A nice complement to Helen Castor's The Eagle and the Hart: The Tragedy of Richard II and Henry IV. Castor was unable to go much in depth about how Henry IV justified his usurpation of Richard II's throne; Mortimer more than makes up for that lack.
This was a fine, moderately enjoyable read but the satire was hit or miss. While I particularly liked Ibrahim, the naive imam whose life i5 out of 10.

I came across Dorothea Tanning's name (& some examples of her work) while looking through my book on Remedios Varo, the Surrealist artist, and indulged a desire to learn more about her (to my profit).
As with my recent review of Dorothea Tanning, I was more interested in looking at the artwork rather than learning anythin7 out of 10 for the artwork.

However, I did enjoy Lempicka's style, and she's become a new artist on my "like" list....more

God's Traitors is a narrative history of the plight of English Catholics under Elizabeth I into the early years of James I's reign (specifically the Gunpowder Plot of 1605).
Childs anchors her the story on the Vaux family, staunch Catholics who were critical in supporting the Jesuit and other missions sent by the Catholic powers to both succor recusant families and work toward restoring England to the Roman Church's fold.
Childs gets pretty deep into the weeds so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who didn't have a solid interest in the period but she does an excellent job of recreating the complex world of those first decades after Henry broke with Rome....more
