Hybrid
Hybrid (ハイブリッド体 Haiburiddo-tai) is an artificial Evolution Stage comprised of Digimon who have been created using the Legendary Spirits of the Warrior Ten.
Overview[edit]
Origin[edit]
In the aftermath of their battle against Lucemon[1] in ancient times, the Warrior Ten left behind the Legendary Spirits in various places around the world, intending them to be used in case of some future crisis.[2] When humans were summoned to the Digital World to use the Spirits, the result was a new species: Hybrid Digimon.[3]
A connection has also been drawn between the origin of Hybrids and the creation of Dukemon: Crimson Mode, believed to have been made possible when the Spirit of a human Tamer mediated the resonance between Dukemon and ZERO-ARMS: Grani.[4]
Properties[edit]
Hybrid Digimon are the result of humans fusing with the Legendary Spirits to become Digimon who have been granted the power of the Warrior Ten by the Spirits.[5] They have been characterized as being born when the digital data-based Digimon are "transformative multiplied" by the innate potential of analog humans, and as having unknown power.[3] However, despite the strong association between Hybrids and humans, use of the Spirits is not exclusive to humans, as Digimon are capable of doing so as well.[5]
Each Hybrid Digimon has power over one of ten elemental powers—Fire, Light, Darkness, Thunder, Wind, Ice, Earth, Wood, Water, and Steel—derived from the Spirit(s) used to create it.
Hybrid Digimon generally have the Variable Attribute, which changes their Attribute in response to the environment.[5]
The power level of Hybrid Digimon varies, depending on the type and quantity of spirits that are used to create them, and can fall anywhere between Child-class to Ultimate-class power. Hybrid Digimon are all of the Variable attribute, meaning that their attribute changes in accordance with their current circumstances.[5]
Although it is also created using Spirits, Susanoomon has never been classified as a Hybrid, and is instead a conventional Ultimate Digimon.
Forms[edit]
Hybrids are divided into five categories, called Forms 「形態 Keitai」, based on the type and quantity of Spirits that are used to create them.
| Name | Description | Example | First Appearance |
|---|---|---|---|
| (unnamed) | A half-human, half-beast Hybrid Digimon that is the result of a Human Form Hybrid Digimon losing its power. Despite the power reduction, Adult-class Digimon are still not a match for it.[6][7] Evolution Stage equivalent: Child |
Strabimon |
D-Scanner 1.0 |
| Human Form 「人型形態」 (Dub: Human Hybrid) |
A Hybrid Digimon created using one Human Spirit. It excels in agility and stability, but the human side's strengths and weaknesses exert a significant influence.[3] Evolution Stage equivalent: Varies, usually Adult |
Wolfmon |
Digital Monster Card Game: Booster 14: "The Radiant Crimson Knight of Heavenly Wings" |
| Beast Form 「獣型形態」 (Dub: Beast Hybrid) |
A Hybrid Digimon created using one Beast Spirit. Its more animalistic nature has been unleashed, and while it boasts power that surpasses Ultimate Digimon, it struggles to control its savage impulses and is prone to running wild.[3] Evolution Stage equivalent: Varies, usually Adult to Perfect |
Garummon |
Digital Monster Card Game: Booster 15: "The Super Beast Warrior of Bursting Flames" |
| Fusion Form 「融合形態」 (Dub: Fusion form[5]/Hybrid Combo[8]) |
A Hybrid Digimon created using both the Human Spirit and Beast Spirit of the same element. This "strongest Form" is the result of bringing the Human and Beast Forms into harmony, and fuses the human's intellect with the Digimon's vitality.[3] It has inherited all of the might of one of the Warrior Ten and has therefore acquired unknown powers and transcended legend.[9][10] Evolution Stage equivalent: Varies, usually Perfect to Ultimate |
Beowolfmon |
Digital Monster Card Game: Booster 16: "The True Super-Fusion Warriors" |
| Transcendent Form 「超越形態」 (Dub: Transcendent form[5]/Extra Hybrid[8]) |
A Hybrid Digimon created using a specific combination of ten Spirits. It is said to have surpassed even the power of the Warrior Ten.[11][12] Evolution Stage equivalent: Ultimate |
Magna Garurumon |
Digital Monster Card Game: Booster 17: "The Transcendental Warrior of Radiant Flame" |
Power Level[edit]
It is common to rate the power levels of the Hybrid Digimon Forms on the scale of conventional Evolution Stages. The mechanics of video and card games often require that all Digimon, including Hybrids, be treated in some way as either equivalent to a conventional Evolution Stage, or treated as an ordinary Digimon who outright belongs to one of these Stages. However, attempts to do so have varied over the years and often disagree with each other.
