I liked this quite a bit; it was an interesting take on the different types of magic and a good start to a new (for me) series. Unlike in many a Book 1, there are a few of the side characters who have their own subsequent books playing small but significant parts in this one...but they don't distract from the main story itself or feel "placed" in anticipation for those books.
Shelby says everything else better than I could.
