It would cost me about $17 to continue reading this series. I just bought Nora Roberts’ latest hardcover for $11. So…no thank you.

That said, while this free first installment was mostly well-written, if noisy with other characters, it’s not good enough to want to continue - despite the cost. There is more marriage falling apart than romance and starting over with the new guy. And he’s written a bit wishy washy at that.
If this book has been tightened up into one novel instead of a greedy five, with all the extraneous and filler edited out it would probably have closer to five stars. I would have given it that high a ranking. Just read the reviews going forward and it’s clear that this is thesaurus central. Dickens got paid by the word. But he didn’t have a great deal of competition.
The renovation is interesting but I’m here for the romance. And this was not delivered at all. Even the meet cute with the coffee explosion was washed out by her embarrassment. This is a professional woman in a high powered career - she would have handled that with far more grace. And apologized to him again. She doesn’t, even when her jokingly refers to it after several meetings. It was just uneven characterization. But yeah lots of renovation research was done. I kept expecting that house to slide off into the Pacific, honestly. They get it fixed but then it’s not fixed in subsequent books? Give me a break. And my wallet a break. And edit the story for the betterment of everyone....more

I have a lot of highlights of mostly well crafted sentences. Two people come together after knowing each other across the desk of the high school newspaper. Such well developed characters. My only complaint is that it ended with 70 or so pages left in the book (a full 15%!), which I thought would belong to Drake and Marly. Alas it was an advertisement for the next series installment....more

As a CEO, he would’ve made that amount in 2-3 years. Not to mention only retaining 2% of future value. Sorry, I just couldn’t get past that to enjoy the rest of the book. Very short. Just sort of average. Hilarious that a woman in her late 20s is described as having sagging breasts. Sure. Eyeroll....more
