When I said I needed a midlife reboot, growing pumpkins in a town full of bear people wasn’t what I had in mind. Neither was falling for one of them.
I should’ve been more specific when I asked the universe for a change Because here I am at 44, left with my late aunt’s rundown farmhouse And a pumpkin patch I know jack about running. But hey, at least it came with a view. My hot new neighbor stepped out of the shower in plain sight, Giving me a very warm welcome to the neighborhood. Turns out Duke’s not only a hunky cop but the chief of police. When I run into him at a Halloween party in town, There’s no disguising the raw desire between us. And for a woman who’d never seen herself with kids, His three little ones burrowed their way into my heart. But not everyone in town is as welcoming as the McMillans. Hillbillies are trying to intimidate me into selling my land, And when they realize I won’t budge, all hell breaks loose. Now I’m uncovering dark secrets that should’ve remained hidden, And Duke swears he’ll stop at nothing to protect me. But I’ll soon discover Duke and his kids have a secret of their own.

Meg Ripley is an author of steamy shifter romances. A Seattle native who’s relocated to New England, she can often be found whipping up her next tale curled up in a local coffee house with a cappuccino and her laptop.
This one was cute! I loved how Tricia was trying to figure out her life now that she inherited the house and pumpkin farm. Things didn't exactly go how she expected and she learned of shifters in the worst way possible, but things ended well in the end. Tricia found what she was looking for and so much more!
I've listened to many, if not all, of the books in this series, and I like the author's midlife mates formula. The couples do seem to jump into bed, or in this case, get intimate against a building, a bit too quickly, usually making things awkward between them for a while. That happened in this book. Considering the stories are relatively short, I think they would be more fun if they had more relationship build-up before they “do the deed,” giving the couple more happy on-screen time together. The way it's written, they spend too much time apart, brooding over the awkwardness and lack of potential as a future couple. Romances are so much more delightful when the couple has a lot of shared time together, not distanced because of awkwardness or doubts. Let us see their attraction beyond lust; let us size up their potential, even if they can’t see it!
The hero lost his wife to cancer a year ago, and this is the first time he's hooked up with or been attracted to a woman since her death. This makes him feel a bit guilty, of course. He has three charming children, including twin 6-year-olds, a boy and a girl. Even though he's a bit gruff and the children have gone through their own stages of grieving for their mother, the children are well adjusted and actually kind hearted. The heroine gets injured early in the story, and when the children see her struggling to get her pumpkins ready for sale, they give up their play to help her! She never had children, but they get along very well, and their scenes show she has a natural motherly bent. (I particularly loved how she kept trick-or-treating going and even made it better for the kids after a minor injury!) These books have a dangerous element as well as the romance and family/clan drama. In this book, the heroine has inherited a house and pumpkin patch the neighbors desperately want to buy—so desperately they're willing to injure others, destroy property, and perhaps even kill. Yikes! This situation comes to a very dramatic climax that leaves the heroine stunned. Let's just say it's very clear the hero is not just a man! She also comes to appreciate what being a part of his special community means. They do take care of their own.
If you enjoy reading or listening to steamy shifter romances and appreciate love stories starring middle-aged characters, you will probably enjoy this book. If you've read or listened to other books in this series, you'll know what to expect, even though the circumstances change. If you're new to the series, you won't be confused if you start with this book, as it can easily stand alone. As I stated at the start of this review, the stories in this series are a bit formulaic, but that isn't necessarily bad if the formula is good! I find myself looking forward to new audiobooks in the series, snapping them up (and listening to them quickly!) as soon as I see them at a book review site.
I received a promo code for this audiobook, but that did not affect my review.
This single dad shifter romance was a great way to spend a few hours of time. Its quickly moving and lighthearted plot was easy to follow despite being one of many in this standalone series, and it had the right amount of sweetness and spice to balance it out. The characters felt fully rounded with individual backstories and clear characterizations, and along with the rich world-building, created a story readers could be fully immersed into and entertained by.
The plot was simple and character driven, but had its share of suspenseful moments to balance out the romance. It moved quickly and avoided filler moments, making sure every scene was an important component to the story in one way or another. The shifter aspect of this book had less of an impact than I thought it would, but I still enjoyed reading this romance book regardless.
The main characters’ romance definitely started off fast, growing stronger as they got to know each other and got closer beyond a physical attraction. As middle aged characters, both MCs had plenty of backstory behind them, but the author always made sure to focus mostly on the present events of their lives (which I really appreciated as a reader who dislikes having to read about past relationships!) Along with that, I really liked how the addition of the MMC’s kids didn’t feel forced within their relationship; instead, it was a realistic look at what dating someone with kids can be like and the struggles that can come with that.
