Vein of Love is book one in the Blackest Gold series by R. Scarlett. This is Ms. Scarlett’s debut book and it is a very interesting and unique take on the world of demons. This book was generously provided to me in exchange for an honest review by the author.
Molly Darling just turned nineteen years old. Molly is a very unique woman. She has white eyes that literally glow when her emotions are heightened. She also has super enhanced strength but she can’t control it. It never works when she needs it but has accidentally hurt people unintentionally. As a result, she keeps her distance from most people and keeps her eyes covered. She has a best friend, September, who is quite the character by the way.
Molly is not just an ordinary human. She is a daemon. 300 years prior her ancestors had promised a woman just like her in marriage to a demon. A daemon’s power can enhance the power of a demon. But before the marriage took place, the daemon was burned at the stake as a witch. So the contract was carried down through the generations until another like her came along. Molly is that someone.
Tensley Knight is the demon who is supposed to marry Molly. Does he want this, no. He has a life. Demons are not allowed to feel emotion. Their leader, Fallen, will literally rip out their hearts if they allow themselves to have a full heart. But he will fulfill his legacy and do what he is supposed to. But first, that means to keep her safe which turns out not to be an easy task. A ring has been keeping Molly’s identity hidden but the magic has worn off and others are able to detect her. And they want her.
Molly does not want this. Tensley is cold, angry and cruel. She can’t deny, though, that when they touch, she feels something. A zing of electricity, a strong connection. All she wants is to get out of the contract. She senses that Tensley wants out too. So she seeks help from a group of demon hunters to help her break the contract.
“She wasn’t sure who Tensley Knight was any more, the demonic beast who refused to release her from a terrible marriage, or the misunderstood man trapped in a messed up culture where survival meant being the most ruthless. Now she questioned how ruthless, how heartless, he really was. He didn’t seem heartless at all.”
Both Molly and Tensley are stuck in a centuries old fate neither of them wants, or do they? Molly will do anything to protect her family and friends. Tensley will do anything to please his father and fulfill his duty but is torn between what he should feel and what he really does feel. What begins as duty and fate quickly becomes so much more. More than either of them ever expected.
“You’re not the demon you pretend to be.”
This world Ms. Scarlett has created is a very unique and interesting one. I loved the struggle demons face not to feel. But for me, I had a bit of trouble with the book’s flow. It seemed a bit choppy for me at times. And even though I completely understood Tensley’s hot and cold attitude towards Molly, it still bothered me. By the end of the book, it seems like he has finally accepted what he feels for Molly.
And then there is Molly. She is constantly threatened, hunted, and told how her life has to be. I both liked her and didn’t like her. Some of the decisions she made killed me. But all she really wants is to get out of the contract. She doesn’t know who to trust and of course, chooses to trust the wrong people. But I have to give her credit. She starts out as this meek, scared girl but she does toughen up. She’s a fighter. And I loved her loyalty.
I have to mention the cover of this book. I loved it. It is what first attracted me. It will be interesting to see what is next for Molly and Tensley in the next book in the series, Body of the Crime.

It’s been so long since I last read PNR that I was pleasantly surprised to see I enjoyed this series so much! Vein of Love was a promising start to a four-book series, a story you’ll be addicted to, with an intriguing world built by the author, characters you love to hate and hate to love, twists and turns that could make your heart stop, and sexual tension given in waves.
A binding contract signed three centuries ago comes back to haunt the Darling family when the demons who promised to protect them is ready to claim their end of the deal in the form of their only daughter, Molly Darling. Her daemon powers—a very rare ability/race that people believe is close to extinct—make her a valuable asset to the demons, and the Knights will take full advantage of that by having her marry the family’s heir, Tensley Knight.
It’s Tensley’s duty to marry the human/daemon, and he’ll do it even if he hates it. He’ll just have to be careful and not fall in love with her and grow a full heart. He knows what happens when a demon falls in love, and he has no plans of having some sick, sadistic ruler rip out what little of a heart he has and become a colder and even more bloodthirsty demon like his fallen brother, Beau.
First of all, I would like to commend the author for her great world-building and for making it so gripping and intriguing. I loved that there are different kinds of demons, and there are laws that govern them, rule over them, and the social classes. It’s all very interesting. It’s one of my favorite things about this series.
I love the whole betrothed thing and the history of why the engagement came to be. I’m a sucker for that. Which is a little sad if you think about it because they’re forced to marry without their consent. But since it’s fiction, yeeeeees.
We have a literally heartless (or half-heartless?) demon and his bride who wants nothing to do with him. Not a good start to a relationship, huh? And let me tell you, it’s a long ride for Tensley and Molly. There are betrayals, fights, seduction, abductions, and too many to mention. So, if you’re looking for a quick road to happily ever after, this isn’t it. We spend most of the time in Vein of Love seeing Tensley and Molly battling their lust for each other with their hatred. When I say this is a hate to love book, I mean it literally.
I’m not usually a fan of the a-hole hero, but there’s just something about Tensley Knight that gets me hot! Is it the demon powers, the hot as sin looks, the hot and cold personality? He’s cocky, arrogant, ruthless, and he can kill without flinching. I usually steer clear of that kind of hero, but my lord am I putty in this man’s hands. I don’t even know. All I know is he’s my man and I will offer him whatever he needs to keep his strength. Heh.
While I loved Tensley, I have a bit of love-hate relationship with Molly. I loved her passion for history and her career, but when she’s not distracted with work and focused on getting away from the arrangement with Tensley, I wanted to smack her a lot of times in this book. She made a lot of choices that made me want to bang my head on a table, and homegirl trusted people so easily. I want to have a word with her parents on the importance of teaching children the meaning of ‘stranger danger’.
There are also characters who will make you question who you should trust. I swear I was on my guard every time a new character comes out. Should I love them? Hate them? Fight them? It’s all a mystery until later.
Overall, I enjoyed this and the rest of the books very much. Expect a rollercoaster ride filled with demons, sexual tension, and intense characters who are either irresistible or borderline infuriating.
And OMG, Beau. I want a book about Beau. (And we’re going to have it soooooooon!)

