In real life, she wouldn't be a virgin at the age of 22 and both men would have slept with her already. When she loser her virginity, It's somewhat of a menage a trois. Really? I'm not even discussing other events that took place. It's all bad.
She never took a job, nor did her mother. Her mother didn't learn from her experiences and build a career for herself. I wouldn't be surprised if Christopher buys all her paintings. She still calls her father daddy. She wants to donate money for a something that might not even occur. It's not a likeable character to me.

Jaden rebels against Darren even more. It's frustrating knowing she doesn't have an actual plan nor point to it. She sees herself as a smart and physically strong person. In reality she's not. She can fight, but she's no match for Darren. In the first book I respected her. That slowly changes throughout the series. That's o.k. though. I'm still entertained....more

Darren bought Jaden for $3.000.000. It didn't make sense when a slaveowner buys his own abducted slave. Darren says:" you don't fully own something without purchasing it first".
That puzzled me. So Darren wants to claim the title and rights that come with ownership in a legal sense. Which is impossible. In that logic, you can't sell what you don't own. You can't claim the title of ownership of something you can't legally own. The money you make by selling slaves isn't yours either. The law isn't a factor in this story. If rivalling gangs stole her away from him so to speak, they would make sure she wouldn't be seen in public ever again. It would've been better storywise if he didn't put her up for auction at all.
Jaden's defiance becomes annoying at a certain point. Darren then reminds her of his previous threats to hurt her beloved ones or throw her in a cage, and she backs down. I didn't believe she's a smart person. Darren also has a soft spot which he sometimes shows.
What works for me:

Dissapointments: A guy describing what women wear in detail isn't normal. Constantly shredding all kinds of clothing to pieces is plain stupid. Stefano seems to be too much of an ideal man. Some aspects of Stefano are contradicting. I prefer flawed characters. This is just a bit soft for me. He doesn't last long in the bedroom. If we're going to use our imagination, why not juice that part up? Their sudden relationship from casual to boyfriend/girlfriend didn't make any sense. I could predict what would happen with her dad from the start. The end resembled a fairytale. I'm not reading something from the kidssection so that ruined it for me....more

I had to re-read a small part to understand she had intercourse with Alec at a young age because of how it was described.
I wanted to take my time reading the book. It's such a sad but beautiful story.
Angel tells Tess about his transgressions yet cannot forgive his wife for doing the same thing. Within weeks he ditches his wife and wants to bring Izzy with him to Brasil, only for a year without marrying Izzy. To live in sin without the community being aware of it. All the while claiming to be honorable he's just looking for any woman to fulfill his needs. He asks Izzy who loves him the most. His feelings towards the women obviously don't matter. When Tess supposedly loves him more, he tells Izzy to forget the whole thing. In my opinion Angel doesn't know what love is. Perhaps that's a result of his upbringing by parents who in that time didn't spend a lot of time parenting. He comes across as arrogant and clueless.
Alec confuses love with lust. Both men aren't any good for her. But this took place in a different time so it's easy to judge today....more

It pains me that back then and still now in some places of the world a child can't communicate with his or her guardians. There wasn't a lot of attention being paid at what troubled children. Atleast not in the way I'm used to seeing now. There was no actual recovery from the rape because it was swepped under the rug. The child blames itself. From being brought up by their parents, going back and forth to a relative, expecting the children to just go with the flow.
It's not easy to read how people of color were being treated. I sometimes think about the lynches, being beaten, called names, seperate entries and bathrooms. How being in constant fear of your life must have been simply being surrounded by people with a different skin color.
It's important for future generations to read books like this. The first half I could hardly put my book down. The second half kind of fast forwards into the teen years where you can skip here and there. Some parts about what happens at school, church or a funeral didn't really seem important to the story. I would prefer to learn more about their day to day struggles. That's why I'm giving it three stars....more

I expected more after reading the reviews. The selfevaluation is somewhat short compared to the story of his life. Death itself wasn't profoundly described as I had hoped for. The realisation that he was really sick which was downplayed by the people who surrounded him made more of an impression on me. How alone he was while being surrounded by family and staff....more