Anime[edit]
- Digimon Frontier:
The concept of Evolution Stages is not mentioned at all, but the show presents each Form as a linear progression in power.- Human Form Hybrids are depicted defeating Digimon as high-leveled as Perfect.[13]
- Beast Form Hybrids are so much more powerful than Human Form Hybrids that defeating them is impossible without another Beast Form Hybrid.[14]
- Fusion Form Hybrids are likewise significantly more powerful than Beast Form Hybrids.
- Transcendent Form Hybrids are significantly more powerful than Fusion Form Hybrids and the only Hybrids who are a match for Ultimate-level opponents like Cherubimon and the Royal Knights.
- Duskmon (Human Form Hybrid) and Velgrmon (Beast Form Hybrid) are major exceptions to this progression, as they are depicted as being a match for Fusion Form Hybrid Digimon.[15][16]
- Digimon Ghost Game:
Gigasmon and Calamaramon are considered to be equal to Perfects, requiring Gammamon to evolve into Canoweissmon to defeat them. - Digimon Beatbreak:
Seraphy Naito's Gigasmon (Beast Form Hybrid) is explicitly classified as a Perfect Digimon.[17]
Video Games[edit]
- Digimon Racing:
Agnimon's three playable forms are all assigned natural Evolution Stages. Flamon is a Baby II Digimon, Agnimon is a Child Digimon, and Vritramon is an Adult Digimon. - Digimon Masters:
Each Form has its own separate Evolution Stage, which are each classed as roughly equivalent in power to a natural Evolution Stage. The "H-Hybrid" (Human Form Hybrid) stage is Adult-class, but slightly stronger; the "B-Hybrid" (Beast Form Hybrid) stage is Perfect-class; and the "Z-Hybrid" (Transcendent Form Hybrid) stage is Ultimate-class. Fusion Form Hybrids are not present, and neither are Flamon or Strabimon. - Digimon Adventure:
Two Hybrid Digimon (the Human Form Agnimon, and the Transcendent Form Kaiser Greymon) appear in the game as Kanbara Takuya's Spirit Evolutions. The game's Reference Book does not identify any Evolution Stages for them, and simply lists their Evolution Stage as "—". In gameplay, Kaiser Greymon is treated as equivalent to Ultimate in terms of power; since Agnimon only appears in a cutscene, its power level in the game is unknown. - Digimon World -next 0rder-:
Agnimon (Human Form Hybrid) is assigned the Perfect level; and Kaiser Greymon and Magna Garurumon (Transcendent Form Hybrids) are assigned the Ultimate level. No Beast Form or Fusion Form Hybrid Digimon are present, and neither are Flamon or Strabimon. - Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker's Memory:
Agnimon and Wolfmon (Human Form Hybrids) are assigned the Adult level; Vritramon and Garummon (Beast Form Hybrids) are assigned the Perfect level; and Kaiser Greymon and Magna Garurumon (Transcendent Form Hybrids) are assigned the Ultimate level. Fusion Form Hybrids are not present, and neither are Flamon or Strabimon. - Digimon Story: Time Stranger:
Agnimon, Wolfmon, Ranamon (Human Form Hybrids), Vritramon, Garummon and Calamaramon (Beast Form Hybrids) are all classified as roughly equivalent to the Adult level. Aldamon and Beowolfmon (Fusion Form Hybrids) are treated as roughly equivalent to Perfect; and Kaiser Greymon and Magna Garurumon (Transcendent Form Hybrids) are treated as equivalent to Ultimate. Flamon and Strabimon are still not present, however.