As a standalone in a series of connected standalones, the author does a good job of letting the reader know only what is needed to understand the current story and the world it takes place in. This made it easy to jump into the book and focus on the MCs’ story without having to read through a ton of extra information about past books. Having said that, I’ve added the rest of the series to my TBR, since briefly being introduced to other characters and the town they live in made me curious to know about their own stories.
All in all, this single dad shifter book had an entertaining story full of sweetness, spice, and just the right amount of suspense to keep the quick-paced plot moving. I really liked it.
TRIGGER WARNINGS: Slight spoilers ahead. This book is pretty light with common triggers, but still includes: past death of a partner from cancer (off page; 1 year since MMC’s fated mate passed), light mentions of the MMC and his kids grieving their mom/mate (on page), intimidation ranging from using a physical presence to intimidate, to using physical violence resulting in an injury (all on page), and no mention of contraception.
Story: Tricia (h) inherits a rundown farmhouse with a pumpkin patch in the small town of Carlton and sees it as a chance for a fresh start, though she worries about the challenge of restoring the farmhouse and managing the pumpkin crop. Soon after moving in, Tricia meets her neighbor, Duke (H), a widowed police chief with a mysterious aura, and finds herself drawn to him, as he is to her. However, Tricia quickly learns that Duke's life is filled with responsibilities as the father of three young children, Mason, Mia, and Oliver, and as the town’s protector. As Tricia and Duke grow closer, Tricia finds herself entangled in a dangerous feud between two rival clans, the Thompsons and the Johnstons, and when Tricia refuses to sell, her life is in danger, and Duke will have to come to her aid. The generations-long feud takes on new meaning when Tricia discovers that Duke and the other members of his clan are bear shifters, shattering her understanding of the world. As the threats against her escalate, Tricia must decide whether to stay and fight for her new home or return to the safety of her old life. Hot and steamy midlife, bear shifter romance, exploring love, loyalty, danger, new beginnings, found family, community and finding a place where you truly belong, even if it’s not where you expected.
Audio: Narrator D.C. Cole does a great job with Duke and other male voices, and a good job with Tricia's voice - I personally prefer a female narrator is used to voice female voices. The audio quality is good and there were no issues.
Next Door Midlife Bear continues the Shifter Nation: Fated Over Forty series with a fun, sexy tale with more than just a touch of danger as Duke and Tricia have sparks flying at their first encounter. First off though, I adored Duke’s three kids. I straight-out adored them, they’re funny, realistic, and play a large part in how the grown-ups come together.
When Tricia and her twin return to their recently deceased aunt’s hometown both are in for a surprise. But right now, Tricia is questioning her sanity in even making the move. Really? What does she know about pumpkins? But her next-door neighbor might just give her some incentive to learn a bit, that’s for sure. Unfortunately, real danger isn’t far behind her move and it will take Duke and his clan to help get this taken care of.
Next Door Midlife Bear is a well-written, engaging, funny, sexy, and dangerous story that kept me glued to the pages. I had a blast here. It’s always fun to watch one main character make a major life decision turnaround… and Tricia did just that. If you love a good romance, some sizzling chemistry, and a story that will easily draw you in then this one is just right for you.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the author or author’s team via Booksprout. The opinions expressed in this review are my own -good, bad, or indifferent.*
After her aunt passes Tricia inherits a pumpkin patch and a run-down house. She packs up all her belongings and relocates. The first thing Tricia notices is the view from her new living room window, straight into the hot, ripped, and completely naked neighbor's room.
The first time Duke lays eyes on his new neighbor his inner bear wants her and lays a claim on her with or without Duke's approval. That can't be right, he already found his mate, his late wife, and mother to his three children.
Tricia has no idea just that she has stepped into a century-old feud between two swifter clans.
Can Duke keep Tricia safe, without revealing his inner beast to a human? Will Tricia and Duke both stop fighting fate and give in to their feelings?
This little cute shifter story is told in third person, which I normally have a hard time reading but this one wasn't so bad. Duke's children stole the show for me from the first time we see them. I did love how the author solved the misunderstanding between Duke and Tricia. She didn't change Tricia's mind fully. While I enjoyed this story and it was easy to get into, I found myself feeling like I was missing information. I know it's part of a series and that could be the reason why I felt that way. It felt like some things could have been explained better or more information given.
Tricia Fitzpatrick inherited an old farmhouse and pumpkin patch from her Aunt Fiona. Tricia is looking at this as a new start in her life! At 44, her life was pretty much in the dumps. There was no one special in her life and she was tired of cutting hair and listen to her clients complain. She has no idea what she is doing, but she can figure it out!
Chief Duke McMillan is Tricia’s next door neighbor. It appears he doesn’t have a curtain on the window in his bathroom and boy did Tricia get an eyeful and liked what she saw – thank you very much! When he stops by the house to introduce himself, they both like what they see! But Duke convinces himself that with three kids and his job and police chief , he doesn’t have time to date.
When they see each other again at the town adult Halloween party, the sparks definitely fly! But before anything much can come of it, Tricia is threatened by the Johnston boys that own the property behind hers. He wants her to sell to them but she refuses. Shortly afterwards, they attack her when she is out working in the field and she breaks her arm. And who should find her but Duke!
This is a really cute story about lost love and new love, and the kids are adorable!.