“Demons don’t love, they destroy.”
Okay, so this the new hot book on Instagram right now. I’m seeing it everywhere, and I couldn’t resist picking it up for myself. I will also say that this is a debut novel that was originally written on Wattpad, also this author seems like an angel on Instagram, so I give her all the credit in the world. I also expect that the other books in this series get a lot better. Unfortunately, Vein of Love just didn’t work for me.
This book stars a young 19 year old girl, Molly, who is the victim of a 300 year old contract that was set up by her ancestors. The contract promises Molly, who was born with ancient daemon (unlike demon) powers beyond her control, to marry a demon of a very prestigious demon house. She is also promised to give him an heir eventually, but he has to have sex with her, AKA mate her, so no other demon can pursue Molly, since she is a very rare commodity that would make any demon mate even more powerful. Her parents knew about this deal and this eventual engagement, and tried to keep her as safe as possible on each birthday, but Molly’s time has finally come for her to face the fate that was forced upon her.
“Never trust a demon, Molly. Number one rule.”
Tensely, the demon who is promised to Molly, is taking this contract only a little better than Molly. They both had lives before this forced arrangement, and Tensely is more willing to do what his family expects of him, but he is still apprehensive. Also, he never forces himself on Molly, and I really appreciated that, since this book has a big theme of “marking” her via sex, and he could have forcefully done it at any time and made his life much easier.
In this world, demons look weak if they show any emotion. If a demon falls in love with someone, they will grow a fully formed heart, which proves to the other demons how weak they truly are. Tensely is constantly trying to keep his feelings and emotions in check, because not only does he not want to look weak, but he is tormented by something that happened in his family not too long ago. Since then, his family has been the butt-end of many jokes, and Tensely wants only to see his house grow into the most powerful demon house of them all.
Molly, unsure of her new fiancé, is looking everywhere for help. Her family kind of just randomly leaves her, but her best friend is there and is more than willing to help. She also seeks outside forces, that brings a whole new demonhunter element to this story.
My problem with this story is that it just feels so juvenile. Maybe I would have devoured and loved this in my teenage years, before I experienced all the amazing PNR that I know the world has to offer, but in comparison Vein of Love just falls so very short.
Also, this book is constantly back and forth. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good angsty romance, but these two were so back and forth it was absurd! And I get that Tensely is unsure of what he wants to do with his feelings, but his actions were all over the place. Then, Molly also couldn’t decide what she wanted for the life of her, and she started putting herself in the dumbest and most terrifying situations. Like, girl, I can only blame you being only 19 for so long before I have to start making you take responsibility for your own stupid actions.
Also, trigger warnings for attempted rape, lots of talk/threats of rape, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and just violence in general. This book never felt that dark to me, but this is a story about a forced marriage, while a demon will gain an immense amount of power if he takes her virginity.
The rest of this review is going to have minor spoilers about a few of the sexual scenes, or lack thereof, in this book! If you would like to go into this story completely blind, please do not read the rest of this review!
Okay, that’s another thing; this book puts virginity on a pedestal. Not only is Molly completely inexperienced, but her virginal self is still a pro at giving a blow job for her first time. I can’t remember if there is any slut shaming in this book, but I know that Molly is very proud of being a virgin, even though she acts like a cat in heat anytime that Tensely is around.
Yet, even with all of these sexy themes and promises, there isn’t any sex in this book. Like, there is a few steamy scenes, but no actual intercourse. Which is fine, I’m not saying there is anything wrong with that. But with the way everyone once was making this seem, I would have guessed this was a hella erotic story, and it really wasn’t.
But for as much as Molly and Tensely’s back and forth upset me, I absolutely loved the side characters, Illya and September. Like, give me their book, please? I loved how they were both selfless and both unapologetically loved and supported their friends. Like, they were such a shining light in this book. I loved every scene involving these two. If I continue on with this series, it is 100% because of Illya and September.
So a lot of friends talk about this book ending in a cliffhanger, but I don’t really feel like it does. I mean, there is a million more questions that need to be answered, but I didn’t think there was an actual cliffhanger. Like, I’m still totally intrigued to read Body of The Crime, but that’s just because I think this author is so sweet and I really want to give her books more of a try, plus I want to love this series as much as so many of my friends do, but a cliffhanger ending? Did I get a different copy of this book?
And the plot is intriguing enough! I mean, for those of you who regularly follow my reviews, you will all know my guilty pleasure that is the Indebted Series, and this is pretty much that but with demons. I mean, sign me up for that concept.
Overall, this story just didn’t work for me, no matter how high of hopes I have to its successors. The story was just too all over the place, and the characters couldn’t stay happy for more than one page at a time, repeatedly, over and over. But maybe if you think the concept sounds unique and sexy enough, you should give it a try.

