My Top 5 Ghostly Haunts
Alexandra Adornetto's Top Five Ghostly Haunts in the Real World:
1. Eureka Springs, Arkansas
Eureka Springs in the Ozark Mountains is home to The 1886 Crescent Hotel, America’s most haunted hotel. It’s a bizarre little mock-Victorian tourist town with winding streets and no traffic lights. It’s not something you’d expect to find in Arkansas. The hotel itself has been many things over the years, including a conservatory and a “hospital” run by Norman G. Baker, who believed in alternative treatment, but did not have a medical degree. It is said to be well and truly haunted, with eight ghosts that frequent the hotel!
2. The Chateau Marmont
Room 79 is a suite in the west wing of Hollywood’s famous Chateau Marmont that is said to be haunted. Living in Los Angeles, I’ve spent my fair share of time at the hotel, although I’ve never actually stayed there. But people have reported strange experiences in that room, like being woken in the middle of the night by blasting music only to discover that it’s coming from inside the room, although the source of the sound cannot be located. One woman even felt a strange presence enter through the window and climb into bed with her. When she turned around, there was nobody there but the window, which is barred and on the top floor, had indeed been opened. The hotel is also said to be haunted by the ghost of John Belushi who died there in 82 from a speedball overdose.
3. Ghosts of Griffith Park
Griffith Park in Los Angeles has seen it’s fair share of tragedies and freak accidents over the years. In 1863, Donna Petranilla, the niece of the original landowner was cheated out of her family inheritance. The 17-year-old placed a curse on the land which is said to still haunt Griffith Park today. Her ghost is often seen there as a woman floating around in a white dress, or as a “phantom rider” on a white horse.
4. St Louis Cemetery No. 1
As many people know, New Orleans is often described as the most haunted city in the nation. In this particular cemetery, situated near the French Quarter, there is a tomb belonging to the famous Voodoo priestess, Marie Laveau. People still visit her grave and leave three “x’s” on her crypt in the hopes that her power is strong enough to grant their wishes. The cemetery is made up of only one small block of land, but holds over 100,000 bodies. Many locals say the dead can be seen wandering among the graves at night.
5. Jack The Ripper Tour, London
Jack the Ripper is one of the world’s most notorious serial killers, who terrorized London’s Victorian East End in 1888. During the tour, which takes place at night, the guests track the killer’s footsteps and visit the murder sites of his victims. They are known as the Whitechapel murders, targeting women (mostly prostitutes), who died in gruesome, horrific ways. Many believe the ghosts of the victims still linger in the area and some have reported hearing screams late at night.
