The microblogging social network Bluesky was updated today with some new features aimed at improving the experience of using the platform. With the update, users can now upload longer videos – but that’s not all. Read on as we detail what’s new on Bluesky.
What’s new in Bluesky: longer videos and more
As detailed by Bluesky in a post, version 1.99 of the platform brings some welcome and long-awaited changes. One of the most notable is certainly the ability to upload longer videos. More specifically, you can now upload a video of up to three minutes on Bluesky. Previously, the platform limited videos to 60 seconds.
Another welcome improvement is related to DMs. Users will now have a separate DM inbox to approve requests from unknown users. This makes it easier to filter messages from people you know. And when you don’t want to reply to a DM from an unknown account, you can simply reject the conversation. Bluesky believes that this will help reduce DM spam.
The platform has also made it easier to mute accounts from a post and to report posts and accounts to moderation. Moreover, the web layout of the platform has been improved for tablets.
In December 2024, Bluesky began rolling out its own Trending Topics feature, so that users can see what everyone is talking about. For now, the trending topics are global and do not differ by region, and they’re only available to those using Bluesky in English. The platform promises that support for more languages will be added in the future.
Currently, Bluesky has more than 32 million active users. Although Threads (owned by Meta) has more users, Bluesky has been gaining traction in recent months.
The Bluesky app is available for free on the App Store, and it requires an iPhone running iOS 15.1 or later. Make sure you have the latest version of the app installed so you can access all the new features.
