So I was glad to be able to read a new serie from him. I have to say I quite enjoy this new world, but at the same time I didn't fall in love with the story like his other book. The pace of this book often felt like a rollercoaster to me. It usually went from being slow to picking up and then going back in a slow format, over and over again. This rollercoaster lasted the whole book for me. Yet it still manage to keep me entertain throught all those pages, even thought at times it felt a bit like a chore.
The plot was good enough to be interresting, but it often came out bland. I didn't feel any emotion by anything that happen and no twist manage to really surprise me. As for the character, I can said that for the first time in a long time, not one character manage to connect to me. To be honest, I found most of them to be selfish, especially the father and his son. As for the women character I found them lackluster. Still I kind of love Cassandra. I the start of the book I kind enjoy the Jacob character, yet as the story progress I started to kind of loathe him. The only good thing about his character is the story connected to him was better than to the other part. Ducan is the only character that I found manage to really change and I'm curious where he's going.
I do have to said that it feels good to read a story about a father and his son as main character. Changes from what I'm reading.
Even tought it's not the best book I have read from him, I can't wait to see what the sequel will bring....more

I was presently surprise by how much I enjoy this light adventure. I think what I enjoy the most about the first book in this serie is how lght and fun this new adventure. The only thing I'm not crazy with this book is the way I found the book ended kind of abrutly. The other small thing that bug me is the name she use to call her character. I hated the main character's name which meant most of the time she got shorten to Sophie in my mind.
Can't wait to pick up the second part of the new serie....more

I might not have the same kind of problem, but I love the way the author goes about learning all this information. One day I might get there, but it will be one step at a time....more

Took me more than two week to finish, which prove my waning interest. It started well enough, yet never fast enough for me. It seems to pick up speed once in awhile, but then it would slow down to a crawl space. The only reason why I didn’t stop reading this book, the story kept me captivating. The mystery was good enough without being too complex to throw me off.
Love the intermix of magic with the Victorian time and element of steampunk. Found the description of that time interesting and well-done, making me feel it was happening during the Victorian time. One thing I found hard to follow was how much time passed during this whole thing. If it wasn’t for the date at the beginning of some chapters, I would have been lost.
Character wise, none of them really stood out for me. I didn’t connect with any of them, more than that. Evelina is good enough, strong and well determined. Let’s hope she doesn’t regress in the later book. Imogen her friend, I like her for being herself and finding strength in her weakness. I quite enjoy her relationship development with Bucky and hope to continue to see them together. They fit well together and feel natural compared to the other. Tobias is the image of what a rich spoil kid wanting his father's attention looks like. I can see some changes in him by the end of the book, but I still don’t know where he is heading. Magnus for me was just a disgusting man, and the steam baron where no better. Nick meanwhile I find didn’t have a lot of personality and what he did was the complete different from Tobias. I guess the perfect combination for a romantic triangle. (Still don’t like those point in any books.)
I have book 2 and 3 that will soon follow and I am hoping that the story does pick up a bit more. ...more
