Paula Hawkins who took the literary world by storm, with her first murder mystery sensation, The Girl on the Train, which of course came to sell approximately 20 million copies and a major motion picture (loved) starring Emily Blunt, returns with the highly anticipated INTO THE WATER —a twisty, complex, bold, and ambitious follow-up, which may be even better! Whereas, The Girl on the Train involved more of a murder mystery centered around three perspectives, a commuter train, alcoholism, infidelity, and cozy suburban homes; INTO THE WATER, is centered around a village of people from multi-generations of women, men, teens, and those spirits which have passed on. From multiple perspectives (a dozen or so), critical to the atmospheric, Gothic, dark crime noir contemporary suspense tale—leading to the shocking climax. The “last four words” will leave you holding your breath. You are assured to re-read them again and again. It is worth the journey, so sit back and enjoy the ride. “Beckford is not a suicide spot. Beckford is a place to get rid of troublesome women.” Murky waters hide dark secrets. INTO THE WATER is a mix of historical fiction, psychological, paranormal, and Gothic, taking us back to over 300 years of murders, suicides, and suspicious deaths of local girls and women in the area. Some women were called witches. Beginning in 1679, when the first woman was forced into the water under suspicion of witchcraft, and to the present day with the suspected mysterious "suicide" of Danielle "Nel" Abbott, an obsessive journalist and photographer who dedicated her life to raising her daughter, Lena and her work. Especially the truth about The Drowning Pool. A book of childhood memories. What we learn and hear as a child may not always be the reality. People will try and protect, they will spin a story to suit their own needs. The truth may not ever be clear. We may think a certain way; however, we may learn too late, the story was not as it appeared. What is the truth? Never assume you have all the facts. Memories of childhood stories we tell about our lives. We recall a situation and may have a clear memory of it and then discover something that is completely false or the interpretation may be different – things which shaped our lives and made us the people we are today. What if we were wrong? “We now know that memories are not fixed or frozen, like Proust’s jars of preserves in a larder, but are transformed, disassembled, reassembled, and recategorized with every act of relocation. – Oliver Sacks, Hallucinations Can guided imagery instructions increase the likelihood of false memory creation and of remembering previously unremembered true events? First, let me start out by saying a few words which hopefully will have some impact on your reading experience. Do not make comparisons. INTO THE WATER is a totally different book than Hawkins' first. It is strong enough to stand on its own merits. I discovered through an online interview - the author was working on this idea before The Girl on the Train and continued to work on it even during the first book promotion. As you can only imagine the pressure and scrutiny involved when you now have a built-in audience, expectations, publishers, editors, movie critics, and fans to please. Not her first rodeo. I commend the author, which could have taken the lazy approach and rested on her first success. Hawkins, after all, is the highest paid author in the world. She had nothing when she began. Instead, she creates a complex and highly absorbing story which had to be a “bear” to write with all the many perspectives and timelines. However, she pulled it off like a rock-star! Hawkins mentioned in her interviews, she wanted to provide readers a totally unique experience. In my opinion, she exceeded her goal. INTO THE WATER is complex and when you read it, you will understand. This is much more than a who-dun-it. It is a why-dun-it and how-dun-it? At the center of the story is The Drowning Pool. The crime novel is set in Beckford, a gloomy dark historic fictional village town overlooking the river where an unprecedented number of women have drowned or ended their lives. You can feel the darkness and black cloud. These women were brought to the water (forced), suffered, or accused of witchcraft to see if they would sink or swim. Some thought it was a place of horror. For some, a place to cover up their crimes (to bury their secrets). Two of the latest apparent suicides is the single mother Nel Abbott who has been investigating the history of these women for a story and a young teenage girl, Kate. Lena is Nel’s daughter and Kate’s best friend, so she has lost two people very close to her. Did they jump or were they pushed? Not only these two but all the ones from ages past. The lives of the women who went to the Beckford Drowning Pool. A place that over centuries has claimed the lives of Libby Seeton, Mary Marsh, Anne Ward, Ginny Thomas, Lauren Slater, Katie Whittaker, and more- countless others, nameless and faceless. Why and how? Some would rather hush, suppress, silence. Nel wanted this memoir of her life and the Beckford pool starting with the swimming of witches. Some say the women left something of themselves in the water; some say it retains some of their power, for ever since then it has drawn to its shores the unlucky, the desperate, the unhappy, the lost. They come here to swim with their sisters. Another key character is Jules. Jules Abbott is the sister of Nell. They are estranged. They grew up in the Mill House. Nell was always obsessed with the women in the river. What they did and who they left behind. Now, did Nell take it too far? Jules was always the fat sister (or so they said), the ugly one, and Nel the pretty one. A misunderstanding. Now she is forced to return to the place she never wanted to come back to look after her sister’s daughter (her niece), to sort out the bloody mess. She relives her past. The old memories resurfaced. Disturbing. Chilling. However, what she thought as a child was not the way it happened. No one ever communicated. There are many with dark grim secrets of the past. A picture is worth a thousand lies. “I was very young when I was cracked open. Some things you should let go. Others you shouldn’t. Views differ as to which – Emily Berry, The Numbers Game Amidst the drama, lies history in the town of Beckford. The Drowning Pool was a cliff-black and dark while sparkling in the summer. Contrasts. A place of spirits, hopeless people, despair. A place where people (women) go to end their lives. Or is a place where men use to end the women’s lives? Some of them went into the water willingly, some did not. Some went in fighting. A place of secrets. People turned a blind eye. No one liked to think about the fact that the water in the river was infected with the blood and bile of persecuted women, unhappy women. Not many people believed Nickie Sage, a woman who speaks with the spirits. Nel listened when she began writing a book about the events of the river and the haunted past. Detective Inspector Sean Townsend also has a past. He appears to be the upstanding policeman. His father Patrick was a former police officer known for his violence. His mom was also a victim of the Drowning Pool. Did she commit suicide or was she killed by her husband, Patrick? Did Sean as a boy witness his own mother’s death? What is real or what had he been told or made to believe? There were stories of witches dragged to the water since the 16th century or desperate women flinging themselves from the cliffs to the rocks below. Not many people liked Nel. . She likes married men. She was investigating. People in this town like to keep their dark hidden secrets under the radar. (and boy they are plentiful). Everyone wanted to put the deaths behind them, to get on with things. As the book moves forward with a large cast of characters. Libby (1679) Anne Ward (1920) Lauren (1983), (2015) Jules, Lena, and Nell (Danielle) Abbott; Katie, brother Josh, parents Louise and Alec; Nickie (psychic), Mark (teacher), DI Erin Morgan, DI Sean Townsend, wife Helen, dad Patrick. The author dives into gritty subjects of women’s abuse, underage teens having sex with older men, body image issues, and violence. You will be second guessing everyone and there are some evil characters who never take responsibility for their actions. Always passing off the blame. No one can be trusted. I can actually see this one playing out as a mini-TV series similar to Big Little Lies versus a simple movie. It has enough material to continue for numerous episodes. It would be powerful with the right cast. When approaching the last part of the book, it was absolutely unputdownable. For days, this one grabbed my attention. Mind-bending, and captivating! I loved Nikki (psychic) she is cynical and humorous. Very bad men and the women persecuted, even in the present. My reading experience: I pre-ordered the audiobook and within the first couple chapters, I realized this was not the kind of book you could be listening to while multi-tasking doing other work or running errands. There are multiple characters and you need to pay attention and learn the major players. All these introductions play into the bigger picture. From the middle to the end, the pieces all begin to come together. You will think you have guessed, and then you turn the page and think again. Trust me, you will be guessing to the final words. I decided to slow down, give the book my undivided attention. Also as a book blogger, I tend to speed read- rushing to get to the next book, as many of us do on a time schedule. However, with the wide range of reviews for this book, I wanted to spend more quality time. After listening to the entire audiobook and rewinding numerous times, attempting to bookmark, I decided to purchase the kindle book version, which was a nice way to go back and collect my notes of the characters for review writing. The audiobook was fantastic with an award-winning lineup of talented performers; however, would recommend both audio and book format. Laura Aikman, Rachel Bavidge, Sophie Aldred, Daniel Weyman, and Imogen Church (she is always spectacular). I read the editorial reviews the day the book released- the negative and positives. What I found most helpful were the interviews with the author. I enjoy learning about the inspiration behind the book. It will enhance your reading experience. In addition, enjoyed reading about Hawkins and her writing experience with her last book- having to borrow money from her dad to take the time to write the book. It was her last shot. She hit the literary jackpot. This is truly an inspirational story for any writer or reader. A success story. In Summary: I am more excited about the film of INTO THE WATER, more so than The Girl on the Train, even though I loved TGOTT movie. What will be interesting: all of us from the US hope it will once again be filmed here in the states (like her previous movie); however, sure the UK will want it to remain in their own backyard. Either way, I know it will be a "hit" and one I am dying to see! Another winner here! Highly creative. Demonstrates the author's skill and talent, to cross multiple genres. JDCMustReadBooks ...more |

