Experience the exciting breadth of #1 New York Times bestselling author James Rollins’s wild imagination and adventurous spirit in this anthology of his short masterworks, including a new full-length novella featuring Captain Tucker Wayne and his military war dog, Kane, as well as eleven previously published short stories, gathered together for the first time.
In this breathtaking collection of short fiction, his first ever anthology, James Rollins brings together twelve thrilling stories that dig a little deeper into his creative stomping grounds and open vistas into new landscapes and characters.
At the center of Unrestricted Access is the never-before-published novella "Sun Dogs.” While trekking through the Sonora desert, a gunshot thrusts Tucker and Kane into an adventure that challenges their considerable skills. The discovery of secrets known only to the native tribes of Arizona threatens to unleash an ancient force that could irreparably alter the future. It also forces Tucker to make a terrible choice that will shatter his relationship with his soul-bonded companion Kane. As these partners learn, nothing remains buried forever and old debts must be paid, no matter the cost.
Other stories—each with an introduction by James Rollins—are just as compelling, offering broader insight into this acclaimed master’s fictional universes, including:
“The Pit”: a young dog is kidnapped and brutalized into becoming the bloody champion of a dog-fighting ring. But can this tortured monster find redemption and a path back to the boy who first raised him with love and compassion?
“Tagger”: A pair of teenage street artists must protect San Francisco from a demon who has been seeking revenge for centuries.
“The Devil’s Bones”: In this jungle adventure—the first joint story from Rollins and Steve Berry—Commander Gray Pierce and Cotton Malone must work together using their unique skills to survive a deadly threat.
The stories “The Midnight Watch,” “The Skeleton Key,” “Tracker,” and “Kowalski's in Love” shine light into some of Sigma Force’s secrets. Who were these characters before they were recruited by Sigma? What solo adventures did they experience? How do these short adventures tie into the larger Sigma universe? Rollins offers some clues.
And rounding out this collection are a pair of entertaining stories “Blood Brothers” and “City of Screams” that complement The Order of the Sanguines series.
Filled with adventure, intrigue, history, and speculative science, Unrestricted Access demonstrates Rollins’s remarkable creative powers and is a must-have collection for his many fans.

This is a collection of 12 short stories. Most of them were previously published, including The Devil's Bones with Steve Barry which was part of Faceoff. Most stories came with an author's note; what's true, what's not.
I borrowed this book for the last story, Sun Dogs featuring Tucker Wayne and his war dog, Kane. 4 Stars. I really miss this series!
- #2.5 Kowalski’s in Love 3.5 stars - #6.5 The Skeleton Key (Seichan's story) 3 stars - #12.5 Ghost Ship (Gray Pierce and Seichan) 3.5 stars - The Pit (a dog story) 4 stars
A collection of James Rollins's short stories to date, including a new one, featuring Tucker and Kane from Sigma Force, Sun Dogs. The stories are accompanied with anecdotes and author's notes into the science presented in the stories, just like his novels have.
Sigma Force Between the Numbers Kowalski's in Love - ★★★★ Your typical Kowalski story. Through a combination of bumbling and bulldozing his way through a situation, he manages to save the day. This little ditty is how he was introduced to Sigma Force. It's short, but any fan of the Sigma Force novels is going to like this. This was originally printed in an anthology book called Thrillers.
The Skeleton Key - ★★★★ Seichan wakes up with a shock collar around her neck and two hours to stop a doomsday cult from blowing up Paris. Thus begins an underground adventure among the catacombs. Even though Seichan has left the Guild at this point, she's very much the cut throat Seichan I love. Leads into The Devil Colony.
The Midnight Watch - ★★★ Nice little short story featuring Kowalski crashing headlong through an adventure with computer expert Jason Carter. This leads into Bone Labyrinth.
Ghost Ship - ★★★★ Gray and Seichan are travelling in Australia when they get involved in some betrayal off the coast of Australia. Rollins manages to pack in a lot of action in a very short story, only about 25 pages long. Leads into The Demon Crown.
Crash and Burn - ★★★★ Kowalski and Seichan crash land on an island full of zombified people. It's a cool Halloween-ish type tale that leads into The Seventh Plague. This was the best one of Rollins between the numbers Sigma Force stories yet.
Tracker - ★★★ A short story introducing Tucker and Kane before they appear in Bloodline. Tucker and Kane are a former military K-9 unit from Afghanistan. Now they travel the world helping those they come across who need it. I love the interaction between Tucker and his dog Kane.
