So, at first I was a bit disappointed, because I lovedWe Hunt the Flame. But that changed in the end.
The story felt a bit simple. I was still really enjoying it. I was fascinated by the world and the characters. But it just felt like a watered down version of Six of Crows. It is set in a fantasy world, but it is basically a pseudo-Britain during the time of the colonization of India and Sri Lanka. The story is told in multiple POVs but the main character is Arthie. A brown skinned girl who moved to “Britain” after her parents were killed by colonizers, and opened a tea shop that is secretly a blood lounge for vampires at night. She has a whole gang and Arthie is very much the Kaz of this story. Terrifying and untouchable.
When authorities are threatening to shut down her tea shop for their suspected blood activities, she plots a scheme to steal secrets from the ruler in order to blackmail him. She gathers a team that includes Jin, her adopted brother and partner in crime; Laith, a former assassin who is now a palace guard and has his own stakes in the game; Matteo, a vampire artist who… I’m not really sure why he was involved but I liked him; and Felicity aka Flick, a noble lady who is also a master forger.
There is a bit of a love-triangle between Arthie, Laith, and Matteo. She definitely had more going on with Laith but things were not left in a good place. And I much preferred Matteo.
For the first 3/4 of the book things were pretty straight forward and progress how you would expect a YA fantasy heist novel to progress. But in the last quarter of the book shit hit the fan! I did see the first twist coming, it was pretty obvious. (view spoiler)[That Arthie is a half-vampire. (hide spoiler)] But then we just kept getting hit with one thing after another! And were left with a cliffhanger! So now I really need to read book 2 ! The book really hooked me in the end!...more

I did not want to DNF another book because I’ve already DNF a few this month. I tried to force my way through this, but at 53% I just cannot stand Vanya anymore. She is terrible! I know some people do not mind when the MC is an unlikable person. But I just hate her so much! And I do not see how there could be a romance in this. I do not want to see her with Emerick. She does not deserve him.
I see a lot of reviews that are comparing this to Six of Crows. But I don’t think that is a fair comparison. This is nowhere near as good as Six of Crows. And they are not that similar. They are just both fantasy with thieves. As far as the story goes, this reminds me very, very much of Spinning Silver. And as for the feel and the mood of the book, this reminds me a bit of Sword Catcher....more

It’s a little band of men on a mission to steal a priceless jewel. In the end there is a revelation about the identity of one of the characters that I didn’t see coming. I enjoyed Gen. I love his arrogance despite his position. I also enjoyed Sophos and the Magus. Nothing special really happened. I would probably not continue the series but it is hugely popular and the rating of consecutive books seem to go up, so I’ll try book 2 and see....more

This was very similar to the movie although some events were rearranged and the ending was different, but still good. This is so emotional and I teared up a few times. I love Blackheart!...more

Within 10 pages I was like, omg this kid is going to kill my maternal heart! I just wanted to hug him so bad! The best part was the characters and the relationship between Yadriel and Julian. I loved how it was so subtle and sweet. Neither of them really said anything about how they felt but they knew anyway. Just beautiful. Although I have trouble buying that they were only 15. I wish they had been older.
I also personally prefer more intense stories with more action. A lot of this was just them walking around the city, until the end. Of course I saw the twist coming MILES AND MILES away. But it was a great scene to see Yadriel prove himself....more
