First off, when I picked this book up at the store and read the first few pages, I was intrigued and bought it. It wasn’t until I plucked it out of my pile of want-to-read books that I looked at the cover and realized that it was a continuation of the first book Chocolat! Since I hadn’t remembered the movie I watched in 2001 was from a book, I was doubly surprised.
Secondly, the depiction of the characters in the movie is nothing like the book. That was frustrating. I was picturing the movie characters as I read but their hair texture and color was completely different and it does actually matter to the storyline.
But I did really love the descriptions of frustration of a mother when her daughter is getting older and doesn’t seem to need her anymore. That completely hit home. And the descriptions of telling your heart what is good for it rather than just feeling however one feels. I also liked that the book jumps from the viewpoint of the female characters.