Talented author, Caroline Mitchell returns following Love You to Death Detective Ruby Preston #1, landing on my Top Books of 2016 with yet another edge-of-your-seat thriller, WITNESS -A wicked, deliciously evil, slow-burning, taut psychological suspense crime thriller, with a killer twist. The book begins with a brief crime scene, 2007. There has been a murder. Rebecca’s work colleague (teachers at the same school); Jake age twenty-two has been stabbed in the home of Rebecca. She is a key witness. She tells the police, her boyfriend Solomon Kemp, was jealous. Rebecca Shepherd is afraid for her life. Solomon’s dad is a superintendent in the police department. This family has control. How would she ever be safe? She has tried to escape this man unsuccessfully in this past. Will they convict him and put him away? What would it be like to finally be safe, from this monster? Not having to account for her time or whereabouts. Being able to make decisions, choose her own clothes. An escape route from the mental torture Solomon inflicted, on a daily basis. He was a murderer, after all. Her fiancé. Did he have a part in her mother's death? Flash forward to 2016. Solomon has been released from prison after ten years. His father died while he was in prison. He had given up the last ten years of his life because of her, and she had repaid him in the most despicable way. At first, he was unable to comprehend it. His disbelief turned to hatred burning for years from his prison cell. Prison, was not kind to the son of a police superintendent, particularly one that had been privately educated. He was no stranger to bullying, beatings, and sexual abuse. Now he is out and planning his revenge. He had ten long years to work out how he was going to repay her misdeeds. Rebecca has started a new life. She goes by the name of Becky Walker. Her reinvention had helped her begin again. She married a veterinarian, Sean with his own practice, and she worked as his part-time receptionist. They had a quiet rural renovated farmhouse in the country in Pontyferry, with a young daughter Lottie, and dog, Bear. Also, Sean’s sister, Rhian with MS, who watches their daughter. A small knit community where everyone looked out for one another. Now she feels like someone is watching her. Has her past come back to haunt her?. The nightmares have returned. She did not want to be dragged into the past, she had tried and worked hard to forget. Solomon knows her secret. He would not rest until she paid for it. Flashing back and forth from the past to present. From diary entries starting in 2007, readers get bits and pieces of the life of Rebecca. How she met Solomon and where it all went wrong. We also learn about Solomon's abusive childhood. Like most domestic abusers, they start out handsome and charming and slowly develop their control and manipulation of their victim and their family. How would she ever break free? Solomon is a computer genius and has the skills to control. He will carry out his plan. He is empowered. Watching Rebecca (Becky’s) every move from afar. He would enjoy stripping away the layers, testing the limits of her morals, until she revealed herself for what she really was. He always was one step ahead. Becky soon realizes Solomon had been released from prison early. Her worst nightmare. She is looking over her shoulder, filled with fear day and night. Anxiety. Waiting for the bomb to drop. How long would it be before he came after her?. His thirst for revenge. She knew his skills and he would be able to track her down. She would be putting her entire family in harm’s way. She knew what Solomon was capable of. Solomon has been in her home. He is watching her. Dark thoughts. Soon he begins his plan. He forces her to witness a crime. Each one is someone she knows. She has to choose the victim. Failure to respond, her family gets hurt. Nor can she talk to the police. A sick cat-and-mouse game, with only 60 seconds to decide. Tick Tock! OMG! As usual, Mitchell knows how to build suspense and a pro at setting up elaborate "true-to-life" crime scenes. From her own past career in the law enforcement area, dealing with true to life domestic cases. Psychological suspense crosses suburban noir. Who is controlling whom? What really made this thriller "over-the-top-delicious"--You are thinking, "Why would any person go along with these crazy demands?" Just go to the cops. After all, he is a convicted felon. Get a restraining order. However, he is dangerous, smart, and sly. Also, you are unsure if Rebecca (Becky) is a reliable narrator, which adds to the intrigue. She is complex. What is she hiding? You know something is coming. There is a secret, Rebecca (Becky) is hiding. This secret is why she cannot come forward. Can she outsmart him? This dark and an evil secret will keep readers glued to the pages! Carve out the time. It demands your undivided attention and will be" more than difficult" to put down. I read in one sitting, dying to know how this would turn out, page-turning to the explosive reveal. Trust me, it is Chilling! The author continues to get better and better (if this is possible). Twisty, Gritty, Nail-Biting Grip-Lit! Mitchell fans and those of B.A. Paris', Behind Closed Doors and Fiona Barton's The Widow will enjoy the WITNESS and the satisfying twist. A special thank you to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. JDCMustReadBooks ...more |

