The anti blackness was running wild and rampant in the story. The main character Jasmyn was so judgmental over the other Black women who wore their hair a certain way. Then she got upset when one of the characters didn’t want to watch a video of a Black man getting killed by a police officer. As a Black woman I can no longer watch those videos either. After watching Eric Garner being killed here on Staten Island where I live that was final straw for me. Surprise, surprise the cop was found not guilty. ...more

I was really excited to read this book and it just all fell apart for me. The beginning started off strong and then Cassie's inner dialogue became extremely repetitive and annoying. Also the back and forth and cringey exchanges between Cassie and Aidan was too much. The spice wasn't bad, but its not enough for me to get through 400 pages. ...more

Full disclosure I stopped at page 174.
I’ve heard good things about They Wish They Were Us and this is why I wanted to read this book.
I struggled big time with this book. Even though I’m an adult I do appreciate a good young adult novel and this story just didn’t work out for me. I had a hard a time getting into the story and found myself losing focus on the story while reading.
I also felt that Ellie and Stella pretty much had the same personality. I’m not sure if it was meant to be that way since they are sisters, but sisters do have differences.
Since I didn’t want to give up hope on this story I borrowed the audiobook from the library and that still couldn’t hold my attention. I ended up skipping to the back of the book to see who the killer was and the reasoning and I found that to be a lackluster ending.

The Other Black Girl was one of my most anticipated reads of the summer and it pains me that it was Thank you Atria books for my advance review copy.
The Other Black Girl was one of my most anticipated reads of the summer and it pains me that it was a DNF for me. I struggled big time with Nella and her insecurities when it comes to White people. I know very well what it’s like to be the only Black woman in an all white work environment. Some days I left shaking my head, but I never felt inferior to them because of my skin color.
Nella also struggled with her blackness as she grew up in a predominantly white area and had mostly white friendships. I grew up with a diverse group of friends so that was another area that I struggled with as well. This book definitely shows that all Black experiences aren’t the same.
I felt the plot was extremely slow going. At 113 pages in and I’m bored and struggling to read which means it a sign for me to abort this mission. *sighs*
ETA: I heard that the audiobook was better so I gave it a shot as I really wanted to finish this book. The audiobook experience was better, but the story still didn’t grab my attention until the last few chapters. That ending was different which I wasn’t expecting. Also I wouldn’t call this book a thriller it reads like a Black horror story....more

Maybe throw a skinhead in there, just to make it less racist.”
Why must we go this route? Seriously why does it always have to be Black men doing stuff like this? So annoying and frustrating. This author can’t help, but be slightly offensive in their stories. I had such high hopes for this book and after reading this part I’m done. ...more
