Tinkering with.... T34 ARV

Something for the weekend....

This is another Frankenstein build. I had a spare warlord T34 hull, without tracks ( will explain why  in a later post!) and as I’m not a fan, was going to spare box it!

Anyways, have always hankered to do  an improvised recovery version, an expediency deployed when the tide starting turning for the Russians.  Various configurations, with no standard build  these were old hulls with the turret ring enclosed and either makeshift or repurposed access hatches added. I had a Rubicon kit sitting ready for the build when it occurred to me I could actually make use of the Warlord hull.

The Warlord hull, for me, is generally poor, cast on towing cables, incorrect rear hatch and engine cover and poor handle representations, adding up to more trouble than its worth, just buy the Rubicon   Kits!  However the arv version would enable me to obscure some of these shortcomings...

The hull, as usual, was relieved of most of the poor details.  The track set is Rubicon, with wheel sets swapped out to represent an ad hoc salvage vehicle. Various bits and bobs from the spares were added, and woodwork etched out. The drivers hatch detailing was removed and a new recess cut out and spare box hatch added. The hull, as now standard for me, is weighted with polyfilla to add some “heft”. The grey surfacing is modelling putty used to simulate the rough rolled plate. Some panel lines have been scribes but a few to add, along with fuel points etc. This is about 50% complete, will add tarps, tie downs, handles, crew, armour welds and obviously towing points and cables.....

Am on a bit of a Russian theme at the moment; with loads of new ( and expensive) reference material I now have no excuse for incorrect detailing, in fact just off to remove some late ‘42 wheels from an early ‘42 T-34 (earmarked for tyre tread camo scheme)

Thought I’d post up now, as no more modelling/painting this weekend

Old School Transport

This one has been around a while, no major mods by me, bar adding the reigns. Had a disaster with the picture session, but you'll get the idea!

Neil, all boxed, will post early next week.

Morris C8 2 pdr Portee

Its seems interest in the North African campaign has been reinvigorated recently ( I expect largely due to the Perry's) so this paint for Company B is quite topical.

It is a Morris 2 pdr Portee as used by Armoured Divisions in North Africa. I originally wanted to do a snazzy Caunter scheme in line with the recent Perry Universal Carrier build, but there wasn't the evidence supporting this as a legitimate scheme for them. This meant a rather plane faded yellow scheme, however I didn't wanted a British "Dunkelgelb" so decided to go for heavy wear and tear and fading.

I'm really happy with the result on this interestingly little vehicle.

As always more pictures on my flickr

I have a flurry of finished, and finishing, projects over the next couple of weeks which I will post here as I have time, please subscribe to email updates if you'd like to keep pace with the eye candy.

Tinkering with.... Warlords sdkfz 7/1

Been waiting on this one for a while, and now finally got my hands on one as a commission.
This is basically a straight build with up detailing, nothing fancy really so areas of note are:

1) realignment of front drive spocket, slightly raised rather than in line with road wheels
2) addition of crew weapon racks on the mudguards.
3) up detailing of cab, map, handbrake, gear levers, binos etc
4) addition of ammunition boxes
5) foil zeltbhan
6) rear foot rests/ stirrups
7) width indicators on mudguards
8) spent shell cases

I have an Army Group North (AGN) ammunition trailer which I will most likely add ( now added!)

T34/85 & 76 Section

Last in the Russian batch for a while ( although two IS 2's planned down the line). These are the best (IMO) T34's available, 1/56 from Jeff at JTFM ( no bases hurrah!). I bought additional turrets so in fact there are only three hulls and six turrets. Crew figures are BAM/Warlord which fit nicely in the turret cupolas. Two of these are up for Sale.

As always, click for full size pictures or for more detailed pics and general eye candy peruse my gallery, link to the right  >>>>>

SAS Jeeps North West Europe

A side project for me, two conversions on the Bolt Action Airborne Jeep models into their SAS counterparts, as used in North West Europe. Perfect for those rearguard harassing actions and small scale skirmishes.

Modifications included the additional fuel tank(s) in the back, front and rear armoured plates, multiple K-guns mounts and bespoke stowage, even an "acquired" Luger in the back of one. The K guns are a mixture of spares box Company B on one model, and extra ones supplied by Paul at Warlord. I think the bren was a metal BAM one, but you can now get the plastic weapons sprues separately so I'd start there next time. The red/fluorescent patch on the command jeep is to assist recognition for air dropped supplies.

I've had my fun with them so they need new homes now, poa,

1/56th Beasts!

Whilst not the biggest vehicles painted to date (that accolade goes to the BEF Minis Char 2D) these two resin kits from JTFM are beauties. Minor mods on the track plates, but essentailly as they come. Hopefully Jeff will have some zimmeritted versions out soon for their earlier deployments.

Bolt Action Sdkfz 222

A re-release from Warlord Games, this time without the base. I much prefer this no base approach and look forward to some more old favorites becoming so unencumbered! The 222 is a lovely little kit, here made with no mods at all, grenade screens modelled shut as requested. I do note however the Herr Grabner figure fits just nicely in the turret if you open them up, maybe a little project for the future.
