“How'd you get the burn?"
Ignoring him only got me a barrage of chatter.
"Yeah, how?"
'Did something, or someone, do it?"
"You're bleeding."
"It's her knee again."
"She opened it up."
"Did you fall?"
"You've got grass in your hair."
"Were you in a fight?"
"How'd you get grass in your hair?"
"I think she was in a fight."
"Leaves and some dirt, too. And...is that a feather?"
"You were in a fight with a bird?"
"Hey, how did you manage to knock Blake down?"
"She didn't knock me down! I caught her."
"Hah! A little girl took you out."
"Shut up or I'll take you out."
"Her extreme velocity overcame Blake's superior mass."
"I am superior."
"How'd you get moving so fast?"

I stopped abruptly and turned on them, arms gesturing wildly. "Shut up!”

“Matthias flinched, teeth grinding. "Which one of them told you?" He zeroed in on Ayden.
"One?" I said.
With a growl, Matthias pushed a button on his watch and spoke into it. "What part of 'don't tell her anything' didn't you all understand?"
A moment of silence, then Blake's voice cracked through static, "Can't-" The static sounded suspiciously like crinkling paper. "Hear-" More "static" then, "break- up.”

“I don’t know why you’re embarrassed. Sexual attraction is a key component to—"

"Ugh! Please stop talking."
"
But that’s my most attractive quality. I’m happy to communicate. "

"But half the time, no one knows what you’re saying. Including me, and I’m your brother.”

“Paris? Psh, lame. I'd take my babe on horseback through the mountains up to the falls. Then we'd have a picnic on top of the waterfalls. She'll be so overwhelmed by my romantic side that she'll swoon into my arms and-"

" Die because she ate something you made.”

“You’re telling me you’re not worried about your daughter hanging around with six boys with dubious reputations? And dating one of them who looks at your daughter with…that look?”

My brow creased. “What look?”

“Oh, please,” Aunt M scoffed. “That look. And not to mention that smile. Hungry,” she growled the word, “and hot enough to make a nun’s panties spontaneously combust.”

“As I went about my hair care routine, Logan whacked Jayden on the shoulder. “It’s bad enough you do it to us. You can’t do it to girls.”

Apparently, Jayden pulled his “surprise” bathroom visits on all the guys. Which was supposed to make me feel better. It didn’t.”

“I am at your mercy.”

Matthias cracked one of his whips. “Get up and get in the house.”

“As you wish.” Rose wrinkled his nose, picked a banana peel off his lap, and stood in the last faint beams of sunset.

“Whoa!”
“Is he wearing a leather cat suit?”
“Holy Mother!"
“Dude!”

The guys all quickly averted their eyes and raised their hands to further block any chance of catching a view. Anything to not see Rose in his painted-on leather one-piece that left absolutely nothing to the imagination. Their reactions were pure entertainment.

“Stunning, right?” Rose spread his palms as far as the cuffs would allow.

“Oh, I’m stunned.” Ayden looked ill. Rose looked down at himself with admiration. “Not many males can pull off this look.” “No male can pull off that look.”

“Actually, his finely sculptured physique would be considered the perfect complement for this type of anatomically revealing attire which accentuates his—”

“Bloody hell, Jayden, shut it!”
“Dude, this is so not right.”
“I feel like it’s looking at me.”
“Feel like what’s looking at—? Oh. Oh! Ugh, now I feel like it’s looking at me too.”
“How can it be looking at both of us?”
“Are you serious?”
“I’m gonna be sick.”
“Someone please gouge out my eyes.”
“He might as well be naked.”

“Already did that,” Rose said dryly and gave me a suggestive wink. “Ask Aurora.”

“What!” Now the crowd had eyes on me. I frantically shook my head.

“No, no, no. It’s not what you think. He was in the water with most,” my hands circled over my abdomen, “stuff covered.”

“Most?” Ayden almost shrieked. The orange-red flames on his arms flashed blue-white.”