Top Books of 2016! First, let me begin by saying. I LOVE ATLAS! Unforgettable. He can cook for me any day or night. Second, this was my first book Top Books of 2016! First, let me begin by saying. I LOVE ATLAS! Unforgettable. He can cook for me any day or night. Second, this was my first book by Colleen Hoover! (can you believe it)? The first, of MANY more to come. (adding her backlist as quickly as possible). Wow, she is like no author I have ever read. Her style is Unique. Superb. Moving. Third, IT ENDS WITH US was truly amazing on all levels! Emotionally charged, powerful, compelling! I savored every minute. My Top 10 Books of 2016! Words cannot adequately describe my feelings about this book. Trust me, move it to the "Top" of your reading list (like now). Epic in every way. From domestic violence, abuse, control, suspense, obsession, hope, courage, love, healing, understanding, and compassion. An array of emotions from all extremes. IT ENDS WITH US, opens with Lily Bloom, age twenty-three. She has just buried her father and gave an epically disastrous eulogy- and now she feels she cannot breathe. Her father is Andrew Bloom, the adored mayor of her hometown of Plethora, Maine. He was the owner of the most successful real estate agency, and the husband of Jenny Bloom, her mother, and teaching assistant. He has a violent temper- verbally and mentally abusive. Lily has watched her abusive father beat her mom her entire life. She is escaping to a rooftop in Boston to think and clear her head. Why did her mom stay in this type of relationship all these years. Lily Bloom once fell in love with a homeless guy (he was a senior in high school). Atlas changed her life. (what a moving story-“award-winning”). Her relationship with this nineteen-year-old teen, when she was fifteen, brought shame upon her family. However, it changed her for the better. She will never forget him. She will always love him. What she does not know- he feels the same. While on the roof that night (present), she meets a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, and they hit it off. They become acquainted with “naked truths.” He is almost thirty years old and has no desire for a wife. He does not want children-- the only thing he wants out of life is success. However, there was so much more he is hiding. Lily does not see him again until much later, after she opens her own florist business and runs into a gal (Allysa)—wealthy husband, hard worker, with a fabulous personality and talks Lily into working with her. Of course, she happens to be the sister of Ryle. They become BFFs very quickly. Are there really bad people? Is she missing all the signs and the secret tragic- troubled past of Ryle? All those years when she could not understand why her mom put up with her dad’s abuse. She despised her dad. Will she find herself caught in the same situation? When love clouds your judgment. Sometimes it is the one who loves you- who hurts you the most. Gripping! The author brilliantly crafts a remarkable story. Hoover slowly unravels the past, sprinkled with poignant journal entries from a dairy Lily kept as a girl. She addressed each of her entries to Ellen DeGeneres, (LOVED) because she began watching her show every day when she was just a little girl. Then as she was older, every day after school and was convinced Ellen would love her if she got to know her. She wrote letters to her regularly until she turned sixteen, but wrote them like one would write entries in a diary. She never mailed them. She swore she would never read them again, but with the passing of her father, she began thinking about her childhood. Somehow Lily wanted to find a little strength for forgiveness, or possibly run the risk of building up more resentment. Slowly the past is unraveled, keeping readers glued to the pages with the poignant story of Lily and Atlas Corrigan, a senior in high school, and homeless. What happened to these two? Why are they not together now? Both from broken abusive homes, the story will touch your heart, while rooting for these two until the ending. Enter Ryle (love triangle) and more complications. I kept expecting Ellen to jump out of the pages, before the ending (I think a special Ellen show, is in order. An entire show devoted to IT ENDS WITH US) It would be "fabulous!" Would also make a great movie. The author’s writing evokes so many emotions. The past and present connect. A boy and a girl, both drawn together by circumstance, time, and space. Torn apart. Will fate bring their paths together again, when they least expect? Lily will learn firsthand of the difficult choices, and decisions her mother had to face. Does everyone have a little good and evil in them? Darkness and light. From flowers to people, emotions, choices, sacrifices, and lives are connected. Understanding women in abusive situations, with compassion, when things are not always black and white as it seems from the exterior. In domestic abuse, how many times do you forgive? When do you walk away? Each person is defined by their past. All characters are flawed in some way. Inspiring! Loved the note from the author. Compelling, perplexing, and ultimately uplifting! I loved ATLAS!. He is too good to end…I hope we hear more from him in the future. A mix of contemporary, domestic suspense, and romance. This one tops the list in women’s fiction. A must-read for every woman, no matter your age. Strong family, mother-daughter, and relationships. I loved IT ENDS WITH US so much, purchased the audiobook narrated by Olivia Song for a moving repeat experience. A perfect title. For fans of Sarah Pekkanen, Paula Treick DeBoard, Nicholas Sparks, and Amy Hatvay. Blog Review @JudithDCollin #JDCMustReadBooks A special thank you to Atria and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. 5 Stars +++ UPDATE: YES! Cannot wait for It Starts with Us coming Oct 2022. I have been waiting for years for this book where we hear from fan-favorite Atlas’ side of the story. The most anticipated book of 2022! Pre-ordered all formats. * * * * * * * * On a personal note: It is difficult for me to close without a final word. This was a special book for me for many reasons. My mom was also in a verbally abusive controlling relationship her entire life (my dad), and difficult to watch her vivid personality crushed beneath his control. She was a woman of many talents. Unfortunately, my ex-husband turned out even worse (his dark side came out after the honeymoon), as well. I managed to escape my husband's control after five years (been happily single for the last 35 yrs); however, my mom stayed in the abusive relationship for sixty-five long years until her death. (Women of this time felt they had no choice). During the reading of this book, I was called home from Florida to North Carolina, to take care of my mom in her final days while at home, and then hospice the last few difficult days, She died at age 84, this week (Aug 8) and the funeral is Friday (Aug 12), after a courageous three-year battle with colon cancer. Her 2013 diagnosis of colon cancer spurred a brave and inspirational fight against the disease. She remained tenacious, and a true fighter, to the bitter end. From strength, courage, and peace-her spirit never faltered. I had the pleasure of writing her obituary and included all her many talents and traits - she touched so many lives. (hope Mom is smiling). Sometimes we wonder why the special ones are taken. I so wish she could have read this incredible book. I hope she is finally in a better place. I feel my mom sacrificed so much, and reading this book helped me understand her a little better. Update: My dad died 10 months later after mom with COPD. My apologies, for being late with the writing of this review. Thank you, Colleen. Your writing is assured to touch many, who have found themselves in similar circumstances. ...more |

Once she leaves the institute, she has more issues to face. Slowly the past abuse comes in bits and pieces with the help of therapist. Her past has defined her. The deep rooted fissures in the O’Malley family come to the surface. She has to face the past, memories--love herself, in order to move forward. Powerfully written, Kletter follows one young woman's journey through heartbreak and loss to courage and resolve, as she searches for the truth. Superbly crafted combined with suspenseful narrative, THE FIRST TIME SHE DROWNED is a gripping, harrowing study of a troubled mother and daughter relationship, from a remarkable new storyteller. For fans of Jodi Picoult, T. Greenwood, Julie Buxbaum, and Rochelle B. Weinstein, as well as the YA and adult domestic suspense readers. I listened to the audio book, narrated by Jorjeana Marie delivering a spellbinding performance! If this is a debut, can't wait to see what follows, from this talented author. Talented crime writer, Jennifer Jaynes returns following Never Smile at Strangers, and Ugly Young Thing with her “best yet”- DON’T SAY A WORD, an enthralling psychological crime mystery suspense thriller, guaranteed to keep you glued to the pages from the first page, to the explosive ending- leaving you breathless! Allie Callahan has not had an easy life. An orphan, with a horrific past and childhood—her mom and brother suffered from mental illness. In her younger years, she even attempted to end her own life, when left all alone to face the brutal world. She still has scars and fears. At sixteen, she was given the opportunity to have a real life. A real family. A new start. She was adopted by her kind older foster mom, Bitty Callahan. She loves and respects her. A home she has always dreamed of. Now twenty-two, Allie and her young son, Sammy and dog Piglet--- reside with Bitty, in their comfortable home in Texas. She is putting her demons behind her. However, she has to continue to put the old unhealthy voices from her biological mother aside. Bitty always taught her, “Fear makes the wolf bigger than he is.” Allie always feared losing her mind, and becoming incapable of being the type of mother her four- year-old son, Sammy deserved. Sammy was her reason for living. For everything. Allie was excited about the new chapter in her life, in terms of her career, she was following in Bitty’s footsteps as a wellness practitioner. She was drawn to the work for many reasons, but mainly because it was rewarding and flexible. As the book opens there is a brutal murder. Two twelve-year-old twin girls (Zoe and Carrie), are left in their home alone for days with their murdered parents. They are traumatized. When the authorities arrive, the girls are sent by child protective service to reside in foster care with Bitty. Allie was a little nervous when foster children came to stay. She always felt uneasy each time a new kid arrived; however, she could not tell Bitty. Allie admired the fact Bitty fostered kids. Bitty had given her a second chance at happiness—a chance most kids with past like hers never got. So she would help any way she could. She owed it to Bitty. The twins are NOT ordinary. They were coming from the rich Sherman Landing area nearby. Even though the girls had lived in a poor white trash trailer park, their deceased dad had recently won $1.2 million dollars. From drugs and abuse from mom, and truck driver dad, on the road the majority of the time. When the caseworker brought the girls to stay with the Callahan's, they soon learned the girls are very disturbed. Carrie would not speak and very withdrawn. Zoe tended to be more outspoken, and even manipulative, at times. Could she trust them to be around her son? Zoe-dissociative amnesia. Carrie selective mutism. Due to their trauma, the caseworker mentioned in addition to their parent’s murder, the younger brother was hit by a truck and killed three years earlier and the girls witnessed the tragic event. The grandmother wants nothing to do with them. Total dysfunction. From detectives, forensic therapist, Child Advocacy, and caseworkers-- everyone was involved in the case. Allie knew all too well, people never healed from the horror of murder. Not completely. Allie always helped Bitty with the foster children—she was never emotionally invested. This time she becomes involved. As the investigation continues, Gary, the mom’s boyfriend shows up, putting them all in danger. Allie’s former boyfriend, Johnny (Sammy’s dad) shows up without any notice, and she is ready to put him out of her life. Their personal lives and home become insanity. A check was written for seven hundred thousand the day before the murders, Prone to depression and anxiety attacks, Allie had learned to control her thoughts before they spiraled out of control. However, since the twins came to live with them, nothing is normal. Strange phone calls, cars, hang-ups, and weird behavior with both girls. Another murder. Since she laid eyes on these girls, the whole safe world that had taken her years to build felt as flimsy as a house of cards. There is tension between the twins, and something is not right. Carrie was more self-conscious (Allie can relate to her if she will let her in). Carrie has been cutting herself and is slowly slipping away. Zoe tends to want to bond with Allie; more confident--her personality goes from good to bad. Allie wants to trust the girls around her son Sammy, however, she is overprotective. Is she putting him in danger around the girls? From blood-curdling shrieks, screams--the girls needed her help—she could not deny them; she can sympathize—she has been there; however, is she putting her life and her son’s in harm’s way? Who really murdered the twin's parents? Wow, this is one intense saga---secrets and lies. Flashing back and forth we hear from the time prior to the murders. Slowly the author cleverly peels back the layers of the events leading up to the murders. Nothing is as it appears. Chilling, dark, gripping, shocking, and un-put-downable! When I looked up from the book for the first time 50% through the book. From 50%-75%, the intensity is mind-blowing. From 75% to the ending, fast-paced action--twists and turns you do not see coming! You are totally invested in the characters—Damaged with a Capital “D”. Forget about sleeping. With Allie’s delicate complex and tortured past, co-mingled with the twins domestic current and past mental situation, strongly emphasizing the psychology of its characters and their unstable emotional states. Obsessive, pathological, moral conflicts, fear, and anxiety are strong drivers. No one can write EVIL better than Jennifer. I enjoyed hearing from Sammy's perspective; a four-year-old’s view (priceless), as well as Zoe, Carrie, and Allie. (Since the author is a mother of younger twins, she shines here). Sammy is full of wonder and curiosity- very observant. You will love him and want to give him a big hug. He likes to spy on others. He is innocent and he thinks it is fun. A cautionary tale for mothers--you never know what secrets your child may be keeping. A strong mother’s love. Sammy is her priority. You will love Bitty, and readers root for Allie, to the end--and sympathize with her situation. Hoping Allie will find some happiness in the next book with a possible new budding romance with the sexy Detective. (Knowing Jaynes, it will not be a smooth road). Can't wait. If you are looking for a scary crime thriller that sends chills down your spine, leaving you on the edge of your seat until the very end---this one is for you. A mix of Gothic, domestic, crime, psychological, detective, action, drama, horror, suspense, mystery, and thriller. The author rocks! Integrating personal character elements into mystery and suspense, toeing the line between a dramatic character study and a plot structure you'd expect from a strong psycho-crime horror thriller movie. (would make for a great Prime series). For fans of Mark Edwards, Kathryn Croft, Lisa Unger, and Jennifer Hillier. Recommend reading Jennifer’s first two books above, while awaiting the release date of her third installment. Even though Don’t Say A Word, may be read as a standalone -the author does an outstanding job of getting you up to speed; however, in order to really get a good grasp of the main protagonist, you will want to read the previous books----All three are top quality! The author just keeps getting better (if this is possible). Thanks, Jennifer, all your efforts have not gone unnoticed. A winner! A special thank you to the author, NetGalley, and Thomas & Mercer for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. JDCMustReadBooks ...more |

