Digimon Get Back[edit]

Osanai is left behind by the other Chosen Children

In the past, Digivices appeared from the sky and were taken by five children to become Chosen Children. However, Osanai refused to be chosen. The other four left to the Digital World, leaving Osanai behind.

In the present, Osanai woke up while on a train ride. He reminsced about how those that were chosen left on their journey 25 years ago but none of them ever returned. After a year, the searches were all called off and the children were declared lost. Osanai wasn't blamed for it, even though he was the only one to return, which hurt him even more. This caused him to not be able to let anyone down again, even if it meant working late hours. As he walked, his child self appeared behind him and told him that was probably because he shouldered everyone's burdens and he should think about what he could and couldn't do. The adult Osanai told him to shut up since that was just a manager's responsibility, not shouldering anything. Osanai couldn't remember when the him from back then started talking to him. The young Osanai wondered about "responsibility" and how tough it was to be an adult, then asked his older self if he couldn't just quit when he didn't want to do something like he did back then. This made him despair then anger, shouting at his younger self to shut up and he'd never run away again. The young Osanai then told him to take care of something he pointed to and disappeared. Close to a trash can, Osarai found a collapsed girl with a Digimon in her arms. He asked her if he should call an ambulance then realized who she was: Matsukita Akira, one of the disappeared Chosen Children, as young as she was back then.

Akira recognizes Osanai

Osanai entered the hotel room he left Akira in after she woke up. Akira immediately got defensive, throwing Elecmon away and sitting up, then realized the adult in front of her was Osanai Taro, shocking him as he didn't expect her to recognize him since he thought he looked pretty different.

At a table, as Elecmon ate, Osanai explained to Akira that 25 years had passed and they were all declared legally dead. Osanai was surprised at how well she took it, though Akira pointed out he also seemed unphased by Elecmon. Osanai explained they had their introduction while she was asleep, where they both got terrified of each other. Osanai then asked Akira what happened to her and the rest. Akira told him he was involved and that they lost. She then explained further: the Digital World where Elecmon came from was starting to get swallowed up by a dark fog and they were summoned to do something about it, to fight to restore the order, such as a fight between the Chosen Children and their Partner Digimon (Elecmon, Airdramon and Muchomon) against a Greymon (Blue). They also learned of a way to fix everything: they had to gather the strength of the Legendary Ten Warriors. One by one they unlocked the Digikeys with the power within them, with Akira unlocking the Digikey of Friendship from Ancient Megatheriumon, which, when put on an altar, would've cleared the fog. However, they lacked one key so the Dark King defeated them. Osanai realized their defeat was because they lacked his Digikey. To improve the mood, Akira got up and decided to look through the window, as a lot must've changed in 25 years. Osanai said she wouldn't recognize anything as he thought about how he ruined the mood. Akira asked him what was the castle right by Tokyo Tower. Osanai was confused as to how she didn't remember Edo Castle, a landmark that survived the air raids in World War II. However, Akira pointed out they learned in school it had burned down, proving history had changed.

Osanai and Akira left the hotel running and Akira explained that she thought she had been flung forward into the future because the Dark King could control time. Because they knew this fact, they launched a surprise attack against Clockmon Tower, during which a big explosion happened which sent Akira to the Real World. Osanai didn't understand what she was talking about, and while Akira also didn't understand the details, it could fix problems with the past. Akira asked Osanai if he took his Digivice home, which he did as he didn't want to litter, reminding Akira of how serious he was. Akira realized they could use both Digivices to send her back into the Digital World then asked Osanai if he truly believed all that was happening, which felt like something out of a manga. Osanai stopped running because he got tired, justifying it as a product of his age. He said he half-believed it, but he nonetheless decided to fully believe Akira because he couldn't choose anything in the past and ran away. This made Akira blush in happiness as she pointed out how that part of Osanai hadn't changed. Osanai tried to get all the facts straight: history was scrambled because of the disaster caused by him not going to the Digital World so Akira was trying to get back there, defeat the villains, and restore history to its proper state. Akira pointed out Osanai had no reason to help her and apologised to him, but Osanai, breaking down in tears, only cared about helping her so she could get back to her family.

