Digimon Frontier (デジモンフロンティア, Dejimon Furontia) is the fourth animated series of Digimon.

News about this first came when it was officially announced by Toei in December 2001, when it was given the tentative title "Digimon Scanners" (デジモンスキャナーズ). The first images of the protagonists as well as their names, their respective Digimon evolutions and the title of the series was released in the March 2002 edition of the V-Jump.

This season aired 50 episodes which were broadcasted on Sundays at 9:00 AM - 9:30AM UTC+9 on Fuji TV, replacing Digimon Tamers (デジモンテイマーズ) commencing on April 7, 2002 and ending on March 30, 2003. Its timeslot was replaced by Konjiki no Gash Bell!! (金色のガッシュベル!!) on April 6, 2003. In the United States, episodes were aired on the United Paramount Network (UPN) commencing September 9, 2002 and ending July 14, 2003.

This was originally announced to be the last series of Digimon, however due to successes in franchise sales particularly during the release of Digital Monster X-Evolution two years later, this gave the potential to produce another possible series, which would be launched three years later.

Story[edit]

Digimonfrontier timeline.jpg
Digimonfrontier vjump 2.jpg

The Digital World was in danger of perishing. A world governed by the Three Archangel Digimon. But one of them, Cherubimon, revolted. The balance of the Digital World was destroyed, and it began to disintegrate. The 10 legendary warriors, who in ancient times had saved the Digital World in exchange for their own lives, no longer existed. In this most dangerous time, the spirits of the legendary warriors are presenting a new power to the inhabitants of a different world...the Real World. A group of human children enter the Digital World and themselves become Digimon, embarking on a journey of battle and adventure.

Overview[edit]

Digimonfrontier vjump 1.jpg
Digimonfrontier vjump 3.jpg

In ancient times, the Digital World was wracked by a major conflict between human-type and beast-type Digimon. Lucemon appeared and brought the war to an end, leading to a period of peace. Lucemon, however became corrupted by power, resulting in him becoming a tyrannical dicator. To combat this, Warrior Ten were able to defeat Lucemon and imprisoned him in the "Dark Area" deep within the center of the Digital World. After this they were separated into two spirits each, likely due to the injuries they sustained during the battle.

After the defeat of Cherubimon, deep from within the Dark Area, Lucemon sends forth his two Royal Knights, Dynasmon and Lord Knightmon, to obtain the Digital World's remaining data in order to fully break the seal in which he was contained. The Chosen encountered the two on multiple occasions as they tore across the Digital World, being defeated countless times as they successfully managed to obtain each area's Digicode until the entire Digital World disappeared.

Trivia[edit]

  • According to producer Seki Hiromi, the word “Frontier” in the title carries two meanings: “to trailblaze,” as in “[…] taking the first step into an unknown world […]”, and “foremost line,” reflecting how the staff “[…] put their enthusiasm into pushing the anime to the forefront […][1]
  • The original concept for Digimon Frontier was intended to be a more battle-oriented series set in a “Battle Stadium,” where a Digimon and a human would merge to fight in one-on-one battles. However, the plan was later changed into a more adventure-focused series. The original design of Flamon lacked his horn and tail because they were difficult to animate and control. The other fighter shown in the image is Gryphmon.

Digimon Frontier 15th Anniversary original concept 2.jpg
Digimon Frontier 15th Anniversary original concept 3.jpg
  • A nod to this discarded concept appears in the Digimon Xros Wars (Manga), where Agnimon and Fairimon are recruited by Xros Heart after visiting the Colosseum Zone.
  • The concept of humans fusing with Digimon —known as the Hybrid form— was intended as a reference to the Matrix Evolution concept introduced in Digimon Tamers.
  • Director Kaizawa Yukio explained that he wanted to portray a version of the Digital World that would normally remain unseen, and to imagine how it might appear once made visible. Rather than depicting it through the Net or electronic circuits, he chose a more organic concept: the Trailmon. These train-like Digimon would carry data packets from the Human World’s Network, acting almost like arteries that give the Digital World its shape and structure. As they flowed through this system, the data packets would manifest as DigiCode, forming seas and continents.

Digimon Frontier DW setting 2.jpg
  • This was the first series in the franchise not to be dubbed by Saban Entertainment. During production of the previous series, Disney acquired Saban and inherited its properties. As a result, the English dub for this series was produced by Sensation Animation instead.