2.5 assholic demon stars
Vein of Love is going to be one of those books you are either going to love or hate, and it has all to do with the main characters. I'm most likely the minority here and most of you know how much I love me a cocky asshole bad boy, so I was pretty bummed that I found Tensley to be more of an asshole/ jerk. I didn't care for the way he treated Molly and the entire arrangement felt off for me . I finished the book hoping that something would eventually click, but sadly nothing did and the ending on a cliff hanger didn't help my cause. I do encourage you to try, my review is all about my personal reaction to the book and has nothing to do with the author's style or skill. Read it and see for yourself, this may be the goodie you are looking for.

Vein of Love is the first book in the New Adult Paranormal Series Blackest Gold. A blend of battling demons, action, intrigue, and passion makes this debut novel one entertaining read.

Tensley is not at all thrilled to be giving up his current demon lover to marry a demon who has been living as a "human girl" her entire existence. Tensley gains power from sexual connection and the beginning of his time with Molly leaves no room for physical closeness between the two. "I need you."Told in dual POV, Vein of Love has a very complex plot and fast paced action. Tensley and Molly are quite intense and the push and pull between the two was nothing short of explosive. I can honestly say that there were numerous times that I wanted to strangle them both throughout the read. I would get so frustrated with the choices they were making and yet, I couldn't tear my eyes away. I am certainly anxious for the next book in the series because I want these two to work their business out! The supporting characters enhanced the read, and I am certainly hopeful for some love to bloom between the besties of the two main characters.
Overall, Vein of Love has an intriguing plot, strong characters, and intense action. Tensley and Molly still have so much to work through, and I am ready and waiting to see what will happen next. If love is in fact in their future, you can guarantee a bloody battle will certainly follow!

No, let us talk about the two main characters. Both of them made me want to strangle them at different times during this book. Molly for being so naive and Tensley for his constant hot/cold routine. I had browsed a few reviews before I started this one and the consensus seemed to be most people couldn't stand Molly. Well as I am never one to go with the flow it was Tensley who annoyed the f@ck out of me most of the time. Molly was younger. She was sheltered. She had NO idea what she was or that she had been promised to Tensley. He comes into her life and acts like an asshole. Threatens her family and friends. Kills a guy right in front of her eyes. Then he gets pissed when she just doesn't fall in line with all his demands. I mean dude...I am pretty sure I would have acted the same damn way as Molly! *lol*
I am wrapping this review up now because I want to get started on book two. This one gets two thumbs up from yours truly.

4 "NEVER TRUST A DEMON" stars.
I have been binge-reading Paranormal Romance Books this month and I'm in awe of the authors I have met through this genre. Each one of the stories I have had the pleasure to read have been unique and special in its on way and I can't wait to read more from them.
Vein of Love was not different from them. R. Scarlett brings to life a world where demons are the devil beings we have heard about. Creatures that are not allowed to have a heart even though some of them secretly want it. A place where the consequences of falling in love are lethal.
Ages ago, The Darlings had a daughter with unnatural abilities. To protect the family from mass murder by witch hunters, they made a pact with demons for protection, the girl becoming the payment. However, she was captured and burned before the demons could collect her, leaving the Darlings with a big debt.
Demons don't forget about debts and the moment to pay has arrived. Molly Darling has been promised to the Knight Family since she was born. All of it because she possessed the "eyes". Making her an important asset to the demons, especially to Tensley Knight.
"Tensley Knight, her demon fiancé, existed. And he'd most certainly arrived."
From the moment the cover from this book was revealed, I got excited. Just look at it. It's fucking gorgeous. I had no idea what kind of mess I was getting myself into with this book but I'm glad I jumped into it, because the experience was totally worth it.
I have to admit that I struggled with the first chapters. They were slow-paced and I also got a little lost with all the demon-things. But then Molly went to bed with a knife LOL, and everything got more exciting and I just couldn't put it down.
At the age of 19 years old, Molly Darling has known how it feels like to be an outcast. With a unique pair of eyes, Molly has to wear sunglasses even at night, that's if she doesn't want to scare people. She also has to be careful with how she handle herself, she doesn't want to break some people bones when her inhuman strength hit her.
Some readers would think Molly is a little childish, but not me. I think she is a young brave girl, trying to do whatever she could to protect her family, friends and herself. Did she make stupid decisions? YAS, and I hated her for that. But at the end of the day, I understand why she did it.
Tensley Knight has that mysterious-sexy vibe on him. And I found myself hopelessly drawn to him like a moth to a flame. But that didn't stop me to want to balls punched him at some point. He was so fucking stubborn with all the Evelyn-I have no heart-thing. But then when he showed his vulnerability *swoon* I just wanted to cuddle with him. Love him. Kiss him. And other things...
"Love was a disease, a demon's greatest weakness and fault."
Together, Molly & Tensley were like a tick bomb about to explode. The small touches, the glances, the fights and THE HEALING part!!!. I was about to make a cut on my lip hoping Tensley would come to heal me!! That bad!
Here's to hoping they get to free the sexual tension in the next book. Because I'm not sure if I could handle more of it.
I have to mention that there were amazing support characters in the story. September being my favorite. She was a loyal friend and I lover her for that. I could talk about Illya, Stella, FALLEN, BEAU, fucking Cree but I would rather you read it. So you know why I hate Cree "The Prick".
For a debut novel, R. Scarlet did a great job delivering a unique, action-packed tale with deadly threats, an enthralling set up and a delicious slow burn romance that will have you screaming "MARK HER, JUST FUCKING MARK HER". Or maybe that was just me.