Sp A special thank you to Library Thing for a complimentary reading copy in exchange for an honest review. MERCY’S RAIN, by Christian writer, Cindy K. Sproles, a chilling, and heartbreaking portrayal of the historic nineteenth century Appalachia mountains of Tennessee—a poignant story of the evils of man, and the mercy of God. A novel of betrayal, faith, forgiveness and redemption. Set in 1897 in Wadalow Mountain, Tennessee, Merc Roller, a young woman has lived with abuse most of her life, at the hands of her father, the Pastor. It appears no one will stand up to this man, as he uses his authority and control to ruin lives. He is twisted and took on the role of Judge, Jury, and Jesus. How will she escape this life? What about God’s love? She has only known what she has experienced in her own environment? Abused, broken, and bitter, she takes the Pastor’s life. Now she becomes what she hated about him. Sent away by her angry grieving mother, and she meets a young preacher and a different life. Now there was no washing away her sin and guilt. She had made a decision and one she would regret, and one she would have to live with. Until she finds herself on the other side of the mountain, and learns about God’s real love through others. With memorable characters, Sproles creates an emotional and captivating story of suffering and damage, and uses God’s compassion, love, grace, and mercy to transform a broken life. A great lesson for us all. Judith D. Collins Must Read Books ...more |

Noble sets the mood for an intriguing and mysterious story of something happening years ago. Slowly each character and a story unravels as we come to terms with the abusive memories from the past. A special thank you to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Wow, TUCKERS WAY (The Tucker Series Book #1) A special thank you to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Wow, TUCKERS WAY (The Tucker Series Book #1) may be one of the best books of 2014! You know you have discovered a winning book, when you begin sending out recommendations to all of your reading friends, before you are even fifty percent through the book. I love discovering new found authors! David Johnson’s TUCKER'S WAY is a powerful, heartfelt and emotional story of one woman’s journey from incest, abuse, poverty, to the raising of her three grandchildren – a book of love, loss, faith; tragedy and triumph, filled with humor. Tucker is dirt poor with a lack of education and social graces. A single grown woman, living on welfare, and raising her three grandchildren in rural northwest Tennessee. She has experienced a hard life, with years of abuse since childhood, and practically raised herself. Now her youngest grandchild April will not speak and social services is threatening to take her way, so she turns to her new neighbor for help. (and Tucker does not do help well). Tucker has made plenty many enemies in the small Tennessee country southern town, as loves to carry an axe, and use it when needed, and can fight like a man. She has hardened herself and does not trust others with a temper; however, she is fearless when it comes to protecting those she loves. When she finds out her main enemy (The Judge)’s ex-wife has moved in next door, she is furious. Ella, has a difficult time breaking down the walls to try and befriend her neighbor Tucker (too funny). However, Ella has experienced cancer, a cheating and abusive husband and a son following in his dad’s footsteps, so she knows heartache, as well. When these two meet, both from different walks of life, they learn from one another in so many ways. When troubles surface, they learn their lives connect in many different ways and develop a friendship and an unbreakable bond, leaving you smiling. For fans of historical fiction Dollbaby, by Laura Lane McNeal, and Necessary Lies by Diane Chamberlain, TUCKER'S WAY and The Tucker Series is for you! These were two of my most beloved books and this one sits next to them. A bittersweet "must read series" which will keep you laughing and crying, at the same time. I am so delighted I saw the popup ad on the Goodreads (they work); when I read the summary, knew this was going to be a special book to treasure; and immediately requested it through NetGalley. David Johnson knows southern fiction, from the country southern dialect, the setting, and the characters. You care about the characters, as if you were there in the log cabin next to the fire, or sitting on the swing or rocker on the porch, or listening to the words of the southern songs. Johnson's extensive background with over over thirty-five years as a licensed marriage and family therapist with a master’s degree in social work and over a decade of experience as a minister, speaks throughout the pages with in depth insights into social issues, poverty, human behavior, family dynamics, abuse, incest, dysfunction, emotions of the heart and life's lessons. Now, I am dying to read the other books in the series, and have been busy requesting as have to find out more about Tucker, Ella, April, March, and August. Tucker has seen and experienced abuse like no child, teen or adult should ever see, which has hardened her heart; however, she reminds me of Tyler Perry's Madea, with her manly rough and tough exterior, keeping you in stitches with her wit and humor, and a true fearless best friend to those she protects and loves. A huge fan of Madea, as have seen all the movies, and had to laugh when I read other reviewers with the same thought. Love the relationship between Ella and Tucker, from two different backgrounds. This book would make a great movie! I also enjoyed reading about the author's inspiration for writing the series, to help others who find themselves in similar circumstances, as they overcome tragedy. Next on my list! Will keep my fingers crossed to get an ARC, as do not think I can wait until Dec 9 to learn the fate of my new friends. Judith D. Collins Must Read Books ...more |

