some terrific rituals at night. On their new album Primal Gnosis, their fourth one,  the songs are less memorable their on their previous one ( Black soil, a true masterpiece. You can read the review & interview I did then HERE), but anyway this one is even more about raw atmospheres, with longer and even more minimalistic songs, with good noisy and more metallic and savage peaks. Another good album from a very special and interesting band.

Coffinworm - IV.I.VIII (2014)

Coffinworm, from Indianapolis, did a good start with Great bringer of night / When all become none but they are doing better with this second album called IV.I.VIII (released by the excellet Profound lore records). some say they are are "blackened doom" but it could also be described as old school death metal with a slow pace even bordering funeral doom at times. anyway it's slow, dark and filthy. this new album is a bit less raw but more subtle than what they did before. and that way they are better at capturing your attention and building an hypnotic atmosphere with all the insidious grooves (helped by some excellent and very personnal drumming) and creepy melodies that fills the songs.
insidious and creepy, that's it! a very strong album!

Stomach earth - Stomach earth (2013)

Stomach earth, the solo band of Mike McKenzie, offers with its first (self titled) album some very abrasive and heavy funeral death / doom. death metal style vocals, very slow songs, very thick and harsh guitar sound. mournfull and hatefull desolation all the way. just some funeral doom or old school death style melodies subtely placed in the songs. I really like it's radical sound. one of most memorable and best funeral-death/doom album released in 2013. if you like it slow, heavy, and raw I recommend it.