I love the way VEIN OF LOVE was written. It was eloquent, evocative, and thought-provoking. Each progressive sequence brought me that much deeper into the paranormal realm created in this story. The world building was awesome and the idea of demons walking among us snagged me. Has me looking at people a little differently ;) And I kept trying to picture what Daemon eyes look like. C'mon Natalie, they're not real. Right?

I was pleasantly surprised by this book! Plot was amazing, main characters have an intense albeit confusing connection and there's a LOT of paranormal activity ;-)
Bethrothed to a demon after a 300-year old contract, Molly tries to find ways to escape this frightening relationship and break her engagement with a hot, sexy as hell demon Tensley as she discovers her own paranormal abilities. There are bits that seemed confusing and would have made this a miss for me but overall, i enjoyed the evolution of these characters. Having been thrust into this unwanted engagement it seemed understandable the way both characters navigated through it. Tensley still holds a torch for his previous relationship but his feelings slowly change as he gets to know more of Molly. My heart did break a little at his constant push and pull but there's more to his story. There were also some scenes with other women which made me rather uncomfortable but the hero never blatantly cheated. I'm hoping he makes it up with some serious grovelling once he gives into his feelings in the next book.
Although not much is revealed especially with regards to their relationship, i'm hoping we get to read more about Molly and Tensley's romance as the story evolves. Full of action, suspense and some hot make out scenes, i am definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

A great beginning to what promises to be an amazing series! My biggest complaint to this story would be the heroine, Molly. Her attitude and decisions made me cringe most of the time. Aside from that though I loved the ground work that was laid to introduce us to a unique paranormal world that is fascinating!
Glad I waited until all four books are out so that I can read the series all at once! Moving on to #2! Can't wait to see what is in store for Molly and Tensley next!

Molly Darling is a 19 year old upper-class New York girl and she knows she's different yet she's oblivious of "what she is". It's her eyes though, they unusualy glow so she hides them behind the sunglasses. Her birthday party thrown by her friends ends up in a browl and a destined encounter with

an upper class demon and an heir of the Knight leading business within the Scorpio organization behind the scene of the human world and kind. And the fact that he's linked in the most unimaginable way with this girl, throws him into the inner turmoil of his own. See demons are ruthless cause they are heartless unless they are grown into the small part of it. But Tensley saw first hand what happens to the demons who grew a heart and the true demonic face and nature is what's turned his own brother into monster cause of it. He won't let it happen to him.
But there was no escaping from Molly, cause she's the one. She's a daemon. And she was both a danger and the allure to him.
Yet this push/pull sensations are tearing him apart inside cause he needs Molly for power and strength and to breed cause they were promised to each other long time ago...

ajsahfiad i probably shouldn't have DNF'ed but i've been on such a string of bad books so my patience has gone from sparse to ZILCH. it was basically like every single young adult paranormal romance ever but with some sex thrown in so i guess that makes it new adult. the characters were such cardboard cut-out caricatures, with the edgy asshole demon male character and the main character who has Powers (but not just any powers!! she is the Only One With These Powers) and she's just so... annoying??? and september, the cool-ish best friend, was also just... exactly the same as every other cool-ish sidekick best friend.
anyway i might have finished it if i was feeling more forgiving but i'm not, oops.
also the author sent me a very passive-aggressive DM that said "i hope when you have more patience you will finish the book" which not only ensured i would never try and reread this book, but that i'd never read another book by her ever again. as both an author and reader - authors, don't interact with reviews! even if in good faith, it makes the reader feel awkward as hell and is kinda manipulative, especially when on a negative review. reviews are by readers, for readers. just Don't.

Someone kill Molly now. End her and her friends. It'll save her from any more TSTL antics.
Molly is the biggest brat and TSTL female mc. She finds out she's a daemon (the only one) and promised to marry Tensley, a demon, and she has to be careful going out alone (a no no) because every demon in the world wants to either kidnap & rape her or kill her. So what's she do....continuously go out alone and to bad places you'd normally get killed in. Tensley or his friend have to continuously rescue her sorry ass and listen to her bitch them out for doing so. How dare they save her from immediate death. How dare they rescue her stupid self. Blah blah blah.
Tensley, her groom to be, is a demon, he's all hot and slightly evil. Demons are born with only half a heart or less and live to be mischievous and not kind to humans. He's all over trying to seduce and keep alive Molly. Unfortunately for him, Molly doesn't understand he's not going to be Disney good - he only has a half heart, idiot girl, and she keeps crying woe is me each time he doesn't fart rainbows for her. I thought he was an alpha asshole, but he's completely tolerable compared to her.
At the same time Molly is all in lust with Tensley and keeps trying to straddle him into sexy times, she's mad that he's not telling her EVERYTHING EVER EVER EVER, like ever, cuz like, she's his fiancee now and should know his deepest darkest secrets. Since he doesn't pony up all this info, she decides to be subversive and join a demon killing group. Yep, you read that right, she joins a group that is all about eradicating demons, the very thing her fiance is. I told you she was like super TSTL smart and stuff.
So, if you have at least two brain cells to rub together you can figure out how the rest of this book goes. Yeah. This is 2 stars because while I'd push Molly over a cliff in an instant, I didn't hate Tensley and I liked Lex. The world building also wasn't bad. It's just Molly and her friends that are awful. They're like Regina from Mean Girls.
If Molly wasn't so awful, I might've read the next book. I also didn't enjoy the nonstop "let's do it...oh, we're interrupted again for the 10th time, what timing" - that nonsense is ridiculous.