A special thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. A long-time fan of Canadian author, Chevy Stevens A special thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. A long-time fan of Canadian author, Chevy Stevens, my sixth book, and my “go to" author when it comes to riveting suspense thrillers. Her upcoming latest, THOSE GIRLS,will keep you entertained from beginning to end, with this intense, gripping, emotional and powerful page-turner of three sisters' love, loyalty, survival and revenge. Set in rural Littlefield, a small town near the Alberta border, a place without job opportunities, mainly farming or logging since the mill had closed down, pushing men to work in Calgary, a few hours away. The girls’ dad worked three weeks in and one out --typically he would spend most of the off time in a bar, or drinking until his next shift. The three Campbell sisters live with their abusive dad on a ranch, where they work to help pay for their rent, since the bank had foreclosed on their old house. They have had a hard life growing up poor—after their mom died, (truck accident), and their dad lost his job. At the time they ended up in foster homes and was unable to stay together. The foster homes were just as bad, leaving the girls constantly trying to escape more abuse. After five months their dad came back (promising to stay sober). Presently, here they are, barely making ends meet while the girls work on the ranch, having dropped out of school, and hiding out from their abusive dad’s anger—trying to find food and survive. They do not want to be separated or go back into foster care –they are desperate and need to stay clear of social services. As the book opens the dad has arrived home, drunk once again and this time is in full rage. In order to escape, they have to take matters into their own hands when their dad is about to kill their sister — three days later they are on the run. The night the three Campbell sisters ran away, everything changed, including their names. Meet the Campbell Sisters, THOSE GIRLS: Jess (Jamie) is the smart sister. The youngest of three, age fifteen. The one who typically thinks with her head and remains out of trouble. She loves photography. She wants to stay in school, get married, and have a family; however, her dreams do not seem anywhere near realistic. Now, it is about survival. She is forced to do unspeakable acts. Dani (Dallas) The oldest sister, age eighteen and the bossy one... She has been angry as long as she can remember. Even before their mother died. Angry at her dad, angry at her mom for not leaving, for always giving her dad another chance. After being slapped around at foster homes, being beaten by her dad, and trying to protect her sisters. She would never be happy, she would never get to marry Corey and have his babies and rock on the porch and laugh. She now is numb and shows no emotion. Courtney (Crystal) is the middle sister age sixteen pretty, sexy, a wild child and is constantly in trouble. She follows no rules, a free spirit, and acts and thinks later. Currently she is having an affair with a married man and her dad has just received the news. She is highly emotional, impulsive, depressed, and finds herself into trouble with drugs, alcohol, and sex --and you never can predict her next move. She never learns from her mistakes. She has a beautiful voice and has dreamed of moving to Nashville to become a famous singer. That night the abuse was worse, and in order to survive the girls were forced to go on the run, with little money. They want to make it to Vancouver, a larger town, to hide out and start over. They covered their tracks and hit the road, making their way to a small town Cash Creek, where their truck breaks down. The guys (Brian/Gaven) have stopped to help, they are charming and stated they worked at a garage. In order to pay for the repairs, they were told they could find work on a farm. However, out of one fire into another, the three sisters find themselves captured, abducted, and treated like animals once again. How will they escape? From rape, murder, abuse, and torture-these guys, are pure evil and sadistic! When they finally manage to escape they have to establish new names and identities. They know these guys will come looking and will kill them. They are running from not one situation, but two. Just when they are settled in a new town with new lives, the unthinkable happens. Eighteen years later, some new players. Courtney is out of control, risking all their lives. She takes off to get revenge, as she has never forgotten these guys, and one of their own is following her, leading all the girls back to the evil and abuse and the scene of the crime. Now they are forced to re-live their past and try and protect one another from the dangers in Cash Creek, a time when their lives were broken beyond repair. Wow, Chevy always keeps you on-the-edge of your seat with intense twists, turns, and surprises. These poor girls cannot catch a break. One minute you are rooting for them and the next, questioning their actions. More than a suspense crime thriller, THOSE GIRLS plunges into the emotional bonds of three sisters fearlessly protective of one another; a novel of family, desperation, tragedy and love. The novel would make for a chilling suspense movie! Judith D. Collins Must Read Books ...more |

To the Edge of Shadows by Joanne Graham is a deeply moving and complex psychological thriller of loss, obsession, and survival— of two women with a past. One with a past forgotten, she wishes to regain; and the other one with an abusive past, she desires to forget. Sarah Phillips was seriously injured in a car crash when she was thirteen years old and has no memory of her childhood or family. Her father and sister died in the crash and now her loving, Aunt Leah is her only family remaining. However, she continues to have images, headaches, and nightmares of the event, while suffering from severe amnesia. Later she moves out on her own, thinking her aunt wants her to be more independent. There is a girl living in the same block of apartments named Ellie. Ellie has a past she wants to forget, of an abusive mother and a father who could not protect her, with a horrific childhood. Ellie finds Sarah fascinating and this turns into an obsession, of stalking. Ellie wishes she had amnesia to take away her painful past and resents Sarah because she can. Ellie is adventurous, outgoing and craves for a life quite different from the one she is living. As Sarah struggles to make sense of her situation without Leah’s support, Ellie begins to take over her life. The first part of the novel focuses on Sarah’s recovery and trying to fill in the gaps of her past with OCD and PTSD traits. She desires routine and control. As the two characters alternate from past to present (with a different font), the suspense builds with deep descriptive emotions and feelings, where we learn about the complexities of each girl and their innermost thoughts. A haunting, dark, suspenseful and cleverly written psychological thriller with many twists, turns, and surprises; keeping you reading into the wee hours of the morning. The characters were well-drawn,and as a few other reviewers have mentioned, Graham’s vivid descriptions and poetic writing, is mesmerizing at times, and I too, found myself bookmarking many pages and phrases. I appreciated the insights and explorations of this highly charged subject of mental illness and its emotional impact. I look forward to reading Graham's debut, Lacey’s House, and more from this exciting newfound author! Judith D. Collins Must Read Books ...more |

When reading an advanced reading copy of upcoming Lies That Bind (Maeve Conlon #2) Feb 17, 2015, by Maggie Barbieri, was curious about the characters, and the intriguing back story, I immediately stopped the second book to purchase Once Upon a Lie (Maeve Colon #1). Maeve is no ordinary woman. She knows pain and suffering. Currently her life is in constant chaos. The Comfort Zone, her bakery is barely surviving, her ex-husband, Cal and younger wife have a new baby, trying to balance home and work with two daughters, her father has Alzheimer’s and each passing day, slowly fading, and her evil cousin, Sean is dead (yeah, let’s celebrate). And she manages to keep her wit (she is hilarious), and her friendship with fellow employee and friend, Jo (kinda ditsy, divorced and cancer survivor) wants to speed date and get back on the horse. Her father, Jack, a former cop, is a suspect in the murder, and currently living in an assisted living home love him, as full of dark humor with his friends and funny one liners. Some days he remembers, and some not. Is this for real or just a show? Edgy! The audiobook was both witty and intense. Maggie Barbieri is an author I will be adding to my favorite list - love her style. The narrator, Kathleen Mary Carthy delivered an outstanding performance with her dark and mysterious sarcastic humor, keeping me entertained for hours. Once Upon a Lie (Maeve Colon #1) is not a cozy simple mystery, it is engrossing, suspenseful, and complex keeping you on the “edge of your seat”, turning the pages to learn the fate of this colorful and eccentric cast of characters. Loving this newfound author and cannot wait to get back to Lies That Bind (Maeve Conlon #2). An intriguing series of family, friendships, and lies . . Read them both, Highly recommend! ...more |

