There is, of course, the stubborn exceptions, but I've found that, in most cases, "writer's block" comes when I lose sight of a particular piece's purpose. It's easier said than done, but when you can retrace your steps, and look back on your journey (sometimes this means reading over what you already have-- sometimes a few times), the passion will come again. And passion fuels creativity.
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear about writer's block is that it somehow means that you, as a writer, aren't experienced enough / capable enough / creative enough / a good enough writer / fill in the blank enough to effortlessly sail over the obstacle. Not so! If passion fuels creativity (which it does), then writer's block is simply a sign that you have gotten over the literary honeymoon phase. Meaning, in short, this is a real marriage and you're willing and ready to fight to make this work, in the good and bad, easy and hard, beautiful and ugly . The catch here is to stay committed. If you divorce your project early on because the warm-and-fuzzies are gone, no one wins. Committment no matter what, yes?, and remember why you fell in love with writing this particular project in the first place.

Readers see the few hundred pages or so of finished product; writers see t…more"Being a writer" isn't a job title or a hobby as much as it is a lifestyle. Readers see the few hundred pages or so of finished product; writers see the thousands upon thousands of pages in the journey, the 12 a.m. wake-up to scribble down a story prompt in the dark, or the 4 a.m. all-nighter to "finish this paragraph". How we think is different: everything has the potential to blossom into the foundational concept for a novel or poem.
Half of me wants to say that my favorite part of "being a writer" is tied to the finished product: just hearing readers' feedback, and getting able to touch people's lives, and relate to people, in a way otherwise impossible. --And that's true. But in all honesty, I've got to say that, just as much, I love the journey.
I'll admit it: sometimes I despise the endless creative juices because, in the moment, I prefer sleep over tripping on invisible things in the pitch black to blindly write down a blurb. But in reality, that's what makes a creator. The polished work stems from all of those blurbs. And it's beautiful, just seeing how a massive, omnipotent, creative God is willing to share His process with a miniscule human being on earth. Just how He wants to wake His daughter up in the middle of the night because He has an idea He wants to share with her. By golly, the stars are His poems, so the fact that "random inspiration" comes very definitely from Him at His appointed times-- it's mind-blowing. It so solidifies in me two facts, really: 1) the fact that He never sleeps, and 2) the fact that He so longs to share and co-create with me.
It really, really is about the journey.
