DENIM CASKET

Punk is meant to be weird. Punk is, by definition, queer and/or outside whatever version of 'normal' exists in a given time, This tape is both of those and all of those - I dare say I have never heard a thing like Denim Casket before I heard DENIM CASKET...and that's what makes the shit so important. Drum and bass dystopian hardcore with gratuitous early PV influences.....but the shit is from Idaho and that just means.....it means the shit is just different. Listen to "Permanent Marker" and then try to tell me that you 'know what this is' or that you hear 'what they're doing.' Because you don't and also...you just don't.  Anyone ever told you they thought about NEGATIVLAND and GODFLESH and CROSSED OUT while listening to one tape? Well, that's what is happening now. A weird, plodding, awkward sonic excursion awaits you.

HAGGIS

In the summer of 1994, my band MULTIPLE CHOICE embarked on a ridiculous nine week North American tour during which we lost all of our money and most of our dignity....and during which we made friends that I still cherish today. One of the last shows of that tour was in San Jose with ALL YOU CAN EAT (who were at that point, at least to newcomers like us, already stalwarts of the Bay Area Scene - they had toured overseas and members worked for Maximum Rocknroll for fukks sake!) and Boise, Idaho band HAGGIS (who had something cool written on the side of their van, even though I can't remember what it was). It was classic early DIY touring - the dude who "set up the show" showed up late and all the bands just hung out on the sidewalk with some local punks in front of the venue in downtown San Jose until he got there...and we told him the venue was locked. Turns out he hadn't exactly asked anyone if he could do the show there, he was just kinda hoping they would be open or some shit, so we convinced him (or guilt tripped him) to find a house where we could have the show. Wait....did I say house? I meant apartment - like in an apartment complex. So even though it seemed we were gonna play mostly for each other (you want to romanticize touring, young punks? because playing for the other bands at the show because no one knows who you are and no one bothered to stop watching tv to come see you play....? that's what touring is really about) but we double parked and were all working like a team to load shit in to this apartment and set up in the living room. And then a cop drove by as we were pulling the bass cabinet out of the van and he stopped and he looked at us as if to say "what the actual fukk do you think you are doing?" and we all kinda assessed the situation and thought "yeah, this shit ain't never gonna fly" and so we loaded the gear back in the van/s. So yeah...that's how I met HAGGIS, and that's how I became friends with ALL YOU CAN EAT.

But if you want to listen to this 1996 demo, and you should, then you are in for a fukkn treat. I mean, if you like melodic 1990s punk. But the good kind....not the mindless generic bullshit. Guitars that bridge a gap between Flip Your Wig and early '90s Bay Area (note: original HAGGIS guitarist was ex-SEPTIC DEATH...according to The Internet), and the kind of gravel drenched vocals that make the era so easy to apologize for. I asked Karoline for comparisons and she mentioned CRIMPSHRINE and SCHLONG and JAWBREAKER and Hayes-era Lookout! and I don't disagree with her at all even though I have completely different reference points (like: DEAD MILKMEN playing high energy pop punk through 1985 HÜSKER DÜ's gear without changing the settings). The main thing though, is that SL9 holds up extremely well in the face of an overly judgmental and/or compartmentalized internet. These songs are absolute burners - and if you can sing along and there's a story to go with them....? Well then that's even better.

HUMMINGBIRD OF DEATH

Yeah, this has been happening for well over a decade now. While they haven't slowed down, Idaho's fastest export were clearly on a mission dating from the first demo in 2005. What kind of mission? Sixteen tracks in seven and one half minutes. That kind of mission. A constant blur of fastcore riffs and relentless blast beats, the kind of magic your average 45 year old ripper doesn't come across too often these days...look, I know the shit still rips and I know there are new rippers ripping the shit all the time, I'm just saying they new rippers don't enter my Rip-O-Vision all that often these days. I like to rip. And I like disjointed start/stop riffs with drums so fast it makes you head hurt. That's what this thing is. From a fast music fan perspective, HUMMINGBIRD OF DEATH are motherfukkn fast. Closing the demo with covers (INFEST, DRI, GBN, NO COMMENT) was a nice touch as well. Highest recommendation.

MEMORY SMOKER

One more hour of trance inducing synth drone from Boise, Idaho's MEMORY SMOKER. At some moments terrifying, and at others indescribably peaceful. I enjoy this outfit, and recommend them.

DEEP CREEPS

Crushing mutant hardcore from Boise. A half hour of downtuned discordant devastation that nods at '90s powerviolence without ignoring the nuances that have come since. While touches of KARP (by way of grunge) and basement emo guitar work keep DEEP CREEPS firmly rooted in the past, this demo is more modern and aurally topical than any by-the-numbers hardcore act cranking out the rehashed flavor of the month - this shit is weird. Intent(ional) listening is not required, but the full effect cannot be realized without it.

MUTANT VIDEO // MEMORY SMOKER

MUTANT VIDEO should be no stranger to Friends Of The Escape, and their latest effort is arguably even more...trying. The sound is uncomfortable, sparse and dark - and that is the point. This tape is shared with MEMORY SMOKER, fellow Escape veterans and (hopefully) familiar to fans of the weird, whose latest contribution is decidedly more subdued than their last - which somehow just makes it that much more difficult. I'm not sure if these are sounds or experiences, but I want to keep deciding over and over...preferably in the dark.

=====================================
For all in the Bay Area, might I suggest that you attend the art and sound program presented tonight  by FEEDING. Of course today's post is in honor of this showing (one third of MUTANT VIDEO is also one half of FEEDING), and I have also breathed new life into two of the older PIG HEART TRANSPLANT posts in honor of the presentation (the Brain of PHT is the other half of FEEDING). EconoJam Records in Oakland. Attendance is highly recommended.

MEMORY SMOKER

For the next hour, if you are brave, then you will be rewarded. Remain calm, pay attention, breathe deeply and listen closely. This is the marriage of noise and psychedelia, and it is a wondrous union.

CHILDREN WITH EYES THAT HATE YOU // WHAT WE'VE DONE IS SECRET

- two tapes, two region specific compilations -

Children With Eyes That Hate You is more than a brilliant title, it is fifty minutes of unknown and under appreciated crust/punk/hardcore from Michigan. I think this tape came out in the early '00s, but a lot of the things that I think turn out to be wrong (just ask anyone who actually listens to me). Tracks from REPRISAL, VILENTLY ILL, HARDWARE HEALTH and loads more. This will be of special interest to those who like it raw, 19 bands in all.

I don't want to toot my own horn too much, but I've played shows in a lot of places. Some of them have been really cool and some have kinda sucked (though I place the blame for the latter more at my own feet than anything else). One place that sucked? Boise, Idaho. Only played there once (I think? Maybe twice, but it was certainly never good), and have never seen any reason to return....until now. By no means is everything on this tape to my liking, but most importantly none of it sucks. Even if TIM BLOOD AND THE GUTPANTHERS ain't my jam, at least they are solid as fuck, and there is more than enough magic on this tape to make me curious about the potential for good times in Boise: LITTLE MISS AND THE NO NAMES, killer old school USHC from SOCIAL ANTIDOTE, snotty punk from TOILET BABIES, raw hardcore from PIG NOOSE, even rawer hardcore from the unfortunately named CAT MASSACRE, amazing guitar driven madness from VIPE...the title speaks volumes here, because every single one of these bands is new to me. A secret perhaps, but one that is well worth spreading around.