A top shelf, riveting and powerful debut novel, JUST WHAT KIND OF MOTHER ARE YOU? by British author Paula Daly is a compelling novel—a read for ever
A top shelf, riveting and powerful debut novel, JUST WHAT KIND OF MOTHER ARE YOU? by British author Paula Daly is a compelling novel—a read for every woman, living a harried lifestyle, trying to balance work, home, and family. Filled with humor and emotion, this book will keep you turning into the night, for a mix of suspense, mystery, thriller, family drama, crime, and women’s fiction. Set in the Lake District, with economic hardship, and busy families, centered on two mothers of teenage girls. Lisa and taxi driver husband, Joe live a hectic life, struggling financially, where Lisa tries to balance her stressing job managing the local dog shelter, a non-profit, even checking out the homes of animals to be placed, running her home, and juggling the kids. When her daughter's friend Lucinda turns up missing after she was supposed to spend the night at Lisa's home, Lisa is wrecked with guilt and blame. Lucianda, the daughter of her friend Kate Riverty, is abducted and everyone thinks she should have paid more attention, pointing the finger at her. Now, it looks like the kidnapper, who has already abducted one other girl, is back at work, so Lisa begins her own investigation. She feels to blame so she begins working overtime trying to figure out the pieces of puzzle. In addition, Joanne Aspinall, the investigator with the local police seems suspicious of the events. There is drama and suspense coming from every direction, not knowing who can be trusted. The lengths one mother will go in order to keep her family. As tragedy strikes, what comes next is shocking as nothing is as it appears—when ugly truths are uncovered. I enjoyed the inspiration for the novel regarding an Oprah show of the busy mother forgetting her daughter in a hot car, which killed her. Lisa was a flawed and likable character, as she never feels like she is good enough and feels inferior next to her other friends—as most mother’s always striving for perfection. An exploration of friendship, motherhood, and the mystery of human relationships turned wrong, when the perfect house is not so perfect behind the façade. Thriller and mystery lovers alike will devour, as well as fans of highly charged subjects, mixed with humor: JoJo Moyes, Liane Moriarty, Carla Buckley, Diane Chamberlain, Sarah Pekkanen, Amy Hatvany, and Jennifer Weiner will appreciate the humor and complexity! The audiobook was outstanding, as the narrator, Laura Brattan offered an excellent performance, and found myself laughing out loud, at some of the one-liners. I wish more authors would use her, as could listen to her all day. Well-developed characters, excellent plot planning, and fast-paced action, making for a winning debut of motherhood, friendship, and complex relationships. One of my favorite authors! A special thank you to BQB Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. FAMILY INHERITANCE, by Terri Ann Leidich is a riveting A special thank you to BQB Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. FAMILY INHERITANCE, by Terri Ann Leidich is a riveting novel, of a family’s hopes and dreams and the tragedies and secrets which haunt them, as they journey to forgiveness and acceptance. Three sisters are reunited at their dying mother’s bedside, Anna Teresa Miller –in the old farmhouse in northern Minnesota. Anna is dying and she does not care, as how could death be worse than her life? As the novel opens Anna relives her life and where it all went wrong at age sixteen, pregnant and forced to marry Walter, a reluctant groom, at best. Anna’s life had no room for dreams or play. She hears a voice; she cannot die in peace until she comes to terms with her daughters. Each of her daughters all imagined a better life. However, each have lived through an abusive and loveless childhood with their demons, secrets, and bad memories, driving their currently dysfunctional life with poor choices. Helene, always the strong one, leaves behind a shell of a marriage in Atlanta and her false country club lifestyle not at all what it seems. In Northern Minnesota, in her cracker box house government subsidized neighborhood, Alice has finally fled an abusive husband, Jake, and is afraid her failing courage will put her children in danger. In Dallas, Suzanne can no longer deny how an alcohol addiction may destroy everything she's worked for--an addiction that barely masks the terrible wounds from her father. Family Inheritance is an emotional and heartbreaking novel, one of flawed and troubled characters, with highly charged social issues of abuse, alcoholism, rape, and infidelity. As the sisters are forced to come together in their time of need, and face their past and feelings, their buried hurts surface in order to move with on with acceptance, courage, and forgiveness. A beautifully written and inspiring family drama--one of overcoming life’s messiness, and not allowing it to have the control and power to define your future. Looking forward to reading more by Terri Ann Leidich! http://www.judithdcollinsconsulting.c... ...more |

After Liane Moriarty's famous The Husband’s Secret, comes BIG LITTLE LIES— a powerful novel and once again a group of women with secrets of tragedy and abuse, bearing the truths, holding nothing back--filled with humor and craziness in suburban Australia. Pirriwee Public's annual school Trivia Night has ended in a shocking riot. One parent is dead. The school principal is horrified. As police investigate what appears to have been a tragic accident, signs begin to indicate that this devastating death might have been cold-blooded murder. In this thought-provoking novel, we see the honesty, raw emotions, and realistic and sometimes dark side of parenting, ex-wives, ex-husbands, second wives, pasts which still haunt, bullying, domestic abuse, violence, politics, and dysfunctional families in every shape and form. Again, I enjoyed Caroline Lee, audiobook, performer, as she does not miss a beat with her stunning accent and stellar performance. She is quite the gifted actor and narrator who has worked extensively in theatre, film and television. Combined with talented author and writer, Moriarty, this makes for a dynamic duo. (highly recommend the audiobook, which will keep you entertained)! Liane’s style is unique, “all over the board”, with characters--at times--wild, crazy, quirky, troubled, and humorous. Reading/listening to her books is like being a bystander in a private home whenever no one thinks you are listening, or on a girl’s night out. Told from multiple POVs, BIG LITTLE LIES captures you from page one and leaves you hanging until the fate of each of the characters, building suspense for the climatic Trivia Night and events leading to this night. Throughout the book we hear from Madeline, Celeste, and Jane– three women with more in common than they may think. Madeline is age 40, is wacky, sassy, and resides in the same town as her ex-husband Nathan with his perfect second wife, Bonnie. Madeline has remarried to a great guy with two children and now their 14 yr. old daughter wants to live with her dad. Drama. Celeste is stunning, and married to a wealthy man, Perry with two twin boys and everyone thinks she has it all. To the outside world, looks can be deceiving. However, behind closed doors, full of violence, abuse, and sickness which is not hidden from the children. Well-liked by the other mothers, what they don't know is that she's a victim of domestic abuse. Next, there is Jane, a single mother with her son, Ziggy (age 5), who has recently moved to the area. She lives to stay thin, and holds the troubles of her past, and has never recovered. Struggling to make ends meet, she is the mysterious one. It all begins when they are on their way to kindergarten orientation which brings the three women together—each with problems of their own as they are drawn together; however, when they collide, there will be an explosion of years of anger and hurt. When Ziggy is accused of bullying a female kindergarten classmate of a high-powered attorney, and a petition is rendered to try and have the boy suspended, dividing the parents. There is much depth to this story as dives deep into the dysfunction of families (parents and children). By keeping quiet and telling lies, ultimately does not help matters; however, further complicates the issues. From the Australian setting to the fast paced, page-turner suspense drama, this novel will keep you on the edge, with razor sharp writing which sets this author apart, and does so with style, offering second chances for a satisfying read. Update TV series Revisiting my review after a few years have passed since reading the book. Watching the HBO series (which is enthralling). Drama city. Love the beautiful California coastal setting. Have watched two episodes and LOVING Reese Witherspoon (Madeline)! She takes Jane under her wing after Jane helps her out on the first day of school. She loves to stir up trouble with a capital T. Nichole Kidman (Celeste) & hubby are disturbing/dark with their sick sex games/abuse. Shailene Woodley (Jane) 24-year-old single mother who is quiet, intriguing, struggling to make ends meet and has to deal with her son Ziggy being a pariah (or is he)? Recommend reading the book and the TV series. ...more |

