Magical species must never mix.

According to the rules, Simon Osborne should ignore the children’s cries for help. After all, they’re werewolf cubs, and he’s an apprentice mage. But for once in his life, Simon breaks the rules and rescues the cubs, saving them from a demon intent on draining them of their magic.

Of course, all actions have consequences, and Simon’s bold move earns him the displeasure of his peers and the attention of the cubs’ alpha, a man named Gray Townsend.

The last thing Gray needs is a mage in his life, but Simon did save his son. Since Simon is now a friend of the pack, Gray doesn’t have much choice about it—or the forbidden attraction that goes along with it. Unfortunately for the alpha, he needs Simon’s help to track down the demon behind the kidnappings—before it strikes again. Simon and Gray must join forces to protect the pack, even as they struggle to resist the temptation that threatens to destroy them both.

**Currently $0.99 at Amazon US with the audiobook only costing $1.99 more! 4/23/15**

This was a very cute, light paranormal romance by a new-to-me author.

What I liked were the first few scenes. I thought the kids were adorable and I liked the mage MC. I was pretty excited as I started reading because I also liked Poppy's style- very relatable. I think her strength was her plot in this book. I got on board with the storyline right away.

However, I think that the romance aspect of this book is very weak, which is a shame. It felt rushed and underdeveloped. The sex scenes also fell flat to me, maybe because there wasn't the proper build-up or tension.

All in all, this book was enjoyable but not memorable for me.

Mind Magic by Poppy Dennison
1st book in the Triad series. Paranormal M-M romance with magic and wolf shifters.

This book starts with Simon, a mage, rescuing 5 shifter children from a demon. Who wouldn’t love this man for that alone? Maybe it was an emotional day or something, but I cried through the first half of this book. “Oh, he hears the children crying for help”, (sob) “the oldest child is grateful and helps with the rescue”, (sob) “the children help Simon when he’s hit with a spell by the demon”, (sob) “the children make Simon a friend of their pack”, (sob). Oi.
This turned into a one sitting read when the mage and the werewolf Alpha become an item, and the demon comes back and something is strange with the magic.
Entangled, enthralling, and enticing. And some sexy hot scenes too. And the ten year old werewolf getting up at dawn and trying to mediate with Simon but falling asleep? Adorable.

3 Stars - A light and sweet PNR M/M

Mind Magic is the first part in the PNR series, 'Triad' (M/M). This author, Poppy Dennison is new for me and I didn't know much about her style or books when I started. ~ I choosed to listening to the 6 hrs audiobook narrated by Robert G. Davis.

It is the evening before Christmas Eve, the "big" day up here, so this will be very short.

Three xmas balls from me for a sweet paranormal with lovely cute characters —über cozy kids, a fun old auntie, a stylish old vampire, a lot of furry wolves, two main charcters to like— and a pretty good storyline plot. I liked most of it but I must admit that this book felt a bit like "I've seen it, I've done it and I need 'more'...".

Just 'hmmm' but I plan to pick up and give, at least, the second book part (Body Magic - and new lovebirds) a fair chance as well. ~ It may be me and the holiday stress. Who knows!?

Simon Osborne, a mage hears children's cries for help. They're a bunch of young werewolf cubs and for once in his life, Simon breaks the rules and rescues the cubs. He is saving them from a demon intent on draining them of their magic.

The cubs' alpha, a man named Gray Townsend, is a (quite) young grey haired new pack alpha and also a single dad. Simon can't but feel the attraction already the first time they meet.

There is soon steamy attraction and an well done though through adventure in their hunt for a evil daemon, or who it now is out there, who is trying to steal their paranormal unique magic.

I don't feel it's fair to rate a book lower than a three if I didn't make it all the way through. It wasn't terrible, I just really could not get invested. The writing was fairly bland and the characters forgettable. It's a shame, since the concept sounded interesting

I really enjoyed this book. It was a lot sweeter than I expected. It's not like other shifter stories, which was nice. Gray's son was cute and a nice addition. I was glad his son's mom was mentioned, too. But it did make me wonder how often that happens. The whole gay guy gets drunk and sleeps with female friend... Eh, I guess I'll never really know. She wasn't exactly a huge feature in the book or one of the evil women, so I can cope.

