The surface plot is about the search for a woman lost on the Appalachian Trail, but deeper, it is the story of three women, connected by a love of nature and by difficult childhoods and mother-daughter relationships.
Beautifully written, it is also difficult to put down, so invested is the reader in finding out if the lost hiker is found.

It is a slow burn mystery about a woman whose husband goes missing on a family camping trip. Little by little, details are added to the story that changes the reader’s perception of the events surrounding the disappearance. I think the folks who disliked this book were perhaps misled by the thriller category in which it was placed. It doesn’t invoke gasps or omygods but more, hmmms….., which is a welcome respite from books trying their hardest to shock readers with their crazy twists. Nicely written, too (except for that moment, early in the story where “gate” was used instead of the proper “gait”, which put me off almost enough to taint the rest of the book).
I will definitely keep my eye out for Ms. miller’s next offering. ...more
