“The church is constituted as a new people who have been gathered from the nations to remind the world that we are in fact one people. Gathering, therefore, is an eschatological act as it is the foretaste of the unity of the communion of the saints.”

“A half-open window.
Morning-fresh air carries
curious sunlight into a bedroom.
Flecks of dust shimmer yellow-gold.
Four feet, entwined under white sheets.
Joni's Blue, on the player.
Delicate curtains slow-dance
to Sunday's tune.
Laughter.
Talk of: what for breakfast?
Anything. Anything at all.”

“JASON: 'Intended wings.' How depressing.
MICHAEL: Yes. Makes them into suicides, really, the pigeons.
JASON: No - no, it doesn't. It could mean the wings were 'intended' to carry them upwards, out of the darkness, but they were defective in some way, these wings, so the pigeons aren't suicidal, not at all, just badly equipped for flying. Like the rest of us.”

“How necessary Sundays have become. I reach for them like sleeping lovers on the other side of my earth or my mattress.”

“...to pick up an old-fashioned newspaper, ink barely dry, staining my fingers in that beautiful hue of grey that is messy and decadent at the same time. I lick to get to the Food section and the Arts and Entertainment section, my greedy little fingers wrapped around both the awkward pages of the dying art and my coffee mug as I curl into what I deem relaxation.”

“A thousand church visits won't make you holy, if you remain indifferent to the agonies of the people.”

“The Sunday morning choir raised their voices to fever pitch with another gospel tune. Slurring voices filled with thick drawls of the local accent. The choir a mix of young girls her own age, alongside elderly women, with a few men thrown in for good measure. The old ladies wore tight gray buns and librarian glasses. Could they have ever been young? Could their husbands have?”

“Aftershock by Stewart Stafford
Sitting by myself at the firepit,
The dregs of last night's inferno,
Still charcoal from vibrant flame,
Charred bones of the festivities.
Dropped food and empty bottles,
A littering ring, now seen in light,
The laughs and drunken banter,
Distant echoes that bring smiles.
Head throbs, chill morning breeze,
Take two pills and zip up my jacket,
Post-party blues gripping onto me,
Happiness, revisit on swiftest wings!

“Stormy Sunday by Stewart Stafford
Coffee offsets the stormy Sunday,
Thundery fingers scratch the drum,
The coal-black sky stares unamused,
A dim rainbow stripe upon its back.
The understudy sun punches through,
Slamming into a house's white gable,
Blinding against the dark backdrop,
The shushing showers rage angrier.
Liquid beading on the window pane,
Translucent insects marching slipshod,
Weather duellists go back and forth,
A primal rolling flux rumbling on.

“May this day open like a quiet flower inside you, blooming not because the world demands it, but because your spirit finally has room to stretch.”