I have to say how much I loved Simon. I just wanted to hug him and never let him go. He was such a wonderful character and I loved him instantly. To me, he was a bit of a lost soul, but someone with a really big heart. The connection and bond between him and Grey's son was the icing on the cake for me. Him with kids in general was just beyond adorable. His hesitation is what made this story really good because once I realised the shifters mate thing wasn't the same as other books, I wanted something real to be built. Not that I have an issue with insta-love. I don't. But it's nice to have a change every now and then.

There were a nice few secondary characters. Some I loved, and others I didn't really care much about. But they all made the story a really, really good read. I'm really glad I read this book and I would recommend it to people who want a different take on a shifter story.

Re-Read on 4.30.13 - My current rating stands, but man I love this book! And Simon and Gray, and Garon of course :) I can't believe I accidentally re-read this book for the first time directly one year after I first read it :)

4.5 stars

Wow, I soared through this book in just a couple hours, all because I couldn't put it down! I don't usually have that problem (problem? that's not really a problem!), because I tend to put books away for a while for a break to read something else for a while before coming back to them. Mind Magic caught me and didn't let go -- most likely because though I've read stories that have just as good of a plot, or even better, the pacing here is really great. There was always something driving the story and all facets of the story (the mystery, the magic and worldbuilding, and the relationship) kept me really interested.

This definitely seems as if it is the first of a series, and my rating is going on that because it seems so obvious by the end of the story. I mean, the story is wide open and it feels like the biggest challenges have yet to come. I'm excited about that, because if this is the first of a series it seems like it is off to the right start. We aren't given too much information. In fact, we learn bits and pieces as the story goes along (always nice to have to work with the story instead of being given all the information for free), and not too much is revealed in total in this book, meaning that any future stories will have lots of room to grow. I'm particularly interested in Cormac. Not only do I want to hear all about his history and life (from him), but I'd love to see how his relationship with Simon grows. Grey is the perfect Alpha in these types of stories. Strong and somewhat silent (don't want him completely removed), a good and kind leader, a natural leader in the bedroom as well but not domineering, and hot as hell with all that grey hair on a young man. Plus, seeing a man like that bond with his son is just heart-meltingly cute. Garon was cute as hell!

So yeah, I really loved this one and had a blast reading it, though I feel like the author kept the story close to the vest. If that's for future stories, then awesome, if not... then well that would suck, plus totally refute a lot of what I've written here. Still, the story was written in such a way that it seems like there has to be more, so I'm just going to go with that :)

It's no secret that paranormals are my first love. I will read them before anything so the whole mage and werewolf thing had me interested from when I first read the excerpt. I thought I would love Gray more but interesting enough, it was Simon. I liked Gray a lot, don't get me wrong, the whole gentle alpha, strong when he has to be, put the many before the one, I like that. I respect that. But Simon is the heart of the story. He starts off by letting his conscience guide him and then his heart. I was invested in him and his happiness. I also love the idea f the 3 different kinds of magic with mind magic being the first.
I also loved the secondary characters, especially Cormac and can't wait to see which of the werewolves *crossing fingers* will be his. I know who I'd like...who I hope...I look forward to the next book.

I enjoyed the intro chapters; the kidnapped cubs, the unusual rescuer meeting his love interest at the end of the ordeal, a mage and a werewolf that wasn't suppose to become friends... but not the rest of the book. The romance and releationship developement was too weak and choppy to keep my interest in the story.

I decided to give The Triad of Magic series a try after devouring this author's Chosen One and Hellhound Champions series'. I was initially concerned that I'd get the universes confused, but that turned out to be a non-issue. The universes between this series and the aforementioned ones are very different, in spite of the abundance of shifters and magic users in them.

In this universe, magic users and shifters DO. NOT. MIX. Ever. It's very much against the rules. As you would expect where there is heavy segregation, there are a lot of stereotypes and misconceptions between them. Truly, we can all learn a lot from each other by cutting that shit out, and talking to each other, which is what I'm seeing is a theme, here.

