read this for school. the story is very fablelike and the representation of North Africa was authentic and not incredibly stereotypical. This book was sort of comforting in it's predictability and it's use of the universal archetype, but it also felt like a story my parents would tell me. The moral of the story is always relevant even today. Santiago went through some major character development from racist lil boy to wise man listening to the soul of the world. the book was written in an almost holy way, using the same style(??) as the holy texts of major religions (to me it was written similarly to the English translation of the Quran) however it was kinda repititive and the alchemist isn't really all that, he prob needed more personality. FATIMA IS AMAZING I LOVE HER even though her characterization was quite stereotypical of Muslim women but she was bossing in her own way. all in all, not the worst school assigned reading I've had to do....more

The start was actually good but it all went downhill when Jane became a governess. so yeah thats it tbh. I WILL SAY that I do like Janes chararacter though....more
