I love talking to writers of all stages. For aspiring authors, I have the following five points of advice.

Read. Read all genres, read often, and don't stop reading. Of course, I give this advice to everyone!
Start writing. It takes time to figure out your process: whether you like to plot the book beforehand or start with more general ideas and capture that on paper. Today's the best day to start writing that book you've always dreamed of writing.
Don't be afraid. Show that first chapter to writers. Feedback is essential and authors will generally then give you some recommendations about their favorite craft books and pointers about what you're doing right and ways to improve.
Join writing organizations. Becoming friends with other writers can help you through difficult times.
Keep writing. Finish that first draft, EDIT that first draft, and then start a second book.

I've found the writing community to be very generous with their time, suggestions, and advice. (less)

In high school, my English literature teacher asked if anyone had a story for a competition, and I entered one. Then in college, I'd continually plot books in my head, especially during my PE requirement. For a long time, I was like George McFly in Back to the Future when he questioned whether he should write or not, only I waited much longer than he did to start. When my middle son was in kindergarten, I started writing my first novel and told my husband I wanted to be a writer. He asked me what took so long? He knew before I did. After my twins were born, though, I joined writing organizations and started listening to other writers and asking for critiques, absorbing the advice. While I had a lot of detours, I finally listened to those characters and started writing books. Wishing you all the best, too! (less)