I can definitely see just how far Macy Blake has come as an author. This series was originally published in 2012 and the writing is definitely not as good as her current stuff. The dialog is a little too formal and stilted and the plot isn't as gripping, and the romance was underwhelming. I liked the story, but I wasn't nearly as wowed as I hoped to be.

All in all, I'm not sure if I'll continue this series, or not. I certainly don't feel the urge to mainline this series, like I did Chosen One, so, we'll see.

This was one of those stories that grabs hold of you and doesn't let go. It's unique in the sense of how the world is set up, the pacing and the writing is amazing to where it keeps your attention while progressing the story at a good pace. The characters where interesting and intriguing while the plot had a few twists and turns.

I was amazed at how much I enjoyed this story. Mostly because I've been in such a funk lately that I can't seem to finish a book in one sitting anymore. With this book, however, I read it and didn't want to put it down. I didn't even want to pause to go to sleep or do all those menial chores I needed to get done. It was easy for me to connect with these characters, though, because Simon is just so loveable and I adored his obsession with plants. Gray is just the right amount of alpha where he's not overly dominate but he still gives off that power that's attractive. I honestly loved these boys and was sad when the story ended.

The secondary characters were funny and cute. I loved Gray's son, Garon, he was just so adorable. Cormac I was particularly interested in because he seemed so tame for a vampire. And I'm definitely intrigued by the other wolves in Gray's pack (especially Liam and Cade). I loved the way this book started and how it progressed. The mystery was good although I had a suspicion of who was doing it all but I still really enjoyed it because it brought Gray and Simon closer together. I loved how easily Simon was accepted into the pack and really liked how they treated him like he was someone special.

The only thing wrong was the story is it's a bit open-ended. I still have a few questions about it all and I really want to see how Gray and Simon deal with all that wasn't resolved in this story. Hopefully we'll get another book about them as well as getting ones for all those other secondary characters I enjoyed.

All in all, a fantastic story. It really captured my attention, the writing was solid, the plot interesting with unique attributes and the characters were especially lovable. I know this is definitely a book I can re-read and I'm anxiously awaiting any sequels to come. Recommended!

I really loved this book! Shifter stories are among my favorite stories to read add a Mage and a Vampire then make it an M/M Romance and it’s the book for me.

I fell in love with Simon right from the start, his determination to save the children knowing he was breaking the rules and his sweet disposition won me over. There isn’t a character in this story I didn’t like ....well there is one but I won’t say who that is, you will just have to read the book yourself. The children made me smile and there interaction with Simon was so sweet, I would have loved to have them in it more.

Gray isn’t your typical Alpha Werewolf and while I normally enjoy those types of characters in the books I read this was a pleasant change, it made Gray and Simon's relationship different from the usual mated couples in similar books, they were perfect for each other.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and wouldn't hesitate recommending it.

I can't wait for the sequel!

I'll go with the downside first. I agree with a couple of reviews I read about the romance. Personally, I think it's flat and uninspiring. I actually skipped all the scenes that had a hint of romance when Simon and Gray are together (plus I saw the word "baby" that Gray used for Simon *shudders*). I might enjoy it more if not for the fact that I just read few good romances before this book; so the romance in this one is not up to par. I like it better when Simon and Gray are apart -- when Simon are taking care of his plants or when Gray giving commands to his wolves.

Luckily, the 'other' storyline is better: the mystery on why the cubs were kidnapped. It intrigues me enough to keep going ... ALTHOUGH, I totally know who the bad guy is because he's giving me "the vibe" that he's just not right on the head, from the first time he appears. That one is a bit predictable.

Garon (Gray's son) is my favorite character here, though -- what can I say, I love children in my books.

65%....just bored. You know it's bad if at halfway in you're already looking at other books to read. I just felt like the romance was taking a backseat to the mystery of the kids' kidnapping and from reading reviews of other books in the series, it doesn't look like it gets much better.

It kept my interest, but too many things were not developed and unanswered which left me unsatisfied.

