Transcultural and interreligious skills are becoming increasingly important in all areas of society. Teachers, in particular, face the dual challenge of acting with sensitivity and nuance within culturally and religiously diverse learning groups, whilst at the same time guiding pupils towards transcultural and interreligious learning. The interdisciplinary working group ‘Transcultural Interreligious Studies’, formed in 2018, has set itself the aim of responding to this current societal need and developing a programme of study for students from all disciplines that enables graduates to act as mediators between religious and cultural traditions.

The ‘Transcultural Interreligious Studies’ programme, which will be offered from the 2020/21 winter semester onwards, begins at Bachelor’s level and can optionally be continued at Master’s level, fulfils this aim. It draws on tried-and-tested elements of ‘Intercultural Jewish Studies’, allows students to specialise in the areas of ‘Jewish Studies’, ‘Islamic Studies’, ‘Christian Studies’ and ‘Interreligious Education’, whilst also offering a perspective on transcultural and interreligious interconnections.
