FULL MEAT JACKET

There's another (relatively well known) release titled My War but goddamn that shit if that shit doesn't escape me because it doesn't sound nearly as fucked up as this shit. FULL MEAT JACKET come off like a real and desperate internal struggle manifested as improvisational noise punk. If mental anguish had a sound, it would be FULL MEAT JACKET. If emotional frustration was a band, it might be FULL MEAT JACKET. If punk lost all pretense....it might sound like My War in 2004 (say it out loud to get the rhyme).

The label boss says it better than I can, naturally.

KASHAIOF

Deliberate and cerebral industrial tinged dark electronic mania. Their sound seems to fill unknown voids; existing in darkness and shadows - existing, as in "A Sofa," awkwardly and with no real definition of (or?) purpose. But the duo exists, and 2020's Home is a master class in presence. This is the experimental goth I needed when I was a teenager...better late than never.

HEDGEFUND

A dozen years after HEDGEFUND initially appeared on these pages comes their post script. I posted their self-titled debut in 2012 and Apreiron was snail mailed to me with the companion OHR // P.A.Y. shortly thereafter. I sat on both of them for the average lifespan of a trash panda before I unleashed the former on you a few years ago but still I waited for this one.....just because. "OHR" is a brutal sonic exercise, painful noise and deliberately manipulated sound while "P.A.Y." is an even rawer version of the band who hurt us with their two previous releases - howling, desperate. You're going to recognize the sounds here....but you'll never hear them the same again after you listen to them like this. This band was relatively short lived and I fear the waves they made were rather small, but damn this shit was good.

TIME ADDICT

Free form improvisational misanthropy, presented as experimental free jazz noise shit.
And some days all I ever want is cacophony.
TIME ADDICT delivers (again).

PSYWARFARE // BBVGC

Not to be confused with the recent P.S.Y.W.A.R. post, this is Dwid's PSYWARFARE sharing destruction duties with Japan's BBVGC. The latter takes the BLOODY MINDED hardcore-as-noise-as-hardcore approach and makes it spooky and theatrical while the former....well, I can't speak on the world of Dwid but I recognize that it's a world. And I respect that he has been doing the shit for three decades (plus). And "Evisceration" is a perfect mind-melt of erratic power electronics, harsh noise and deliberate constructions of desperate sound. If you're looking for something to fukk up your day, then look no further.

KILT

I was having a conversation with my mother yesterday, discussing the nuances of stench core versus crasher crust and the minute but distinct differences between the Japanese and Swedish interpretations of DBeat. Most of these fascinating details were unfortunately lost on her (though she does acknowledge the differences between THE LETTERMEN and CHUCK BERRY). At one point, I inserted noise into our conversation - there's harsh noise wall and power electronics and ambient and drone and countless more subgenres, and I brought this up to demonstrate that the more you know about a subject, the more there is to learn about the same subject. Came home that night and Nathan texted me a reminder that CRUDITY totally rips (see: Swedish interpretations of DBeat) and then I listened to 2010's Culos Asados and tried to make sense of my day.

KJELD DOKNER

I'd like to tell myself that I have words that meet the moment, but really I have nothing. Still and again I have nothing at all. We are just so fukkn bad - collectively we, like Thee Royal We, we are just so bad. It doesn't mean The Other is good (far from it) but our pomp is just so transparently false. As if The Emperor didn't even bother to pretend getting dressed before he announced that he was wearing clothes. It's a farce. WE are a farce. It's a false narrative and it's complete bullshit and this timeline is terrifying. To anyone reading this who ever thought we were better than any of the people they told us were bad - we aren't any better. We are the same. It's just a different narrative. Can you imagine what could happen if all of the "others" got on the same page? But alas, this is what they want. THIS is what they want. Fuck this. FUCKAMERICANS.

MAX NORDILE

God/s this is beautiful. You've heard me talk about Max and his compulsions on these pages over the years, and these comments are no different.......it's that this one hits just right as I type these words. Free jazz mixed with boundary-free experimentation and ambient bliss. (Pharoah) Sanders, (Shane) Embury and (Genesis) P'Orridge embodied in sonic freak skin. There's really nothing like Sir Nordile in the current realm.

COLIN LANGENUS

One Side: A multi-instrumental freak out captured live in 2007.
Another Side: A collection of improvisations collected by Colin Langenus between 2005 and 2008 and manipulated to create.....this.

BONEMAGIC

Been wondering what do do with this and what to say about this for (quite) a (long) time, and even though I'm not sure if today is the right day to talk about BONEMAGIC.....here we are. Classic, brilliant '80s industrial worship of the highest order - CLOCK DVA, NITZER EBB and mid-decade Wax Trax! punctuated with complicated dirges like "Unified Violence" and dark ambient missives like "Welcome To Sinew" or the vaguely SKINNY PUPPY-esque "Tales Of Hate & Separation." There is a lot more BONEMAGIC where this came from - more than a dozen releases under this moniker alone (there are other monikers) - but Meat Concrete is a gloriously dark place to start.