The beginning was good: suspense, mystery, excitement, saving cubs lives, fighting bad guys. I liked the set up and the paranormal world. But the plot was not developed. Too many things were not explained during the book and especially at the end. The ending was happy in that a recent interaction with a bad guy was successfully over and a couple is together, but too many story parts were left hanging - incomplete. This is the first book in a triad. The second book is about a different couple (two werewolves), so it doesn’t sound like it continues the plot and answers my questions about Simon, Thomas, and the mage council from the first book.

There were some male-male sex scenes. I would probably call them average. I’m not sure what to think about them. Maybe they could have used something more leading up to the sex.

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS:

DATA:
Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 190 pages. Swearing language: strong but rarely used. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: 4. Setting: current day Tennessee. Copyright: 2012. Genre: gay male paranormal romance, male-male.

This book grabbed me from the beginning and I loved every minute of the story. The mage/shifter/vampire combination was great. Simon captured my heart right at the beginning with his unselfish rescue of the children.

Simon and Gray were beautiful together and the ease with which they came together was refreshing, no torment here. The supporting characters worked well together and the children were adorable.

Poppy Dennison has a hit on her hands with this one. Definitively a recommend read and I am impatiently waiting for a sequel to this one.

3.5 stars. Good paranormal m/m romance about a mage who violates the rules of his people to save some werewolf cubs being imprisoned and slowly killed by a demon. Doing so changes his life more than he could ever have imagined... I suspect there's a sequel planned, so I won't complain about the things left open at the end of the story. However, I did have some niggles as I read, as there were several points where things were just too convenient or inconsistent with previously provided information.

This was enjoyable. I loved the pack and Gray was pretty damn awesome. His son was even better. The mystery aspect was well played and added just the right amount of tension. I think I would like to continue with the series but I wish we were getting more of this story rather than a new couple. I think the 'going was just getting really good' and it could turn into something spectacular.
Despite my hesitation I will probably move forward, in hopes of getting more of this adorable new family.

Reviewed for Hearts On Fire Reviews

4.5 rounded up.

While I had noticed this book when it came out, I was reluctant to read it because I have never been a fan of magic and mages in my stories. Tsk, shows me that I shouldn’t judge a whole subgenre based on a book or two I didn’t enjoy, because I loved this one. Simon is having trouble with becoming a full mage – his apprenticeship has to be over at age 25, and he’s nearly there. He shouldn’t be putting anything ahead of his training, yet how can he not? It’s werecubs! Children! They are all taught not to associate with other magical creatures, but he can’t not answer a call for help even when he knows there will be repercussions for himself. It’s what makes Simon so amazing.

While I liked Gray, I felt the glory of the book goes to Simon and Garon, Gray’s son. Such a young boy, Garon, yet he knows to trust his instincts. “I am Garon, son of Gray. I declare you friend of the High Moon Pack.” This could have been silly, yet it was a powerful thing. Emma, as well, she just knows what is supposed to be done. “Cade is mean and won’t let us in…Alpha said I could always call him if I needed help, and I need him to help me make you move.” Just adorable, yet a girl who knows what has to be done, even at five!

I was impressed with the idea of the concept of magic as a triangle – mind magic, body magic, soul magic. This was unique for me, and apparently the concept that some of creatures had combinations was unique to Gray and pack, as well. It is to Gray’s credit that as he is faced with contradictions to what he has been taught, as Alpha he is open to changing his thinking. Good for him!

Even more, I thought the relationship building of Gray and Simon was more on par with attraction to each other combined with responsibilities (to the pack and to Simon’s training). While they definitely were in lust, there were adult responses to things, such as Gray acknowledging that associating with the pack may cause deep problems for Simon, so they should be apart at that time. It was less the “mating pull” type of thing and more of a personality pull. Once the wolf chooses a mate and claims them, then it is for life, but there is no mystical force choosing for them. That was appreciated. When Cormac is reminiscing about his familiar, Silas, so sweet and so sad.

The bad guy angle does become apparent a bit early, but that didn’t detract from the story at all. The world building is terrific, and I would love to see more from this world. Hmmm, maybe a vampire and????

Very recommended for paranormal fans.

I was expecting a gay Harry Dresdon style story, Mind Magic is not that story.

