He is still loyal to ideals, like first to Vietnam. Like Card's "Ender's Game", enemies are Bugs, aliens we know nothing about. I compared with Bowe as below. War is hell for all sides. Canada still loses humans.
Bowe's The Ground You Stand Upon", a Vietnam War recollection based on his dad's letters home, sounds just like that author's dad unknown at 20, "just a kid". https://www.goodreads.com/review/edit......more

The hero may seem meek mild and caring for innocent smelly goblins "people too". But past horror, young and foolish days, catch up to him. Especially when a local Witch and a Master know your story....more

Overlords kept mysteries even past the closing pages. All faiths narrowed to a single OverMind. Was this meant to be optimistic? Then why am I frowning?
Obviously George and Jean are important. Turns kind of creepy, on the edge of horror. The clues are there, minds communicate. Although the flow was believable, surprises kept sneaking up. ...more

Campbell fortifies the formula of toothed enemy against poor us, that snowballs into harder fights. EJust good people trying to do right can be heroes
Campbell fortifies the formula of toothed enemy against poor us, that snowballs into harder fights. Earth and Old Colonies scrub expensive forces they cannot afford to protect New Colonies, who foolishly still expect help.
Aboard ship, tough former Marine Mele stands behind charismatic Lochan to oppose danger, slavers. At the end of the line Glenlyon, they team with Navy Lt Rob Geary, super-hacker Ninja, senior expert in Earth law Carmen. Leigh of the planet Council relies on their expertise, defends them when the Council we recognize as normal politicians, disregards their hard work.
Campbell builds their confidence with each triumph. If readers can identify with gutless, jobless at the start, we easily get caught up in tribulations, most caused by greedy humans on Scatha. I even felt bad for enemy soldiers blown up, while nobody harms their families, innocent civilians. Humane morals, laughs amid destructive conflicts, attributable to Campbell, send me for more of his work.

Rollins uses lots of real stuff. People: Shepherd, events: massacres of pygmies, others. Virus World Theory is repeated unnecessarily p 186, that viruses could have started life on Earth, or in depth over-my-head. End notes are the better place to explain more, such as giant viruses, their mysteries.
Gray just knows the answer is forward, so on they go, led by bits of shaman lore from apprentice Farajie, clues and compass. Thoroughly shameless enemy CEO, Belgian in Africa, carelessly spread virus, now scrambles to find cure, trying to erase Sigma Force and others working with "history" such as real Shepherd, turned supernatural. "She" Gaia, Nature gives out dark vibes because people destroy the planet, so they deserve destruction in return. I forgot how Sigma goes supernatural. Fantasy shelf. And Scifi for real sci stuff stretched.
Charlotte is Super-Nurse, endangers others. Granted she's sick, debilitated. But her save-all obsession Patients-First goes too far. When a hut full are almost dead, most are shot. We are oh-so-sad for tiny baby, oh-so-cute. Even when oh-so-sick? Maybe on a screen or color photo, not b & w page. Biologist Benjie works to overcome autism and pulls his weight on the team, helping researcher Frank, then Commander Gray, get closer to a cure.
Mostly bad guys get shot: blood, screams. Miners, families get bombed PSHHK! Guess who in red shirts, dies? Tucker and faithful dog Kane, both injured in Afghanistan? Ndaye, native helicopter who helped rescue good guys in a jam?
I had a Cancer shelf because my reading all had characters with fatal Stage 4. Handy plot device, makes person single available, so they can move away, or must stay at work to pay for new treatments. Here Kowalski sleeps a lot, gets sympathetic glances from boss Gray because the big guy got radioactive saving loads of people in another book. Get it! Buy it! Read it! Now! I took the C-shelf off, because the number was too high and hard to remember. Kind of a fun distraction to scan others' shelf names for color, imagination.

MB (MurderBot) is such a complex full with gaps personality. She cares about people who care about her, but doesn't understand all the subtleties, like a person who can't recognize emotions from facial expressions. Her addiction to soap-opera style vids is like most cultures today.
She expresses loyalty by aggressively putting down all threats. Physically talented in defensive and attacking abilities. Set in space adds spice. I would be glad to have her on my side. Hold my hand, girl, and let's go....more

Doomed by centuries gap, one will die first. Unless human ingenuity or Joe's imagination can prevail.
Joe creates a feeling of distance faraway warriors must have felt. Maybe his Vietnam books come on my next pile. Did enemy copy American weapons, tactics. Or be the underground guerrillas I heard of. War stuff I've read has more on horror of trenches, thrills of shared action, incompetence and corruption to deliver right supplies.
Joe does a fair job of imagining future, nearest is all homo "home". Our 2023 is step farther: m, f, neither. We have internet google, cloud memories, mobiles that dominate us. His "Man" shares memories via computer backup for knowledge base.
Joe and soldier Will both love physics, so the pages of play, time dilation so they return to a different culture, language. My eyes glaze, like Will's students, "I just try to keep awake"- preview....more

His new blue-collar boss Rathdowne "I got here because I work damn hard!" is also put down by "entitled" men in "raging class conflict". Needing allies, Wolfe befriends elevator boy Pete over the Beatles. ...more
