Digimon Survive[edit]
Shuuji was born as one of the sons of the Kayama family. His father was a typical Asian "tiger parent" who will even go as far as to disown him if he did not perform well in his academic studies. This has caused Shuuji much stress, especially when he also has to compete with his elder brother, who had superior grades compared to him.
Prior to the incident, Kayama Shuuji was the prefect of the school trip to the shrine responsible for maintaining order for the class. He was one of the students who ended up trapped in the Kemonogami world.
Some time after being separated with the rest of the group, Shuuji found Lopmon. His relationship with Lopmon was strained and he merely feared him as a terrifying monster. It was heavily implied that the professor's supposed death might also have been mentally impacted him.
Part 5 (Common)[edit]
During Part 5, Shuuji became increasingly insane after dreaming about his father's strict parenting towards him. His previous distrust towards Lopmon had exacerbated into straight-up emotional abuse, and he became more mentally unstable. As soon as he woke up on that day, he berated Lopmon for his perceived uselessness and spent the entire morning arguing with the group trying to take the lead from them, something that was met with swift rejection as he provided no practical solution beyond yelling at everyone to keep themselves cooped up at the Abandoned School as supposedly the outside world was "too dangerous", and the group preferred a leader who can keep their sanity intact and make proper decisions such as Momotsuka Takuma or Shibuya Aoi. Shinonome Kaito screamed at him pleading him to stop his insanity, Kimishima Saki and Hinata Minoru became annoyed at him while Aoi and Takuma attempted to de-escalate the situation with no avail. Before they leave for the Waterway, Takuma saw Shuuji abusing Lopmon and screaming at him and tried to stop him, but that also did not work.
He continued arguing with the other group members and screaming at Lopmon, trying to ask them to return to the school as they were making their way towards the Waterway to meet the Kemonogami cult in their hideout. This ends up being spotted by Archnemon, who found a weakness she could exploit from the children so she could find a sacrifice for the Master. By the time they reach the Waterway Gates, Shuuji was completely out of shape and was screaming at Lopmon while he suggested that he could help. Takuma can offer to leave Aoi or Haru and Miyuki at the gates to put him in check or leave him alone there, but this changes nothing. The group goes with Shuuji in the waterway and was separated by Archnemon. Archnemon distracted the group by mixing their own partner Digimon with illusions and hallucinations while she tortured and singled out Shuuji with worse illusions heavily implied to be those among the lines of his father abusing him.
Eventually, Shuuji broke down entirely and Arukenimon summoned a Mega Seadramon to deal with him, only for him to start beating Lopmon to force him to evolve in a frenzy. Lopmon Dark Evolved into Wendimon and killed Mega Seadramon in one hit, but quickly turned on Shuuji and ate him. Shuuji was not dead yet however, as his voice came out begging for death. This forced Takuma's Agumon to evolve into its Perfect-form in hops of defeating Wendimon and saving him. This was for naught however, as the Kenzoku approach Wendimon and sacrifice him to the Master with Shuuji inside him, killing him for real.
Shuuji is one of the two members of the group who will always die in a common route.
Part 5 (Truthful)[edit]
The Truthful version of the events initially play out as usual. However, Tominaga Ryo, who survived the events of Part 3, arrived to stop him by beating him back to his senses when he was beating Lopmon and forcing it to evolve, snapping him back to sanity. Shuuji apologizes to Lopmon and realizes the errors of his ways, and his resolve to live without regret rather than fulfill expectations for praise motivated Lopmon to evolve into his real Adult form -- Turuiemon. Lopmon will then join the fight against Mega Seadramon as Turuiemon, and the fight continues as usual.
From this point on, Shuuji's partner skill is available, which restores the SP of one partner Digimon.