AR Torre’s THE GIRL IN 6E, an erotic A special thank you to Redhook and Netgalley for a complimentary reading copy in exchange for an honest review. AR Torre’s THE GIRL IN 6E, an erotic psychological thriller, which will knock your socks off and then some! Congrats on the Huffington Post article today (7/10/14), regarding the "talked about" THE GIRL IN 6E. “Why Do We Find Sex More Shocking Than Violence?” Torre explains what it means to push boundaries with erotica and her new novel, that hop-scotches the line between sex and suspense. First readers, Torre's photo is adorable; the fresh face, hip, girl next door. (she reminds me of a younger Jennifer Weiner, and Emily Giffin) with her open and honest writing. Loved the frontcover, as well. Let’s talk about her writing! Very impressive, and this is where she reminds me of Jennifer Hillier (The Butcher, Creep, Freak). Both authors can get down and dark to uncover the complexities of the human troubled mind. This is my first book by A.R. Torre, and cannot wait to read her other books. This gal can write, people—and holds back nothing. Predict she will be a bestselling author for years to come, and one to watch! Now, all you excessively virtuous do-gooders, frowning upon sex and erotica, unfortunately, get over it to read this book (or not); as you are missing out. Unfortunately, when horrible acts happen to children, or others suffering from the war, or other acts of violence, PTSD, or abuse; they cannot just step back in, with the snap of fingers, and return to a normal state of society, pretending nothing happened. They have scars and damage, and each victim handles their situation differently, as a means to cope; therefore, we have psycho thrillers, to get into the complex and realistic minds of those troubled individuals. So, if you can get through the explicit sex in the first twenty-five percent of the novel, you will be so engrossed in this book you will not know what hit you. Another tidbit –definitely buy the audiobook. Jorjeana Marie, performs brilliantly! (she read for Chevy Stevens’ That Night, another 5 star winner). When you are listening to a book of this nature, the narrator will make or break you, and in this case—a hit! Please all you authors out there, I am a huge audio fan so let’s have more of Jorjeana Marie (a pleasing voice). When you spend 7-14 hrs with an audiobook, you have to love the performer. THE BOOK: let’s talk about this unbelievable freaky, and lovable wild novel. Meet former Deanna Martin. She now goes by the name of Jessica, an online sex cammer-charging $6.99 a minute (after all she never leaves the apartment, so she can rack up as much as most people make in a year in a single month). She has no contact with the outside world. She is a virgin. She has no human interaction, except for the landlord Simon, and Jeremy the UPS driver, which is through the door and not face to face. The others are her therapist which she speaks to via the web, who provides pills for her to give to her neighbor and landlord to keep him quiet, and her hacker who does her background and computer work. The UPS driver knows to leave the packages at the door and he signs for her. She has all her food delivered, supplies, no car, and has not left her apartment in 6e in three years. All her interaction is via the internet. She is beautiful, smart, sexy, and has money. Jessica has a secret, she has a desire to kill people, and so she is locked in to protect others and herself. She is a recluse and has no family or friends. She has killed before, but why? She has all sorts of online clients, she is sharp and a real business thinker. She makes great money. She has lots of different clients, from doctors to lawyers, men and women—married, single, and from all walks of life with different sexual appetites. You see, she has a past. Something horrible happened (you have to read the book) to find out; and not until something happens presently, and a strange client mentions an innocent little girl named Annie. This could be a girl in need of help. Could this guy be someone’s husband, father, uncle, an upstanding citizen who likes little girls? How would anyone know, except for Jessica. She is bothered by this and begins further investigation. Can this one event cause her to "open the door" and trust one person enough to use their car and get to this little girl in time? An amazing look inside a complex mind of a simple young woman who has a heart, just like anyone else. One of compassion and love; however, tragic events led her to this prison of a life. What happened to her? Torre’s writing is honest and stunning she is funny, witty, sarcastic, provocative, and sexy. From the character development (you are going to love the UPS driver, Jeremy), and Jessica, to the plot planning, building suspense for a climatic ending. You will laugh and cry. Torre examines the thoughts and feelings of her characters and pushes the boundaries, producing a riveting and and satisfying novel. When speaking of the concept of erotic novels, sex, and the stigma attached, reminds me of an older book I read some time ago by Wendy Wax, “Accidents of a Bestseller”, where a character in the book, a bestselling author of erotica and steamy scenes, writing under a pseudonym name. Her best friends did not even know, nor her husband. It all came out years later, and she was a famous minister’s wife—boy did this stir up some of the church members; however, the members were the ones buying the book!. The UPS driver reminded me of my son, formerly worked for UPS during college. When graduating from college, they offered him a driver position and he decided to take it (after all, great stock options, good pay, and great exercise) and he loved it. What is not to love, you get a great work out, nice tan, meet interesting people, he was in the best shape ever, great calf muscles, women customers flirting, and propositions. He had dates every night of the week. After 15 yrs of service, his poor back gave out (not from the women, the packages) and four back surgeries later, gave it up and became a boring regional bank manager. Six years as a bank manager, he says- not the same as the UPS "good ole days." Now less pay, weight gain, more stress, and no dates. So you see, UPS guys have it all! Again, “Brown” wins in Apartment 6e (minus the box cutters). Hope there is a #2 for a series. JDCMustReadBooks Check out Do Not Disturb as we catch up with Deanna. ...more |

Heather Gudenkauf’s LITTLE LIES is a short novella, a prequel for the upcoming riveting LITTLE MERCIES. A story of a social worker, Ellen—a woman balancing her personal and work life as a mother of three, with a husband, and a complex career. Having read an ARC of LITTLE MERCIES (a 5-star winner), prior to LITTLE LIES, immediately purchased the novella, as was so intrigued with the main character, Ellen, and wanted to learn more about her background. LITTLE LIES introduces Ellen, as she is called to assist with an investigation. A child has lost his mother in a brutal murder. The body was found beneath a park statue which is similar to a murder thirteen years ago—with a little boy left behind. Full of suspense, each can be standalone reads; however, highly recommend reading both books, as you will not be disappointed. I love novels featuring social workers, as they are so undervalued, with huge responsibilities— making for an emotional, and gripping novel. Well done! http://judithdcollins.booklikes.com/p... ...more |

Recently discovering talented author, Heather Gudenkauf, after reading her latest book, LITTLE MERCIES, a social worker who finds herself living her own nightmare—a powerful "must read," 5-Star Winner! Every woman, mother, and daughter will relate to this gripping and emotionally charged novel. In addition, would also recommend, LITTLE LIES, a novella which I also found very engaging! Ironically after reading Gudenkauf’s latest two releases, decided to go back to read Book #1 THE WEIGHT OF SILENCE, her debut novel, and work my way through the books I missed. I listened to the audiobook, since I was traveling and found the narrators: Jim Colby, Eliza Foss, Cassandra Morris, Andy Paris, Therese Plummer, and Tony Wardors, very true to the character, each with their own unique voice, making it a little easier to keep up with all the voices. As with another one of my favorite authors, Diane Chamberlain—I just finished her latest ARC #23 The Silent Sister, and then went back to read her debut novel this week (25th anniversary edition); and YES, both Heather and Diane are talented writers. By reading their latest books, and then going back years previously to read their debut, you can see how their writing has matured and changed (even better). This is not to say the first, is not good, as both respective authors received many awards for their debut novels--highly commendable; however, both authors have demonstrated strong growth, and perfected their writing style along the way. (plus, they both write about social workers, which is a special favorite subject of mine)! WEIGHT OF SILENCE begins with the disappearance of two 7-yr old girls, Calli and Petra, as they vanish from their separate homes in the wee hours of a hot Iowa night/morning. They live in an isolated area that is surrounded by woods. Calli Clark is a selective mute -- she hasn't spoken a word since a tragedy she witnessed at age 4. Her best friend, Petra Gregory, is her voice and has protected Callie since they met. Although Callie's silence is not her choice, it is the willful keeping of secrets and lies of omission by all the characters---the events that bring about the unbearable weight of silence. Shifting from past to present with each of the characters—Callie’s experience, Petra her best friend, Martin-Petra’s father, Antonia-Callie’s mother and Ben-Calli’s brother. There is also a voice Deputy Sherriff Louis who had a former relationship with Antonia, before she married Griff. Meanwhile readers learn the secrets of Callie's mother, her brother Ben and Deputy Sheriff Louis--each carry their own thoughts of guilt; things said or left unsaid—each confront as the truths unfold. Petra's father battles his own demons as he confronts the possible loss of a daughter, as he is desperate to find his child. Martin is forced to confront a side of himself he did not know existed beneath his intellectual, professorial demeanor. The audiobook told in voices of each of the five characters, tells the story of a search, and the ghosts and secrets which haunt them. A riveting novel diving deeply into family dynamics and relationships. Looking forward to reading more from one of my new favorite authors! 3.5 Stars http://judithdcollins.booklikes.com/p... ...more |