Vein Of Love is a fast paced story, with a slow burn romance and action!I have to admit that I find the story unique since I have never read something like this.
The storyline is very interesting and you can easily identify with them characters .It begins a little bit slow for my taste but once the story progressed I couldn't put it down.Tensley is arrogant,cocky,sexy and bossy.I really like him.Molly is strong and smart.

"Unless I destroy you first."
Overall it was a great story and now I'm excited to see what will happen in the second book.

Vein of Love has everything I enjoy in a PNR. Wow. Talk about being sucked in from the first chapter. I’m intrigued by this whole demon universe. Tensley who gains energy through intimacy, Molly with her golden eyes, the demon Illya and the soul eating Lex. I could go on.
Vein of Love was an entertaining and thrilling ride. I enjoyed Tensley and how he struggled against his own emotions, of surrendering to his feelings for Molly. Her character grew throughout the story. From a timid to strong. I can’t wait to read book 2. All I can say is that I’m hooked.

R. Scarlett has brought a masterpiece to this world in the new adult book, Vein In Love. A new dark and addicting story, bringing me to the edge of my seat every time the demons come to haunt Molly and Tensley. Honestly, I couldn't get enough of this story and now I have to wait until God knows when for the second book that I'm sure will get readers addicted as well when they start the sequel, Body of the Crime.
Vein in Love can be considered as a paranormal-romance, due to its dark and mysterious level of intensity that I have not read in a very long time. Penelope Douglas has always taken the crown for "Paranormal Romance Queen" in her book (which is also my favorite) Corrupt, from the Devil's Night series. But slowly throughout this story, R. Scarlett has taken Penelope's place in such an intense magnitude of darkness and light mixed together throughout this story.
The demon in this story, Tensley (male protagonist,) not only provides the reader with a massive amount of hate and love at the same time, for being the character he is, but he also provides a side of hope when he first encounters with Molly (the female protagonist.) She became an important asset to the demons ever since birth, and her presence became even more important when their chemistry become obvious to both of them. Their attraction for each other is none like any other. Their dark momentos, bring them together in an aphotic way that gives the reader an insight as to what to expect more from the story itself, and also from R. Scarlett as well and her future writing.
As to the other characters in this story, they brought a light to the dark prha of the story's love affair with Tensley and Molly. September, Illya, Stella, Fallen, Beau, and last but not least, the less greater than others, Cree... Oh dear... I seriously wanted someone to just grand my arms so I didn't have to go and destroy the pages in my book every time Cree showed up! **sighs** But I stayed calmed...
In general, Vein In Love captivated me in every sense. I'm really feeling like this series has a great potential, which is great for R. Scarlett as this is the very first book she has published. I cannot wait to write a review for the sequel, Body of the Crime whenever it comes out!

Penelope Douglas has always taken the crown for "Paranormal Romance Queen" in her book (which is also my favorite) Corrupt, from the Devil's Night series. But slowly throughout this story, R. Scarlett has taken Penelope's place in such an intense magnitude of darkness and light mixed together throughout this story.
The demon in this story, Tensley (male protagonist,) not only provides the reader with a massive amount of hate and love at the same time, for being the character he is, but he also provides a side of hope when he first encounters with Molly (the female protagonist.) She became an important asset to the demons ever since birth, and her presence became even more important when their chemistry become obvious to both of them. Their attraction for each other is none like any other. Their dark momentos, bring them together in an aphotic way that gives the reader an insight as to what to expect more from the story itself, and also from R. Scarlett as well and her future writing.
As to the other characters in this story, they brought a light to the dark prha of the story's love affair with Tensley and Molly. September, Illya, Stella, Fallen, Beau, and last but not least, the less greater than others, Cree... Oh dear... I seriously wanted someone to just grand my arms so I didn't have to go and destroy the pages in my book every time Cree showed up! **sighs** But I stayed calmed...
In general, Vein In Love captivated me in every sense. I'm really feeling like this series has a great potential, which is great for R. Scarlett as this is the very first book she has published. I cannot wait to write a review for the sequel, Body of the Crime whenever it comes out!

Overall rating: 3.5/5 Stars - Great beginning to this new series, I most definitely enjoyed it. This is also a great debut novel from R. Scarlett and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from her!