**Audiobook addition**
2.3

So Mind Magic isn't BAD per say it is just horribly boring, and the main reason for me was I felt NO chemistry whatsoever between the two MCs. My all time favorite genre/trope is Shifters and their mates, it makes me all warm and gooey inside, but even the mate trope fell super flat. The narration was not bad, but also I was not wowed, I ended up setting the last 17 min to 2x speed to just finish this book. I wouldn't rule out reading another Poppy Dennison book, but I don't think I'll be moving on to the next in this series unless it's also free.

i like the plot pretty much, i mean a vamp and a werewolf getting involved? hell yeah..
but there were so many points that were missed, especially about Simon's life-style, it wasn't mentioned even for once that he got "thirsty" or that he went hunting, and he's a vampire who drinks herbs.. i don't mind the herbs, but i wish this book was just a little heavier than this.
peace out.

Simon Osborne is a mage apprentice. Magical law prohibits species from mixing, however, Simon is unable to ignore the were cubs’ cries for help. Simon breaks the rules and rescues the children from a demon who is painfully draining the cubs of their magic. When Simon returns the cubs to their pack he comes to the attention of the pack alpha, Gray Townsend. Gray is grateful to Simon for saving his son (twice) and the other were cubs. He is drawn to Simon but does not need a mage to complicate his life. Despite his initial misgivings, Gray finds himself attracted to Simon who is now a friend of the pack. As they spend more time together trying to track down the demon responsible for the kidnappings, their developing feelings for one another threaten both their lives.

I really enjoyed this book. The story was sweet and romantic. I loved the extended cast of characters, especially the were cubs. Gray is the consummate alpha and I adored him. Simon was just alright but the mystery surrounding him and the demon was riveting. I blazed through this book in no time at all and immediately reached for book 2.

Bottom-line: an engrossing read about weres, mages, and demons with interesting characters and a fast-paced plot.

I'm surprised how much I loved this. The characters are so distinct and a-typical. I love that the mage, Simon, is young and sweet and quite clueless as to how powerful he really is. I love that Gray is a reasonable man, a smart and strong but gentle alpha not ruled by his animal like so many are in shifter books. I really love the quiet, unassuming vampire who's not even remotely dark and brooding. And then there are the kids, and the pack... *sigh* ... I will be watching and waiting for more.

I liked this quite a bit; it was an interesting take on the different types of magic and a good start to a new (for me) series. Unlike in many a Book 1, there are a few of the side characters who have their own subsequent books playing small but significant parts in this one...but they don't distract from the main story itself or feel "placed" in anticipation for those books.

Shelby says everything else better than I could.

I really enjoyed this book - I zipped right through it and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. I liked the concept of three different types of magic: mind, body and soul with each type of supernatural having a specific type. It was also interesting that in this world the types of supernaturals never mix and stay far away from each other to the point that they know very little about each other. I adored Garon, Gray's son, who pointed out that it was pretty silly and that all the supernaturals were talking about energy and isn't really the same thing.

I thought I would love Gray and don't get me wrong I liked him a lot but I ended up more intrigued and fascinated by Simon. He does a lot of growing in this book from the time he follows his heart to rescue the cubs to the end when he makes some interesting discoveries about the mages. Gray is a great Alpha character who doesn't take it too far. He's all about the needs of the many and taking care of his pack. I loved that he started taking care of Simon before things were really settled between the two of them. I did find the instant connection a bit off since in the book it says that the mate bond doesn't settle in until they choose each other and they didn't do that until farther into the book.

I found the way that the mages isolate themselves interesting as well and it really added some sweet moments as Simon integrated with the noise, touching and feeling within the pack. It also explained some of his decisions along the way and why he was a bit naive.

The plot was a little predictable and I figured out the villain and what was going on very early in the book but that didn't really distract from my enjoyment. I will say that a few of the major plot points seemed to be skimmed over and I would have liked a little more depth on a few of them like what Simon's mentor was doing to him. The secondary characters were well rounded and didn't take away from the main characters but have me looking forward to books about them especially Cormac.

Definitely looking forward to reading more books in the series.