The Devil's Bones- co-written by Steve Berry - ★★★★ A nice, short little ditty teaming up Gray Pierce of Sigma Force and Steve Berry's Cotton Malone. They both are after the same neurotoxin in the Amazon. I haven't read any of the Cotton Malone books but I'll be checking them out now. First appeared in the anthology Faceoff.
The Order of the Sanguines Between the Numbers - co-written by Rebecca Cantrell City of Screams - ★★★ This is the lead in to The Order of the Sanguines trilogy. It follows, Sgt. Jordan Stone, who is stationed in Afghanistan when he's sent to help some archeologists who have been attacked. When they get there the bodies are all gone and strange things are afoot. It ends with Jordan's team being sent to Masada, Israel where The Blood Gospel begins. It's a solid introduction to a new character and series from James Rollins.
Blood Brothers - ★★★ A little between the numbers story from The Order of the Sanguines detailing how the vampire, Christian, joined the Order. It was a nifty little story of the bonds between brothers.
Tagger - ★★★★ A young woman is able to impart magical protection by tagging buildings. She is beset upon an ancient adversary and must stop it from causing a massive earthquake in L.A. First appeared in the anthology, Fear: 13 Stories of Suspense and Horror.
The Pit - ★★ Jesus, this story was rough. It's about a dog who was kidnapped from his family and turned into a fight dog. To be honest, as a dog lover, I wanted to punch James Rollins for not only putting me through this, but the fictional dog in the story. Reading about this dog's "training" (more like torture) made me so f%ing angry. I know he was trying to be realistic but it was very upsetting. Rollins said he wanted to write something to impress George R.R. Martin but I'll take the Red Wedding over this any day. This story was originally printed in Warriors.
Sun Dogs - ★★★★ Newly written for this anthology, Sun Dogs returns us to Tucker and Kane in the Sedona desert when they investigate a gunshot. It delves into Vortexes rumored to exist in the area around Sedona.
Always a favorite author of mine, James Rollins has created in is collection of short stories, a look at some of my favorite characters and how they came about plus their deering-do and courage. Always such fun stories with the aura of science hanging in the background, these stories are both easy to read and keeps one on the edge of their seat.
My favorites are the ones that involve Tucker and his dog Kane, and wonderfully explore the relationship between an animal and his partner. Truly seen is the wonderful camaraderie and affection both of these characters hold for one another.
As always, I can depend on Mr Rollins to provide an exciting story, or in this case stories, that allow me an escape to a world of intrigue and danger. I definitely recommend this book to those of us who love the courage and thrill ride each book of Mr Rollins engenders.
I am a long time fan of James Rollins and have read all of his series and single titles. It's wonderful to see a collection of short stories that highlight characters from those stories as well as introduces new characters/series. I appreciated Rollins' author's notes, as I love understanding the author's writing process and his train of thought, particularly when it comes to long-lived series and adapting to new writing styles and storytelling modes. I would truly read anything that Rollins wrote because he's proved to be consistent with his storytelling. He delivers each time with historical, scientific, and technological insight all perfectly wrapped in an adventure thriller. I highly recommend this collection.
Many, many years ago I read excavation and one that Rollins was going to be a great author. I have every book that h e has written and enjoyed them all. He is a really great author, one of the best.
This is a great collection of short stories that hits the spot while you wait for James Rollins' next book to come out. It really helped that I have read most of his books. The Pit was a tough read but the end saves it. Sigh. Back to waiting.
This book is amazing. It collects all of the short stories that take place in the Sigma Force universe (one of my favorite series of all time) along with two excellent short stories from the Order of The Sanguines series. Combined with the Tucker Wayne and Kane stories that are in this, it becomes a veritable smorgasbord of excellent fiction. I also loved the Author's notes, particularly in the Sigma Force stories. It tells you what the stories fall in between the books in the series.
As for the other short stories in it, "Tagger" was a wonderful story (one I could see turning into it's own series) and I enjoyed "The Pit" as well. It must be difficult to see things from a dog's point of view, but between the Tucker Wayne stories and "The Pit", Rollins does an excellent job.
P.S. I will be reading the Sanguines series ASAP.
SPOILERS
I will say that this book contains one big-time trigger warning: animal abuse. In "The Pit", the dog's second owner is a real sadist, and the pit fights are brutally written. And in "Sun Dogs", Tucker's dog Abel is killed very violently.
