Reef also means the tied off part of a sail, like when you'd tie it up during a storm, as well as a mineral deposit apparently (TIL). So, look forward to space storms shutting down the ship propulsion?

It could also be a non-literal "iron reef" in reference to a metalic structure becoming a haven for some space critters, so like coming across crashed ships or a ruined civilisation with primarily metal structures that is home to a lifeform that uses them for a protective home like some fish do. Obviously not iron, but we always use "iron" or "steel" for things that are just tough. Iron Legion in GW2 for example, but they make their weapons and vehicles out of steel, orichalcum, and more.