In the Jogmon Card Game, the Fusion Form Hybrids are treated as Level 6 cards, while the Transcendent Form Hybrids are treated as Level 7 cards.
Virtual Pets[edit]
When Hybrid Digimon are incorporated into evolution lines in most traditional Digimon virtual pets, there is typically little to no consistency of assignment to Evolution Stages, both between different virtual pets and, occasionally, even within the same virtual pet.
- D-Scanner:
As a Digimon Frontier-specific tie-in device, the D-Scanner treats Hybrid Digimon separately from regular Digimon. - D-Tector:
As a Digimon Frontier-specific tie-in device, the D-Tector treats Hybrid Digimon separately from regular Digimon. - Digimon Accel:
The Digimon Accel series includes only one Hybrid Digimon, Bolgmon (Beast Form Hybrid), in the Ultimate Genome. Bolgmon is assigned the Ultimate level. - Digital Monster X:
Four Hybrid Digimon appear in the Digital Monster X Ver.2. Duskmon (Human Form Hybrid) is assigned the Child Level; Velgrmon (Beast Form Hybrid) is assigned the Adult level, but Kaiser Leomon (also a Beast Form Hybrid) is instead assigned the Perfect level; and Raihimon (Fusion Form Hybrid) is assigned the Ultimate level. - Digimon Pendulum Z & Z II:
Each of the two Digimon Pendulum Z series features a full evolution line of Hybrid Digimon. Agnimon and Wolfmon (Human Form Hybrids) are assigned the Child level; Vritramon and Garummon (Beast Form Hybrids) are assigned the Adult level; Aldamon and Beowolfmon (Fusion Form Hybrids) are assigned the Perfect level; and Kaiser Greymon and Magna Garurumon (Transcendent Form Hybrids) are assigned the Ultimate level. - Vital Bracelet Series:
For the six Digimon Frontier tie-in Dim Cards, every Hybrid Form is treated as an equivalent Evolution Stage. Flamon and Strabimon are assigned the Child level; Human Form Hybrid Digimon are assigned the Adult level; both Beast Form and Fusion Form Hybrid Digimon are assigned the Perfect level; and Transcendent Form Hybrid Digimon are assigned the Ultimate level.
TCG[edit]
- Digital Monster Card Game:
Hybrid Digimon (excluding Flamon and Strabimon, who are just directly assigned Level III (Child)) are always marked as belonging to the Hybrid level in the conventional Evolution Stage field of their cards, but some Hybrid Digimon cards also denote a class. Human Form Hybrid Digimon are rated as Level IV (Adult) Class; Beast Form Hybrid Digimon are rated as Perfect Class; and Fusion Form and Transcendent Form Hybrid Digimon are rated as Ultimate Class. - Digital Monster Card Game Alpha:
Hybrid Digimon are always labeled as belonging to the Hybrid level in the conventional Evolution Stage field of their cards, but each includes further parameters that instruct the player to treat the card as if it belongs to a specified natural Evolution Stage. Human Form Hybrid Digimon are treated as Level IV (Adult) Digimon; Beast Form Hybrid Digimon are treated as Perfect Digimon; and Fusion Form Hybrid Digimon are treated as Ultimate Digimon. Transcendent Form Hybrids are not present, and neither are Flamon or Strabimon. - Digimon Card Game:
Hybrid Digimon are labeled accordingly in the Form field of their cards, but for gameplay purposes they are also folded into the numerical "Level" system of Evolution Stages. Flamon and Strabimon are Lv.3 (Child); both Human Form and Beast Form Hybrid Digimon are Lv.4 (Adult); Fusion Form Hybrid Digimon are Lv.5 (Perfect); and Transcendent Form Hybrid Digimon are Lv.6 (Ultimate).
Terminology[edit]
The term "Hybrid"—sometimes given as 「超融合」, i.e. as furigana for the kanji 「超融合 chōyūgō」 (lit. "super fusion")[4]—refers to how these Digimon can be literal hybrids of humans and Digimon, who are created when a human fuses with a Spirit. However, use of the Spirits is not exclusive to humans.[5]
