Hi! I live in a big house in rural Australia with my awesome parents and siblings, drinking fancy tea and writing historical fantasy fiction that blends real-world history with legend, adventure, and a dash of romance.

If you like the historical fantasy of Gail Carriger, S. A. Chakraborty or Naomi Novik, you'll probably like my stories too!

Currently I do have plans to write at least one more fairytale retelling, although I think I will probably wrap them up pretty soon, since I wrote them for a few specific purposes that are now fulfilled.

With my existing retellings, I wrote each one as I found inspiration for it and felt I had something new to say about it ("what if it was Beauty who was cursed, not the Beast?"). It was less about picking my favourite tales than finding something compelling to say about them, if that makes sense. :)(less)

Sorry for not getting to your question sooner - I was out of the office when it arrived. PENDRAGON'S HEIR draws heavily on medieval and Christian imagery. The "axis mundi" symbolism seems to be conceptually related to (if not identical with) the Christian/medieval symbolism I chose for Sarras, which is that of the mountaintop meeting place with God (Moriah, Sinai, Mt Zion, Dante's Purgatory and the mountain in CS Lewis's Perelandra; or for a dark version, the Tower of Babel).

I'm afraid I haven't dipped my toe deeply enough into philosophy to know about Huxley's or Eliade's take on the subject, but I definitely think the "axis mundi" symbolism is related.

Glad you're enjoying the book!(less)

The institution of centrally controlled socialism was supposed to do away with capitalistic/mercantilistic aggression, but rather what it did was create a monopoly so gargantuan that client, contractor, and safety inspector were all the same entity, incapable of being held accountable by anyone.

“She stared at the featureless iron and felt more keenly than ever the distance between them. Now. Now was the time to say what might be the last words he would ever hear from her.
"Fight," she said at last. "Win.”
Suzannah Rowntree, Pendragon's Heir

“Blanchefleur felt a quick rush of affection for her. When the world frowned, Branwen went on smiling. There was a heart of steel under all that froth and bubble.”
Suzannah Rowntree, Pendragon's Heir

“I mean,” he said, “that by your own showing, the greatest threat to heaven comes from within the ranks of the angels themselves. Before you can prove to me that heroes can defeat villains with nothing but the purest chivalric ideals, you must convince me that heroes do exist, and that villains are not a fanciful tale for children. You must tell me, sir, if you dare, that you are incorruptible, and that your colleagues and commanders are as pure as you.”
Suzannah Rowntree, Pendragon's Heir

“Poets have been mysteriously silent on the subject of cheese.”
G.K. Chesterton, Alarms and Discursions

“A small daily task, if it be really daily, will beat the labours of a spasmodic Hercules.”
Anthony Trollope

“The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried.”
G.K. Chesterton, What's Wrong with the World

“The image of a wood has appeared often enough in English verse. It has indeed appeared so often that it has gathered a good deal of verse into itself; so that it has become a great forest where, with long leagues of changing green between them, strange episodes of poetry have taken place. Thus in one part there are lovers of a midsummer night, or by day a duke and his followers, and in another men behind branches so that the wood seems moving, and in another a girl separated from her two lordly young brothers, and in another a poet listening to a nightingale but rather dreaming richly of the grand art than there exploring it, and there are other inhabitants, belonging even more closely to the wood, dryads, fairies, an enchanter's rout. The forest itself has different names in different tongues- Westermain, Arden, Birnam, Broceliande; and in places there are separate trees named, such as that on the outskirts against which a young Northern poet saw a spectral wanderer leaning, or, in the unexplored centre of which only rumours reach even poetry, Igdrasil of one myth, or the Trees of Knowledge and Life of another. So that indeed the whole earth seems to become this one enormous forest, and our longest and most stable civilizations are only clearings in the midst of it.”
Charles Williams, The Figure of Beatrice: A Study in Dante

“Why was this bloody world created?"

"As a sewer for the stars," a voice in front of him said. "Alternatively to know God and to glorify Him forever."

" [...] The two answers are not, of course, necessarily alternative.”
Charles Williams, War in Heaven

Suzannah Rowntree Hey Marquise! No worries. I'm so glad you enjoyed the fairytale retellings, and I hope you continue to enjoy my writing!

Marquise Hi, Suzannah! Thank you for accepting my friendship invite. I've just finished a binge read of all your fairy tale retellings, and I ended up considering you an author I'll be following hence, hopefully for more treats from your talent in the future.