Tricia Fitzpatrick inherited her aunt’s old farmhouse and a pumpkin patch, and decided now was a good time to get a fresh start. One of her neighbors is Chief Duke McMillan who stops by to say hello. Both of them can feel the immediate attraction, but Duke tells himself that having three children and a busy job as police chief gives him no time for dating.
Not all of the neighbors are friendly, however, when the “Johnston boys”, Charlie, Brian, Brandon, and Caleb, want her to sell her adjoining property to Charlie and she refuses. They don’t let it go at that, however, and she is attacked and injured while working in the field. And the nightmare is still not over as a group of men came out of the woods one night, became bears as she watched from upstairs, and broke into her house. Will Duke jump in to protect her now? Will his clan come to their aid in time? And will his little secret scare Tricia off? Or, if they all survive, can she give him a chance to make her happy since she already adores his 3 kids!
This story was done so well. It made me feel the love and family that the clan showed. And it filled me with hope. Great story!
Protecting His Second Chance Mate - Duke had resigned himself to just being a single dad after he lost his children’s mother, who was his mate. Tricia wasn’t looking to get into a relationship, as she only looking to buckle down and get on with the pumpkin farm she inherited. However, there seemed to an inexplicable connection between Duke and Tricia, from the moment they met. Unfortunately, Duke was keeping a secret from Tricia, which she found out by chance when he was protecting her and this shook her to the core. Luckily, Tricia was able to come to terms with everything she learnt and this helped them grab their forever happiness.
I really enjoyed reading this action-packed romance, that had enough drama, suspense and angst, to keep me hooked on the story. It was great to read this story, that I am very happy to recommend and the preview of Corey and Tara’s story at the end of this book, has left me itching to read it. I can say without a shadow of doubt, that Meg Ripley has successfully blown my mind again.

Ripley has delivered anotherfantastic tale in the Fated Over Forty Series. Characters from the previous books make an appearance which ties the series together. You could read this as a standalone, but why would you want to?
Duke was introduced previously and it is now his turn to get a second chance at love. Tricia's first glimpse of Duke was unique and brought a smile to my face. How could things not continue from that? I adored Duke's children. They were sweet and their personalities were described so well that they cam alive on the page. Tricia had a heart of gold and was perfect for Duke. Too bad there was one thing she didn't want. Duke had some inner struggles that had to be overcome but of course things worked out how they should.
The Johnston clan rears it's ugly head which if you have read the previous books you are well aware of them and how evil they can be. Then there is the Thompson clan that gives you a real sense of community and family. With their help you can rest assured Duke and Tricia will get their HEA.

Excellent continuation to this series. Each book is a standalone with a wonderful HEA. But because the story does include other couples from the previous stories it is best to read in order. Tricia is a twin who inherits her aunts house and pumpkin patch. I love Tricia. Strong willed, feisty, yet she has a vulnerable side. Even though she does not have children and has admitted she did not want any, the way she interacted with Duke's children was fun to read. Duke is a single dad and Chief of police. He is patient and understanding with his kids. His bear recognizes Tricia . It was a joy to read how the bear and Duke learned to solve the problem Tricia. How he helps her and how she helps him.
Another great story .
well written, action packed, steamy romance, adventure and intrigue make this a great book.

Have only read one other book in this series. The pumpkin patch plot intrigued me enough to read this. Found this slow and the flow was off for me. Lost respect for Tricia when she didn’t immediately tell Duke about being threatened and attacked. He knew something was wrong and called her on it. Duke was too see-sawing in his behaviour and thinking. Instant sex with no connection and a hell of a lot of dithering along the way to somewhere. It just seemed disjointed, jumping big hurdles with no discussion. Sex, to ignoring, to being a bear, to sex, all with no discussion about some major things, such as Tricia not wanting children, Duke having three of them and his being a bear. Best part was the children. We don’t get any conclusion as to the Johnsons and their attack. Also I feel there is supposed to be more with the letters and the wonky fireplace brick. Why bring them in if they aren’t relevant? Maybe in the next book. Read through Kindle Unlimited.