So, first of all, Vein of Love was a good debut novel.
I really enjoyed the whole concept of the demons in this book. Some demons, like Tensley, need intimacy to get their energy -- or else they become more or less weak. Other "types" of demons, Lex, for example, need to feed on people's emotions in order to get their energy. That, to me, was really interesting. That concept was particularly fascinating when paired with the fact that demons don't have hearts but can grow one. However, growing a heart is basically a crime in their culture. So, on one hand, demons need intimacy to survive, but on the other hand, it's basically forbidden to fall in love -- a crime punishable by death for both people involved in the relationship -- because it means they grew a heart. So this was basically the ultimate friends-with-benefits situation, but in this case, you really CANNOT fall for the other. It was definitely a nice twist on the whole demons-don't-have-a-soul stereotype and it was a great way to add conflict to the story.
Story-wise, the beginning of Vein of Love was on the slower side. The pacing itself was really fast, but the beginning mostly consisted of Molly running away from Tensley and denying the century-old bargain between the two family.
Which, a) made the story feel a lot slower than it actually was,
and b) made it harder for me to get into it.
I would easily have rated this book a half-star more had a few more things happened in the first half of the book. However, the story did really pick up in the second half and the end is what truly sold me on this story.
Also, about the ending of the book. When you say romance novels, whether it's a historical romance, a contemporary romance, or in this case, a paranormal romance, it's basically a writing rule that someone is going the fuck up at some point, and it's going to create some drama. And I'd say 90% of the time, it's the guy. So it's no surprise if I say someone did fuck up in this book. BUT, I was pleasantly surprised when it wasn't the guy who fucked up for once, but the girl. It was honestly refreshing. Girls make mistakes too, y'all! We're far from perfect.
So, world-building. For the first book in a series, there definitely was some world-building, but the fangirl in me wished there had been more. This book is set in our world, so there's not much to add on that front because Manhattan is Manhattan whether it's full of demons or not. So that's that. BUT, it would have been interesting to learn a bit more about the demon culture; how it came to be, how it works, etc. We did get some information about those things -- mostly the growing-a-heart thing and the fact that there's a demon prince out there-- but it wasn't nearly enough for me to say that I fully understand the ways of the demons in this book. But that's something we might get in the second book, we'll see.
Also, I wasn't going to talk about this because I didn't know this when I was reading the book, but I've just noticed Vein of Love is labeled/tagged as "Dark Romance". As of this first book, I must admit I'm not seeing what was "dark" about this story. So, if that's why you wanted to read this book, I'm not sure this is the right book for you. BUT, this IS the first book in the Blackest Gold series, so, we never know, the next books might be darker. Or maybe it's me. Maybe something I don't consider "dark" is something someone else would consider "dark"... who knows.

I'll be quite honest here: I didn't like Molly. And I've been told that's a common feeling amongst readers of this book. So, there's definitely something about this character that didn't transfer well from the author to her readers because there's a definite disconnect with Molly. Personally, my main problem with her was her attitude. She WAS very indecisive, careless at times, and selfish to say the least. Which definitely makes for a character that's hard to like and/or relate to. I will say that although she's all those things, I respected the fact that when she did a very big mistake (towards the end of the book) she admitted she was wrong. That takes some balls. Just sayin'.
As for Tensley, I don't have much to say other than, well, I liked him. I wouldn't say I'm downright in love with him...yet... but I did care for him and cared for what happened to him. Let's be honest, the guy put up with a lot of shit -- mostly from Molly -- and didn't give up, so I like him for that. He's a good guy. Doesn't want to accept it, but he is. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of his character in the second book. I don't feel like I know him all that well, but hopefully, I will eventually.
Relationships (friendships/love interests): 3.5/5 stars
Molly and Tensley's relationship was very much like a cat and mouse game. Tensley chased after Molly but didn't want to, while Molly desperately tried to get away from Tensley but found herself also very attracted to him. A love/hate relationship, if you will.
However, this relationship wasn't your usual love/hate relationship. It was different. Instead of having two characters that hate each other at first and eventually falling in love, Molly and Tensley's relationship was very much a back-and-forth between "I like you" and "I hate you". And sometimes, that switch in their relationship was literally made within the same paragraph. So, one line they were almost cracking jokes together, the next, they were screaming and fighting. And then a few lines later, and they were liking each other again. Hot for each other a second, cold the next. It sounds like I'm completely exaggerating, and I wish I was, but stuff like this actually happened in the book... a few times.
So the problem with that is that it becomes very confusing/frustrating after a while. The main reason behind that frustration/confusion was either, I was trying to understand why they were fighting all of a sudden but couldn't come up with a reason or I knew the reason but didn't think it was an actual reason to be fighting over. Does that make sense? It's important to have conflict, it adds to the plot, no doubts about that, but it can also become a problem if:
a) it happens too often.
Or, b) the readers don't understand why it's there, to begin with.
And to be completely honest, they did sound like two kids fighting over trivial things in some instances. So, like I said, love/hate relationships are great but they have to be done well, and this one didn't work for me, unfortunately. BUT, I'm a 100% curious to see how their relationship will evolve and grow. The ending of the book seemed to be hinting at yet another shift in their relationship (this time it seemed like a good shift) and so I'm interested to see how that might turn out.

For a first novel, I would say R. Scarlett did a good job on this novel. I enjoyed her writing, but there were also a few things I had issues with.
For example, something that struck me when I was reading Vein of Love was the lack of descriptions in this novel. There were A LOT of dialogues, but almost no descriptions whatsoever.
While that writing style might work for someone else, it didn't work for me. In my opinion, this kind of writing really speeds up the pace of a book and makes it harder for the reader to not only get immersed into the story but also to fully connect with the characters.
I think this writing style is also part of the reason why some readers had so much trouble understanding Molly's character and the decisions she was making. We had so little insight into her decision-making -- or even into what she might be feeling, for that matter -- that we couldn't fully understand her reasoning. So, that's definitely something I hope will change in the next books, because I want to root for her, but I can't until I fully understand her.
Final thoughts:
So, this was R. Scarlett's debut novel and it a very promising start. Sure, there were a few things that needed some rework, but overall, I'd say I'm impressed with this book and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more by her. I enjoyed it and I would recommend it!

Cover: 4.5/5 stars – I love this cover! I love that it's dark and mysterious. I love its simplicity. It's literally everything I like in a cover! It's also what drew me into this book in the first place. I saw the cover and immediately wanted to know what the book was about. So this cover is a success!
Overall: 3.5/5 stars – I liked it, it was a good first book. I'm looking forward to reading the next books.

