An unofficial ARK server is hosted by a player or community, independently of Studio Wildcard. It lets the host set custom rules: XP, taming and harvest rates, mods, PvP or PvE. Directories such as Top-Games list these private servers to help you discover and compare them.
In ARK, open Join ARK, select the Unofficial tab, then filter by map, mode or name. Pick a server and click to connect. You can also save its IP address as a Steam favorite, or use direct connect (open IP:port) from the in-game console.
In PvP, players can attack each other, destroy bases and steal tamed creatures. In PvE, player-versus-player combat is disabled, so you cooperate against the environment and dinosaurs. PvX is a hybrid mode, often with dedicated zones or scheduled PvP windows to limit raiding.
No, Studio Wildcard shut down the official ARK Survival Evolved servers in late September 2023, when ARK Survival Ascended launched. Only unofficial and private servers remain playable, and some of them even host the old official save data. To play on official servers, you now need to switch to ARK Survival Ascended.
Rates set how fast you progress: XP gain, taming, harvesting and egg hatching. A boosted server speeds these values up. Mods are extensions that add maps, creatures, items or features. Together, rates and mods define the pace and the content of your ARK playthrough.