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC. All opinions are my own.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I would love to have a dog like Kane. I'm not usually a fan of short stories but this is a great collection written by a great author. I've read many of his books in the past and I look forward to reading more from him as a break from reading my mythology books.
eponymous sentence: p280: I hope having them all in one volume has been both convenient and entertaining, while perhaps offering a bit of "unestricted access" to the behind-the-scenes origins to these stories.
*
The Devil's Bones grammar: p181: He barked out orders, which were instantly obey. -Funnily though, this was in its correct form on my stand-alone copy.
*
Tagger eponymous-ey sentence: p243: Over time they had grown to share a secret love of tagging.
tech: p240: With a practiced flip of her wrist, Soo-ling Choi shook the spray can and applied the final trail of red paint against the cement wall of the dark alley.
Something from left field, I'd say.
*
The Pit eponymous sentence: p266: Bright lights shone down into the pit.
tech: p260: The floors were unwashed cement.
p273: A wire-framed ceiling lamp shone off the whitewashed cement walls and lines of kennels.
This one is good.
*
Sun Dogs eponymous sentence: p327: The two smaller patches of brightness were called sun dogs.
This is the never-before-published story of the bunch. This is definitely a treat since it features Tucker and Kane (and a third surprise character!). I seriously regret reading this now when I could have read this a year ago.
Unrestricted Access: New and Classic Short Fiction by James Rollins is a very highly recommended collection of twelve short stories. Eleven were previously published and one is a new novella featuring Captain Tucker Wayne and his military war dog, Kane. In between the stories Rollins explains how and why the story came about and where it was previously published. This is a collection that fans will enjoy. Contents include: Kowalski’s in Love: A Sigma Force story featuring Joe Kowalski and a perfect start to the collection. The Skeleton Key: A Sigma Force story featuring Seichan. The Midnight Watch: Sigma Force story featuring Painter Crowe, Jason Carter, and Joe Kowalski Ghost Ship: A sigma Force story featuring Gray Pierce and Seichan on vacation. Crash and Burn: A Sigma Force story featuring Seichan, Kowalski, Tracker: A Captain Wayne Tucker and Kane story The Devil’s Bones: Commander Gray Pierce and Cotton Malone must work together using their unique skills to survive a deadly threat. A joint story from Rollins and Steve Berry City of Screams: An Order of the Sanguines story featuring Sergeant Jordan Stone and written with Rebecca Cantrell. Blood Brothers An Order of the Sanguines story featuring Arthur Crane written with Rebecca Cantrell. Tagger: A pair of teenagers need to protect San Francisco from a demon. The Pit: A young dog is stolen and turned into a fighter. (Warning, you may cry.) Sun Dogs: New novella with Wayne Tucker and Kane that shows " how grief is etched in bone and sacrifice is never forgotten."
This gives you a good overview of most of the characters that this author writes about. I loved each of these short stories. Keep them coming. I received a copy of this book from edelweiss for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
Really enjoyed this book of short fiction! Rollins has the ability to draw you up and carry you along within each of these stories! The Pit and Sun Dogs pulled at my heart strings! Great stories!
A great collection of short stories. James Rollins writes adventure stories with science fiction and historical fiction twists. But most remarkable us that, he is gifted at writing scenes from the perspective of animals . He showed that previously in some of his novels. This collection have two short stories about Dogs and they both are superb.
I enjoyed reading every page of this book. This was the first book I have read by this author and would love to read more by them. There are twelve short stories included some previously published my favorite was blood brothers.
Short stories really aren't my thing but this scrapped 4 stars with the various stores based around Tucker and his dog Kane, though some of the Sigma Force stores were pretty good too. Like other reviewers the story about dog fighting was not for me.
I liked this tale of short stories. It was good to hear additional Tucker Wayne and Cain stories, I have enjoyed those books. This is the same concept as Faceoff and one of the short stories was identical to Faceoff.
I recommend you to read these short stories and novella to see how well these go together, and to see just how this started. I highly recommend this book. #amreadingshortstories
Great compilation of stories, in a short story format are very easy to fly through the pages, there is one, indeed "completely different", The pit, which has very disturbing descriptions of dog fights and how these are trained for them, it's raw, disgusting but awesome in the quality of writing.
The book contains twelve short stories, all punctuated by notes about the origin of these works as well as various things mentioned therein. Like every other work from Rollins, these were also gripping and mostly enjoyable. Only the "City of Screams" and "Blood Brothers" seemed stale and odd works. But the others, especially the Sigma Stories and those involving Tucker & Kane were immensely enjoyable. Recommended.
