Think very carefully before choosing Prodigy Finance
I chose Prodigy for my first year because the co-signer option made the loan attractive. Unfortunately, the experience from the very beginning has been frustrating: slow email responses, almost impossible phone support, and communication that often feels like going back and forth with a chatbot.
The bigger concern is what happens in year two. My interest rate has increased by more than 20% even though my risk profile has improved. The co-signer option that made the product attractive in year one was removed for my second year, even though Prodigy still offers co-signer-based loans to new first-year applicants. I was also charged the $500 application fee again, despite being told by a Prodigy salesperson a year ago that this would only be charged once.
None of this includes the fact that these are variable-rate loans, which is a risk I understood and accepted. My concern is everything *around* the variable rate: changes to the fixed costs, removal of features, additional fees, and poor communication.
The operational experience has been equally poor. My first-year loan was significantly delayed, which created a lot of financial stress during my first couple of months in the US. I am now facing delays again with my second-year loan.
Even something as basic as setting up the required $100 auto-debit has become a problem. Because I have an existing first-year loan, the website does not clearly distinguish between the two loans. The system defaults to an amount above $1,000 instead of the $100 required under my agreement, and even the technical support team has been unable to resolve it. Instead, the burden keeps being pushed back onto the customer.
There is also surprisingly little transparency for a financial product of this size. I cannot easily access a conventional loan statement or amortization schedule, and important information is spread across different parts of the platform. The website and app do very little to make things clearer.
All of this is on top of the **4% administration fee**.
My biggest takeaway for prospective borrowers: **do not evaluate Prodigy solely based on what they offer you in year one.** What looks attractive initially can change substantially by year two—fees, co-signer availability, processes, and customer experience.
I understand that lending comes with variable interest rates and associated risks. What I did not expect was this level of opacity, inconsistent communication, additional charges, and deterioration in the customer experience.
If you have other financing options available, I would strongly recommend comparing them carefully before committing to Prodigy.
