Justice League of America Book Cover

F.O.A.M.er Jim Bal sent in pics of this super-cool foam book sleeve, featuring George Perez's superb cover to Justice League of America #217 as its front! Jim says his daughters have been using it every year since they bought it. This issue was during the brief period after Batman left the team to form the Outsiders, but before JLA Detroit. If you haven't read these issues of the series, I suggest you pick them up, they're all quite good.

I remember when this book sleeve came out, and I thought I had posted about it on the Shrine at the time, but it somehow fell through the cracks. Thanks Jim!

Justice League of America #192 Around The World

At top is the classic cover to Justice League of America #192 by George Perez. Below are two international versions, featuring Batman and, improbably, Red Tornado as the marquee character.

If that's not odd enough, check out Aquaman on the Red Tornado cover--it looks as though someone didn't really understand what they were looking at, and added a whole section of anatomy that should not be there! To make matters worse, the orange doesn't match, meaning this particular Sea King is rocking a two-tone tunic. Great Neptune!

Splash Page Saturday: Justice League of America #192

After two pages of what seems like mundane JLA activity (the members talking about by-laws!), this story explodes with this killer (*ahem*) splash page by George Perez and John Beatty, featuring Red Tornado seemingly turning on his JLA pals. A great way to kick the story into high gear.

Who's Who Original Art by George Perez

A few weeks ago my Fire and Water Podcast co-host The Irredeemable Shag found this diamond for sale on eBay--George Perez's original art to the cover of Who's Who #1!

The asking price was a cool 5K, but as far as I can tell from the auction, there were no takers. I wonder if they'd be willing to take my bid of (checks Shazam! Arby's drinking glass where I keep my spare change) $21.49?

Aquaman Art Gallery: George Perez

Really can't beat Aquaman by George Perez; too bad we haven't really gotten that much of it, relatively. This commission piece of Arthur squaring off against Black Manta is amazing.

If I Ran DC Comics (Part Eleventy-Billion): I would create a JLA spin-off book featuring nothing but one-and-done stories, drawn by different top-flight artists: Perez, Ordway, Garcia-Lopez (PBHN), etc. Two-parts, max.

Splash Page Saturday: Justice League of America #193

As an Aquaman fan growing up, I couldn't have asked for a more exciting splash page than this one from Justice League of America #193, which was Part Two of the "Tornado Tyrant" storyline!

The previous issue ended with Red Tornado in the clutches of his creator, T.O. Morrow, and the JLA had fanned out to try and find him. It's Aquaman who does, and here he is, sneaking onto the deck outside Morrow's house, ready to take action.

Aquaman rarely gets to be dark or spooky--his fanciful setting and bright colors just don't lend themselves to the Sea King coming across like Batman, but here George Perez and inker John Beatty really pull it off: Aquaman looks kinda creepy and menacing, and I remember loving this page as a kid. Still do.