KAKERLAK

Twenty minutes of brutal and disorienting harsh noise wall punctuated by a few subtle respites. Actually....there are no respites.
This shit is just sonic brutality.
Kinda like an ocean crashing into your face.
I could say so many more things, but....just listen.
Loudly.

THIRST, HUNGRY, SEX & SAFETY

Yes...Play at High Volume.

EATING

I do not know how to (best) describe EATING, because EATING defies description. Sure, it's avant-improvisational jazz/punk......if you want. But it's something else even though it's also not. All of the sounds are here, punks - the foundation of everything that you do is here in one form and/or another. So listen and learn and fucking create everything that you are compelled to create, because that is exactly what makes the Music For People punks very very special punks.

BANGUN DARI MIMPI BURUK YANG INDAH

More like this please? Thank you. A breathtaking collection of raw fastcore, mince/grind, noise, shit-fi and punk, all delivered with a brilliantly honest lack of fidelity. DESTRUCT, PROJECT BABI NO.9, DEVIATED SYMPHONY, DIRTY MOUTH, NOISE FOR VIOLENCE and more, all hailing from Yogyjakarta. Shit just feels real, and the next 42 minutes of your life are about to get a lot more brutal.

LOOSE BLOODY STOOL

The genius of LOOSE BLOODY STOOL is that you're going to spend the next fifteen minutes thinking they're going to do something. And they do, but they never....they never finish. The White Tape is all a set-up. Yearning noise and subtly chaotic improvisations that build with no crescendo, each movement just....ends. Rarely do I finish a session so desperately wanting more of whatever I just had. And rarely yo I wish for a longer loose bloody stool.

SPETSNAZ // FLEXIBLE AMMUNITION BELT

• Two doses of ramshackle noise punk annihilation from SPETSNAZ.
• Three minutes of raw anarcho/noise from FLEXIBLE AMMUNITION BELT.

• Enjoy your week...

WIRE

• I first heard WIRE around the time of the mid-era Ahead and I was super into it. I didn't know anything about their origins and/or influence, just as I couldn't begin to comprehend their context or influence - it was just a really cool and danceable new wave record that sounded somehow....different.
• I saw WIRE only once, roughly thirty years after A Bell Is A Cup...Until It Is Struck was released. They played at Slim's in SF and I was pleasantly floored at how much they did not give a fukk at all about their hits or the songs that most attendees likely wanted to hear. I think they mostly played stuff from Nocturnal Koreans and Send but I can't really be sure, I just know that people were filing out and I was enthralled.
• I am low-key obsessed with solo Bruce Gilbert material, particularly Insiding and The Shivering Man, this information is interesting perhaps only to me and does not in any way relate to Document And Eye Witness by WIRE. I also was a big fan of HE SAID when Hail was released. I still am.
• These recordings are incredible, capturing the band at the very onset of not giving a fukk. I read somewhere that this Rough Trade release represented the end of "the first era" of WIRE but I almost feel like this was WIRE intentionally killing external perceptions of that era. Listen to what they did to 12XU and think about a band wanting to defy and destroy convention in real time. This wasn't "art punk," this was "punk" in its purest form. Sound without rules.
• This 1981 release compiles songs performed and recorded in 1979 and 1980. Songs performed and recorded by a band who were clearly exhausted by punk conventions just a few years after punk's inception. I think all rational and reasonable listeners of punk are grateful for their disdain and /or disillusion because how fukkn boring would it be if we just listened to DAMNED and UK SUBS all the time, you know?
• DAMNED and UK SUBS are both great bands....WIRE is, was and will always be more interesting than either.

WEIRD WOMAN

Two fifteen minute messages that may or may not have originated from the brain of a toddler. I'm going to assume they had some parental assistance while I hope that they did not. The tape is deliberate, slow, vaguely terrifying. Listen to "You Will Not Sleep Again" while you sleep tonight.

Worth noting that WEIRD WOMAN lands right next to WEIRD UNKNOWN GUY alphabetically and I strongly suggest you (re)visit that post from 2018.

MISTLETOE

A haunting sonic display in four movements - horror and desperation transformed into sound. That Perchta is so calculated, so utterly deliberate, makes the sound even more terrifying. This didn't just happen...this was intentional.

BOTCHED FACELIFT // MATURBATORY DYSFUNCTION

Three tracks each from California's BOTCHED FACELIFT and Washington's MASTURBATORY DYSFUNCTION. The former lurches through disjointed noise that refuses to settle into any kind of groove, punctuated by vocal outbursts and descending rumbles. The latter present an ominous interpretation of the harsh noise wall, opening with the aptly titled "March To The Graveside." Their sound is akin to large scale wreckage at sea - desperate creaks distorted to oblivion by the nature that consumes them, all set to the background of a deathly beauty. Appropriate.

WEAVING STONES

Gloriously haunting lo-fi drones captured in the PNW. Two movements of mesmerizing pulses recorded in 2023 backed by a live conjuring from 2024 that focuses on mangled low end guitar feedback. There might not be much to say, but there are layers upon layers of sound waiting for your ears.