Local feud is alive and kicking. Trish has inherited a pumpkin farm and the sexy Chief of Police, Duke, lives next door. They hit it off but when Trish says she has never wanted children, he steps back as he has three of his own. But when the local feud puts Trish in danger, Duke charges to the rescue. Such a wonderful story: Duke is a wonderful father and rightfully puts his children first thinking that as Trish doesn’t want children they can never be: Trish has never wanted children of her own but she can’t help liking Duke’s wonderful children. But Duke has a secret and the local feud isn’t just two battling families, it’s two battling shifter clans. I voluntarily received and reviewed an ARC copy of the book.

Each of these books follows one couple's journey to love. The characters carry over into other books, with very few typos or trigger issues.

I loved this story and I love this series. I think that the author hit it out of the park with this one. Love does not end at forty. Tricia and Duke are great characters. I enjoyed them a lot. I loved how she first sees him. A really delicious scene. I loved his children. They were cute in their interactions with the main characters. I loved how Meg wrote them. I love how the author puts cute and passion in equal measures in one book. I was really entertained and I could not put this book down until I was done with it. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booksprout and I freely left this review.
Crazy Aunt Fiona Inheritance Crazy Aunt Fiona Johnston left twins Tricia Fitzpatrick and Tara Fitzpatrick-Day her home with Pumpkin Patch and Cloud Ridge Winery, respectively. Each woman must figure out their lives. It’s real and emotional as this story focuses on Tricia and her sexy neighbor. Police Chief Duke McMillen is a widower with 3 children. The fact that his bear wants to dictate his closeness to Tricia is entertaining and romantic. The action scenes are vivid and the sexy scenes are whimsical. It is easy to enjoy this book especially when we start to wonder if Tricia will accept Duke. A great story.

Tricia moves into a ranch she has inherited and encounters her neighbor Duke. Tricia along with her twin Tara are moving boxes into the ranch house she inherited from her aunt then as she takes a breather she looks out the windoow and looks towards her nearest neighbor noticing a window with no drapes or blind pulled over it and a hunky man getting out of the shower then drying himself. She is continuing to move box when there is a knock at the door and opening the door she is shocked to sees her new neighbor, He introduces himself as Chief (Duke) McMillan the local chief of police.

Another great addition to the Fated over Forty series. This is a standalone, but does feature some characters from previous books. Loved meeting Tricia – a strong single woman who has upended her life to live and work at the pumpkin farm she inherited from her aunt. Her first glimpse of her next- door neighbour Duke is, ahem, interesting! The attraction between them is well written, as are the seeming barriers to them being together. Added to the mix is an ancient family feud which brings an edge of danger to proceedings. Thoroughly enjoyable read.

I enjoyed this story. It was interesting with heroine Tricia inheriting her aunt's farmhouse and pumpkin patch and not quite knowing what to do with it. Her neighbor, Duke, whom she's very attracted to and may have seen naked from her window into his bathroom, was drawn to her and hasn't felt a connection to anyone after losing his wife. They had great chemistry. His children were sweet. She doesn't know about shifters, and this story did have some danger.
D.C. Cole did a good job narrating this book and bringing these characters to life.
This book is awesome! The next in the Fated over Forty series and it’s police chief Duke’s story. He will meet Tricia when she moves into the farmhouse next door. I love the way their relationship develops as she learns to make her way in a new town in the house her aunt left her. I love how Duke jumps in to help Tricia whenever she needs and how the whole Thompson clan come together when she is truly in danger. Add in three wonderfully sweet children and you get a story that is well worth reading!.

When Tricia inherits her aunt's old farmhouse, the last thing she expected was to be living smack in the center of bear shifter central. When she meets her new neighbor, sparks fly. But Duke is hesitant to start anything with her as he has his kids to think about. When thugs try to force Tricia to sell her farmhouse, things take a nasty turn. Duke, unable to stand by and watch the woman he is falling for get hurt, takes a stand and promises to protect her. What happens when the thugs return? Will Duke be able to keep Tricia and his girls safe?
Meg Ripley has given us another delightful tale in the Fated Over Forty Series. In this fantastic story our introduction to Duke is during a yummy bathroom scene, which is Tricia's first glimpse of Police Chief Duke. This was so cute and unique and brought a chuckle and smile. I love that Meg includes characters from the previous books, making family ties in the the series Duke we met previously and it is now his turn to get a second chance at love with Tricia. This is an adorable read filled with cute scenes and charming characters.