"You're going to destroy me, sweetheart. Unless I destroy you first."
This was a fabulous start to a new Paranormal Romance series by an author previously unknown to me.
R. Scarlett surprised me with her original take on the demon "society", and a simple yet intriguing world building.
This story follows Molly Darling, a museum intern who discovers on her 19th birthday that not only is she a daemon with very rare and sought-after abilities, but, according to a century-old contract, she's also betrothed to high-rank incubus, Tensley Knight. Tensley, having been raised by an emotionally cold father in a world where showing weakness of any kind gets you killed, has one goal only: create an heir with unprecedented power. Little did he expect Molly's constant refusal to acknowledge him as her fiancé, nor did he plan on actually being attracted to her.
Knowing that it's just a matter of time until other demons will try to claim Molly as theirs, but also having witnessed what happens to those who get attached and develop feelings, Tensley is torn between frustration, protectiveness and want for a girl who's supposed to be a means to an end, nothing more.
I'm crushing so hard on Tensley right now. He was such an arrogant, overbearing prick at times, but it was impossible for me not to fall for him. I mean, come on... a hot, protective alpha incubus demon with a (hidden) heart and some sort of dubious moral code? What's not to love?
"There's no hero here, only a villain. Don't expect chivalry from me, because it's dead."
It took me quite a bit longer to warm up to Molly though, as for a good share of the book, she came across as a spoiled and weak doormat heroine. But, while I can't see her ever becoming a favorite of mine, I ended up even sorta kinda liking her. Could be worse.
There were a few amazing sidekicks as well, and those of you who regularly read my reviews probably know how much I love charismatic, substantial side characters.
I thoroughly enjoyed the author's whole new take on demon politics and rules, and the consequences for those who don't abide by them. The writing is great, as is the original storyline and the many action scenes. There's a little steam, so I wouldn't recommend this book to readers under the age of 18.
I did not love all the hot and cold/ push and pull behavior, though. While it wasn't hard to see where Tensley was coming from, it just got tiring and frustrating toward the end.
All in all, though, this was a fantastic debut. Action-packed, sexy, dark and fun. I recommend this to everyone who's into PNR with a little edge.

4 'I will fucking bite hard' stars!!!
I'm going to keep this short and sweet and start off by saying I'm beyond fascinated with the world the author created and that I couldn't stop reading because of how into the story I was! I loved how you're going to want to gut some characters but will adore some as well. You'll get invested in the powers characters have, drama, mystery, and plot of the story! The only thing I didn't like was how naive Molly was, but I quickly got over it because Tensley voiced everything I thought. Tensley... my dickish Tensley.... I adore the shit out of him. I love how straight up he is and how he doesn't hold back, but when he opens up, you feel it and want more of it. Right now he's one of my bookish boyfriends, but by the next book, I wouldn't be surprised if he became one of my bookish husbands.

'Vein of Love' by R. Scarlett is book one in the " Blackest Gold" series. This is the story of Molly Darling and Tensley Knight. This book does end with a cliffhanger that you can live with but it does want you wanting more of their story! really went in not sure what to except but found a pleasant surprise. Molly since the age of six when a ring was placed on her finger to keep her safe knew she was different. Her parents were always trying to protect her and keep her from being found because of an old marriage contract that would now be used on Molly. But fate can't be out run. Tensley is the soon to be groom to Molly if his father has his way. Tensley has been happy with one women for five years and thinking she would make a good wife but now his father has called out that he must move forward with Molly and 'mark her' since she will soon be found out by others who will want her. When Tensley and Molly are confronted with their fate both don't want to marry the other but the are finding that they are attracted to the each other. But start fighting this marriage and their feelings in different ways but in the end do they really have a choice. This was an exciting read and can't wait for the next book that continues their story.

Vein of Love is a great paranormal read with lots of sexual tension. I loved the storyline and plot. And because I'm writing this review after reading book 2, let me just tell you that it keeps getting better and better!
One day Molly is a normal human girl. And then the next day she is the only known daemon. To make matters worse, Molly also finds out that she's betrothed to a heartless demon.
Tensley is one cold demon because he has to be. In his world, demons cannot show affection as it is a sign of weakness. So, he is basically a jerk throughout the entire story. This forces Molly to seek help from demon hunters.
All she wants to do is break the contract. She doesn't want anyone to die. Unfortunately, the war between demons and demon hunters have been going on for a long time, and she gets more involved than she wants to.
I loved the story, but there were some moments where I cringed because it was like waiting for a train wreck to happen. I wanted to shake Molly and force her to stop making the situation between hunters and demons worse. Argggg!
The sexual tension between Molly and Tensley also gave me tons of butterflies. But every time things got steamy, Molly and Tensley would be interrupted by something. Eventually I was yelling at them to hurry up and have sex. One female reader can only handle so much!
This got me finishing Body of the Crime in one day. And now I'm impatiently waiting for book 3.
Vein of Love is a great paranormal read with lots of sexual tension. I loved the storyline and plot. And because I'm writing this review after reading book 2, let me just tell you that it keeps getting better and better!
One day Molly is a normal human girl. And then the next day she is the only known daemon. To make matters worse, Molly also finds out that she's betrothed to a heartless demon.
Tensley is one cold demon because he has to be. In his world, demons cannot show affection as it is a sign of weakness. So, he is basically a jerk throughout the entire story. This forces Molly to seek help from demon hunters.
All she wants to do is break the contract. She doesn't want anyone to die. Unfortunately, the war between demons and demon hunters have been going on for a long time, and she gets more involved than she wants to.
I loved the story, but there were some moments where I cringed because it was like waiting for a train wreck to happen. I wanted to shake Molly and force her to stop making the situation between hunters and demons worse. Argggg!
The sexual tension between Molly and Tensley also gave me tons of butterflies. But every time things got steamy, Molly and Tensley would be interrupted by something. Eventually I was yelling at them to hurry up and have sex. One female reader can only handle so much!
This got me finishing Body of the Crime in one day. And now I'm impatiently waiting for book 3.

