First time reading this author and it wasn't a bad read. The beginning of the story had me hooked, bu the middle dragged and dragged and I found myself losing interest. The last half of the book really came together and overall I was satisfied how it ended. This would make a great read during spooky season especially if you're a fan of the 90's and the Craft!...more

I was expecting this story to be spooky and creepy, but that was so not the case. This book dealt with family traumas, coming of age and the spirits played a minor part in the story. As far as the writing goes I did enjoy it and found the pacing to be good as well.

After reading and enjoying The Lavender House, I couldn’t wait to catch up with Andy. I really enjoyed getting more of a backstory when it came to Andy and especially his past ties in the Navy as well. The mystery aspect of the story definitely took me my surprise with twists and turns! I legit gasped at one point while reading. Also the person who I thought was behind it all was actually innocent and that was very refreshing. As always I love the theme of found family, community and a sense of belonging. I can’t wait for the next book in this series!...more

As much as I wanted to love this book it didn’t work out in my favor at all. I found the story to be slow and the ending wasn’t fulfilling. I paired this story with the audio and that’s pretty much the only reason I was able to complete this book. I have heard great things about Burn Down, Rise Up also by this author and I do want to check it out as well. ...more

I really liked Charity, but I did find myself yelling at her to forget about closing down the camp and just leave!!!!! Mr. Lamont will be just fine and if not he can deal. My theory about one of the characters was correct, then they had to go and mess it up!!! I was rooting for you!!! Ugh. The ending definitely took me by surprise and I loved how the book ended in true horror movie fashion!!! This would be a great read for spooky season!! ...more

There were some funny moments as well to balance out the heaviness at times. Noelle & Miriam are such opposites, but it works and I enjoyed how their relationship progressed. So I took a break and restarted it a few weeks later and I ended up really enjoying this story. I did call the killer, but the motive caught me by surprise. I loved the theme of found family and how they looked out and protected each other in this story.
What can I say about Andy? His character really grew on me and I loved his character growth throughout the story. He did a lot of self reflection which isn’t always easy, but I’m glad he did. Since I did end up enjoying the story, Dennis will hold this over my head for the rest of my life. Pray for me y’all....more

When I first started this book I wasn’t in the right mind frame. So I waited a few months to read and ended up really enjoying the story. Ray and Elvin had great chemistry and banter. They were so the opposite of each other, but it worked.
I also felt bad for Ray at the end and felt he got such a raw end of the deal when it came to the secondary storyline. I also would have liked an extended epilogue.

I was all excited to read this Black joy story and it didn’t work out exactly in my favor as I hoped it would. I wanted a carefree story, but both of the main characters are dealing with some heavy issues. Then there were several incidents of racism and can we not in these Black joy books? I deal with that a lot in my everyday life. I just want to read a book about Black people at our best! No heavy themes, topics. Just carefree living life Black people. Not asking for too much.
Back to the book. There were some fun moments along the way. I do like the way the main characters were able to talk to their parents and have open dialogue at the end. I loved that this book focused on the importance of friendship and how platonic love doesn’t necessarily lead to romance which is a good thing. The story also had good diverse side characters as well which helped the story progress.
CW: Abandonment, mental health issues, incidents of racism.

What I liked: Several laugh out loud moments. Second chance romance. Fake dating. Sibling rivalry. Divya was the best kind of friend you could have! Kept it 100 the whole time.
Issues: I wanted more insight as to why Hudson and Kian broke up. It would have been nice to have glimpses of them as a couple in the past. I wanted more groveling from Hudson.
Triggers: Mentions of racism, classism, alcoholism and homophobia....more
