Alabama Early Afternoon
An increase in cloud cover is holding the thermometer in check across much of Alabama this afternoon. At 2:00 p.m. most of North Alabama had comfortable 70s. There were some low 80s down south.
At 2:10 p.m., showers were very few in number over the north half of the state, but they were a bit more active south of Montgomery to near the Florida border. Lightning detection equipment showed very little lightning so far. The showers were moving toward the ENE.
Our main attention now turns west where a line of strong thunderstorms was entering NW Mississippi and extending down into NE Louisiana. Several Severe Thunderstorm Warnings have been posted because of this line of storms.
The NWS continues a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 8:00 this evening for much of North and Central Mississippi, SW Tennessee, the NE corner of Louisiana and extreme East Arkansas. The Storm Prediction Center continues a Slight Risk area for almost all of Mississippi and the extreme east parts of Arkansas and Louisiana. So far, they do not include any part of Alabama–even tomorrow. However, we cannot rule out at least a few strong ones. This afternoon another cool front was near the Mississippi River. It is expected to be on a line from about Huntsville to Birmingham and Mobile by daybreak. So, we will probably have a better chance of some showers and a few thunderstorms this evening. After that, the weather turns beautiful again. Mostly sunshine is expected for Thursday through the rest of the week with cool nights, comfortable afternoons and very low humidity.