It's been a while since I've read PNR, so I’ve been looking to get my fix lately. To be honest, I didn't even know this book was PNR when I picked it up. I actually fell in love with the cover and decided to skip over the blurb. I dove in head first and was pleasantly surprised by this story.
Molly Darling loves history. She interns at an art museum and has just been offered the opportunity to be a paid intern during the next school semester. Molly seems to be a normal girl with a normal life minus a few quirks. She has bouts of extra strength and her eyes tend to glow when her emotions get out of control. Because of that she doesn't get too close to people, so she's shocked when a stranger shows up claiming to be her fiancé.
"Thou shall not express pure affection or adoration to the extent of danger of producing a full heart."
Tensley Knight isn't a regular guy. He's a demon. He has his own life. He's even been with the same woman for five years. But now because his and Molly's families entered into a blood contract over 300 years ago promising a daemon woman to be born with glowing eyes to marry a Knight, it's his responsibility to wed and mark her before other demons find out about her and beat him to the punch.
"Never trust a demon, Molly. Number one rule."

I really enjoyed this book. I loved Molly's best friend September and Tensley's best friend, Ilya. These two were great characters on their own, but I feel like there could be something more between them too. I can't wait to read the next book to see how the story develops. Surely Tensley will mark Molly soon.

Demons, reluctant lovers, betrayal, and an angsty hero... What more can one ask for?
Molly is a beautiful blond from the upper East side, whose family signed a blood contract 300 years ago betrothing her to a demon. If you think that's heavy, then just listen to this... Molly isn't your average 19 year old girl... She's a daemon. Daemons are an entity that are very rare and highly coveted by demons. Their union makes them both extremely powerful and their offspring would be an epic hybrid. The thing is Molly just wants to be normal, she doesn't want to marry a demon or birth his spawn. Too bad for her, Tensley Knight isn't about to let "normal" fly.
Tensley Knight knew this day was coming. It's always been his duty to marry the daemon girl and bring an heir into this world. Unfortunately he made a life for himself without her. He has to give up that life and deal with a more than reluctant fiancé. Not only does he have to protect her from other demons, but from a plethora of other predators in the supernatural world. The thing is as much of pain as she is, he wants her... Just a simple touch can flip his feelings for her on a dime...But he shouldn't. He can't feel for his fiancé... But why not?
This is my first book from R. Scarlett and I was not disappointed! Once again I have to admit that prior to this book and another recent read I had been on a paranormal romance hiatus. Well I think my hiatus has officially morphed into a relit obsession, because give me all the PARANORMAL. Vein of love is extremely well written and really draws you into the story of Molly and Tensley.
This story has just the right amount of angst to make it interesting without being irritating. The side characters are interesting and add to the story with their personalities. There is a cliff hanger, but it isn't overly dramatic. I did feel like I spent most of this book DYING for the main couple to FINALLY just admit they like each other, but it eventually pays off and we get some hot naughty bits. I actually like the fact that you can't tell who the love interests will be for a bit. Not sure if it was intentional or not, but it made it interesting for the will they won't they. I loved the back story and why the betrothal was going on, I also loved that there were real reasons why Tensley didn't want to get too close to Molly. My only complaint is JUST MARK HER already!! If not for safety reasons just because I know when it happens it's going to be HOT! Come onnnnnnnnnnnnn, you're a demon. Be a demon ;) !

Vein Of Love is a story of a daemon's discovery of the world she really belongs to. It's also the story of a young demon an his discovery of the heart he never thought exists. HE should never fall in love. SHE should just serve her purpose. But rules and agreements are made to be broken, yes?
The time has come for Molly Darling to pay the the debt her kind owed the demons. All the things she thought were just nightmares now happen right in front of her and all she wants is a way out. The time she dreads has come, but is she ready to give what the demons want from her?
He knew lust so well, but love? No. Tensley Knight has been taught that falling in love is equivalent to death for demons like him. He's supposed to protect Molly Darling so she can serve her purpose, but never to fall in love with her. He's fully aware of the rules, but what if the lovely daemon is starting to make him feel things he's never allowed to feel?
Honestly, I am not much of a Paranormal Romance reader. I prefer my books relatable and realistic. When author R. Scarlett gave me the chance to read her debut novel, I wondered if this book is something for me. It may have taken me some time to embark on this PNR journey, but I am just grateful and happy that I finally did it. Author R. Scarlett has created a world filled with characters that will remind you of some TV series like Supernatural and Lucifer. In her world, demons aren't fork-holding monsters. They're beautiful and cunning and they will make you fall in love with them and hate them at the same time. In short, these demons-- specifically a dude named Tensley Knight-- are gonna drive you nuts.
In this today's book world, you will rarely find romance gems. When I say gems, these are the ones that just don't have an excellent storyline but the writing itself will leave you in awe. R. Scarlett's words and writing technique are just beautiful that she will leave you wanting more.
One tip though, if you are not a PNR or third POV book fan, you might find the starting chapters a bit slow. This book kind of needs some adjusting to because again, you're stepping into a new and super different world here. Just try to hang in there as you read and be patient since this is an introductory book. As you travel further in this book, I am sure you're going to really get hooked just like the rest of us here.