“Matthias swept his arms forward expecting to launch every shadow in the room into an attack that would demolish the statue. Blake slammed the ground with his palms and twisted like he could blast the table sky-high and shatter it into mere wood chips. Logan swirled his arms as if mixing a volatile vortex to tornado the threat into oblivion. Tristan squashed his head in hands, eyes hard in concentration trying to will Ayden into moving. Jayden snapped empty hands out to create a tidal wave that would annihilate all in its path to save his brother. But it was all wishful thinking because nothing happened.”

“I smirked. “Careful, Aussie, that almost sounded like a compliment.”

I reached to take the knife, but Matthias caught my wrist, reeled back his arm, and stabbed the blade into my hand. I screamed. The Aussie laughed. Okay, it was only a prick. On my finger. But his serial-killer plunge and deranged look of delight got my heart pumping.”

“That’s how babies are made!”

I reeled back and knocked over a chair. “Aunt M!”

“Sex kills!”

“M, seriously.” Mom walked into the kitchen and rolled her eyes.

My aunt patted her belly. “It killed my waistline.”

“Now, what’s this we hear about some shenanigans you’ve been up to?”

“Sorry,” Tristan said sheepishly. “I know I messed up.”

“Are you kidding?” his grandma broke out a huge smile. “This is the first dangerous thing you’ve done!”
“We’re so proud of you!” His grandpa clapped him on the back.

“What?” Logan’s mom snapped.

Tristan’s grandma shot her a look. “Don’t question our parenting style.”

“She was in hell.” Logan grabbed Blake’s hand, planted a foot against the giant’s thigh and heaved back. “We need to make sure she’s okay.”

“Nah-uh.” Blake shoved Logan off. “The record shows babe’s only safe in my arms.”

“Don’t be preposterous.”

“She’s plenty safe in mine,” Ayden said.

“You could burn her to ashes,” Tristan pointed out.

Matthias smirked, “I wouldn’t complain.”

“Because you’d be crying,” I said.

“Completely lost without me.”

“Oh, please.”

“I would be!” Blake said.

Let her go!” Logan hopped up behind Blake and got him in a headlock.

“Has anyone ever mentioned that you bicker like old women?” Eros asked.

“Sixty-seven times,” Jayden said.”

“Don’t try to pin this on me!”

“The lonely lone wolf didn’t deny he loved Aurora.” Blake chuckled and dodged out of the Aussie’s swack.

“Ugh.” Ayden walked beside me and put a hand around my waist. “Now I have to compete for your affection with both Blake and Matthias.”

I rolled a dramatic shrug. “I tried to put him down easy, but he’s so infatuated. It’s embarrassing. Even with all those other girls after him.”

“I can’t bloody stand you!”

“You knew he was here?” I said.

“Sure,” Matthias said. “One of the times I checked on you during the night, he was in your bed. Thought it was Ayden at first, but who am I to judge? Except for their poor choice in women.”

“Blake jumped down and swept me into his arms. “Damsel rescued,” he winked.

“I needed the rescue!” Tristan limped past rubble, an arm around Heather who was gagging over the twitching demon carcasses.

“Another damsel!” Blake cradled me in one arm and opened the other to Heather. “There’s room for you too, gorgeous.”

“What about me?!” Tristan snapped.

“Dude, you’re cute, but not my type.”

“Logan studied him for a moment. “What exactly is your power?”

“Staying alive,” Cristiano answered.

“You’d better be sure she does,” Ayden said. “Stay alive, that is, because if anything happens to her, Sicarius or not, I’m coming for you.”

After a beat, Matthias added, “And he won’t be alone.”

“Ahhh,” I smiled. “I knew you cared.”

Matthias groaned. “Why do you ruin everything?”

“Part of my charm.”

“I have been protecting you, and yet you still begrudge sharing your trust. Tell me, why did you trust the Hex Boys?”

“I didn’t,” I snorted. “At first I thought they were—”

“—trying to kill you? Then there is hope for me.”