Osanai protecting Akira

Their conversation was interrupted by the younger Osanai reappearing and telling them an enemy was coming. Said enemy, Skull Satamon, emerged from behind a building and attacked them, so Akira pulled out her Digivice and evolved Elecmon into Runnermon, blocking his attack. Akira told Osanai to go get his Digivice while they distracted Skull Satamon but Osanai refused to abandon them. Skull Satamon's Nail Bone and Runnermon's Lightning Rush attacks clashed, making Osanai realize just how dangerous Akira's life had been. Akira, protected from falling debris by a barrier created by her Digivice, shouted at Osanai to go, as Skull Satamon was too strong for her to protect him. As the battle intensified behind him, Osanai ran away, screaming. He questioned himself on why he ran away again while Akira faced their enemy head-on. Nonetheless, he still got to his house and checked a drawer, only to find his Digivice had disappeared. The young Osanai questioned when he became so desperate. He told his older self it was fine to run away if he was scared, since he had no reason to fight and no Partner Digimon. Osanai acknowledged he had been running away but, while the others fought for their lives as children, he had been living a safe life. He knew it was 25 years too late but he had to go now. The young Osanai then turned into a Digimon, who explained he had been right by his side, waiting for the time he could entrust Osanai's Digivice back to him again. Osanai asked him for his name and he introduced himself as Agumon. Osanai asked Agumon if he was fine with him, 25 years too late, but Agumon said it was thanks to those 25 years that he was ready to take the Digivice today. Osanai both apologised to and thanked Agumon who said it was fine because they were partners. To make up for past regrets, Osanai put his hand over his Digivice, which glowed and released a Digikey.

Osanai vanishing due to the time paradox

After defeating Elecmon, Skull Satamon thrusted his rod to Akira, only to be interrupted by an unexpected fireball hitting him. Osanai and Agumon then arrived and put themselves between Skull Satamon, and Akira and Elecmon. The villain laughed at how Osanai came back after running away even though there was nothing he could do, but Agumon replied he could do anything. Having watched him for 25 years through his Digivice, Agumon knew Taro never ran away, but fought his best all that time, and would not allow Skull Satamon to make fun of him. Thanks to Agumon's words, Osanai could feel power welling up from his now-glowing Digikey, the Digikey of Courage. Akira realized Osanai's Digikey was the one Ancient Greymon told them they couldn't make, as it was a key that required not a fearless heart, but one that knew fear yet chose to overcome it, a heart that knew courage. The Crest of Courage glowed from its Digikey, causing Agumon to Warp Evolve into a massive Dinomon, skipping the Tyranomon and Master Tyranomon stages. Skull Satamon, now terrified, asked them to stop, saying he'd put a good word in with his boss and Osanai would take a do-over if he got it. Osanai, behind a barrier, accepted there were a lot of things he'd like to do over and would start right then. Skull Satamon tried to fly away but was nonetheless killed in a single Dino Breath from Dinomon, which also broke the sky, creating a hole in it. Akira was shocked at it but quickly got a hold of herself as she saw the Digital World was on the other side. Akira asked Osanai to come with them to the Digital World as they now had the final Digikey and they could fix everything, but Osanai couldn't as his future didn't connect to the one where they all didn't come home, which he realized would happen as it was a time paradox which caused him to start vanishing. Osanai pointed out Edo Castle was also disappearing, proof the rest of the Chosen Children were also fighting, so Akira had to join them. While Akira was hesistant, she swallowed her tears and accepted it. Osanai gave her the Digikey of Courage while promising they'd meet again, then asked her to take care of the 10-year-old him as he was a bit of a coward.

The Osanai family in the corrected timeline

Osanai then woke up on a train ride again. For a moment, he thought it had all been a dream, but quickly realized it wasn't as Agumon was asleep right next to him. As they walked back home, Agumon explained the Digivice backed up his memories, and now that he was back to the same age as before, his frozen memory was restored. Osanai felt everything hazy as if there were two of him. Agumon pointed out it was a second life for him, as if he was playing on New Game Plus, though Osanai thought there was no point in doing that this late in life. A young girl, Osanai Tomori, then pointed out to her mother that her dad and Agumon had come home, though her mother, a grown-up Akira, just told her not to run ahead of her. Akira then welcomed "Taro-kun" (who she now called by his first name) and Agumon home. Taro started crying, worrying his wife and daughter, but he said he was fine, just happy, then said he was home as Tomori jumped into his arms.