Heather Gudenkauf's LITTLE MERCIES is Totally Amazing! A book you will want to devour; however, you find yourself savoring every minute of this intense, and heartfelt story! A social worker finds herself living her own nightmare. LITTLE MERCIES is a powerful "must read," 5-Star Winner! Every woman, mother, and daughter will relate to this gripping and emotionally charged novel. Set in Iowa, Ellen and Adam are happily married, with three small children living busy harried lives. Ellen is a loving mother and conscientious in her professional life as a social worker, balancing her life between personal and business, and all the demands which go along with this role. Being a social worker is extremely stressful and one which tragedy occurs daily-she sees firsthand the delicate relationships between children and parents and the devastating effects of neglect. However, in a blink of an eye, a busy morning—a distraction, and an accident occurs, which will forever change the lives of this family. In a different town, Jenny, a ten-year old from Nebraska finds herself alone on a bus, after her alcoholic dad is taken away. She has not experienced an easy life, with one obstacle after another— poverty, abuse, struggles with school, a runaway mother and an unpredictable father. In a town alone, far away from her father, she finds herself alone at a diner, when one special lady shows her kindness, by taking her into her heart and family. Told in alternating perspectives between Ellen and Jenny—offering readers an insight into difficult situations, through the eyes of a guilt-ridden mother and an innocent but determined child. Full of suspense, a chilling tale, so realistic--with twists and turns you will not see coming—these two stories collide for the most powerful and gripping story. There are so many lives connected from the mothers which were former clients of Ellen (Jade), Ellen’s mother, Maudene, (which I loved), and Jenny (you want to cry for her), and Joe (the cop friend). Your heart goes out to Ellen and this family, keeping you turning pages, into the night, to learn the fate of this two families. Social workers and those in a capacity of who work tirelessly to protect children and help families, are often disregarded. Often, we forget that those who spend their lives serving and helping others can also make mistakes, at times with shattering results. This was my first book by Heather Gudenkauf, and was so impressed. She has made it to my favorite author list, and have become an instant fan! I immediately, purchased LITTLE LIES, the e-short story novel, a prequel to LITTLE MERCIES and quickly adding her earlier books to my reading list. A beautifully written novel, with lovable characters you will remember long after the book ends. Fans of Diane Chamberlain and Jodi Picoult, will enjoy LITTLE MERCIES and Heather’s talented writing style. LITTLE MERCIES, offers a great takeaway-grab life; appreciating the little things (little mercies) in life which are precious, as they could be threatened at any moment. This story makes you take notice of little ways in which you can make a difference in the lives of others, by offering your time, kindness, and support in a time of need. Let’s hope for a sequel, as these characters are too good to end! A special thank you to Harlequin MIRA and NetGalley, for an ARC of this remarkable book, in exchange for an honest review. http://judithdcollins.booklikes.com/p... ...more |

Check out my review on the How to Climb th A special thank you to Light Messages Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Check out my review on the How to Climb the Eiffel Tower's backcover and here HOW TO CLIMB THE EIFFEL TOWER by Elizabeth Hein, is edgy, funny, and empowering as one strong woman tries to hide from her abusive past on her own, until a tragedy happens, and gains the courage to love and embrace life in an entirely new way. Set in a small town of fictional Magnuson, the Piedmont area of NC, near Durham. Magnuson’s largest employers are the Ellery Medical Center and the financial services companies. Lara works as an analyst at one of the mineral investment firms. Lara is a funny, smart and a complex young woman. She is independent and lives an isolated life, with no friends, guarding herself and her heart. She is a loner and demands a world of safety, haunted by her horrible abusive childhood. She has no family and buries herself in work, and her obsession with fitness at the gym, keeping a steady routine. She works in a cube at her office, is under-valued, with her boss taking all the credit for her work. (The work stuff is hilarious with her sarcasm and names for her co-workers and the gym scene, a riot!). Lara Blaine believes, that she can hide, from her past by clinging to a rigid routine of work and exercise. She endures her self-imposed isolation until a cancer diagnosis cracks her hard exterior. Lara’s journey through cancer treatment should be the worst year of her life. Instead, it is the year that she learns how to live. She befriends Jane, (in her sixties), another cancer patient who teaches her how to be powerful even in the face of death. (Loved their relationship). Accepting help from the people around her, allows Lara to confront the past and discover that she is not alone in the world. With the support of her new friends, Lara gains the courage to love and embrace life. Like climbing the Eiffel Tower, the year Lara meets Jane is tough, painful, and totally worth it all. The relationship between Jane and Lara is priceless. Her newfound friendship with Vanessa (HR), and Sebastian, she meets at the race, and the dog— totally amazing! Lara’s goal in life is to have personal power. She wants to feel loved and learn how to love; however, she never knew how previously. Climbing the Eiffel Tower begins with a setting on the gym equipment; however, later Jane shows Lara how she needs to climb the real Eiffel Tower in Paris and learn to live life and all it has to offer, by leaving the past behind and not allow it to control her. What a great book! A moving novel of healing, redemption, raw emotion, overcoming adversity, with realistic lovable and flawed characters. I loved the strong women in this book—so impressed, as quite the page-turner and hard to put down. Elizabeth Hein has just made it to my favorite author list. She writes razor sharp, and do not think I have ever laughed so hard! Fans of Jennifer Weiner, Sarah Pekkanen, and Amy Hatvany will devour HOW TO CLIMB THE EIFFEL TOWER. This book is for every woman, young or old. Whether you have an illness, cancer, a survivor, or are perfectly healthy, this book is for you – one of friendship, cancer, loss and love. After reading HOW TO CLIMB THE EIFFEL TOWER, was so blown away, later spent some time reading about the author. I strongly urge you to get to know this special woman. After reading more, this makes me treasure the book even more. She sounds like someone you would want to be BFF with, to tell it like it is honestly; keeping you in stitches laughing. Hats off to Elizabeth, for being a cancer survivor, mother, and talented writer and for giving this special gift to her readers with this incredible, and inspiring novel. On a Personal Note: My mom received the diagnosis of colon cancer and secondary liver cancer the first of this year. She has been in and out of the hospital with other complications and is currently undergoing chemo. She is doing really well, and goes to the gym six days a week. She is an inspiration; however, this book helped me realize you do not always have to talk about the illness as sometimes you just want to have fun, escape for the afternoon, and do small things which make you happy. She so enjoys going to the Y and visiting with all her friends. As Jane says, “Make sure you leave plenty of time to eat croissants, and drink lots of wine too, live the whole experience, not just the hard parts.” Well Done, Very Deserving of a 5 Star++, and looking forward to reading more from this new-found talented author! PS Loved the cover and the titles of all the chapters – another special touch. Judith D. Collins Must Read Books About the Author (all the good authors wind up in NC!) Elizabeth Hein is a mother, author, and cancer survivor. She grew up in Massachusetts and now lives in Durham, North Carolina. She writes women's fiction with a bit of a sharp edge. She is fascinated by how friendship and human connection can help a person through the most difficult moments in their lives. When not writing, she is trying to raise two young women and a husband. http://elizabethhein.com/ ...more |

Stephen King’s MR. MERCEDES is a dark, psycho suspense detective thriller, starting with a man driving a stolen Mercedes into a field of job seekers waiting to enter a job fair, leaving behind a pile of dead bodies and injuring more. Months later, retired cop Bill Hodges receives a threatening anonymous letter from someone who describes himself as the perp, promising to kill again on an even more maniacal scale. Two motor patrol cops found the Mercedes and was traced to Olivia Trelawney, a widow who lost her wealthy husband to a heart attack. But the person who stole the car and massacred the people could not be traced, and the case remained unsolved. It came to be known as the City Center Massacre and the perpetrator was nicknamed the Mercedes Killer. Hodges's talented and eccentric assistants unravel Brady's convoluted computer records revealing when he intends to drive a wheelchair strapped with explosives into a concert arena jam-packed with screaming teenyboppers. King indicated earlier, he was writing a crime novel about a retired policeman being taunted by a murderer, while working title Mr. Mercedes and inspired by a true event about a woman driving her car into a McDonald's restaurant –and started it prior to the Boston Marathon bombings. King fans will love it, as will hand it to him…..the disturbing picture of evil Brady and his nasty mom was definitely chilling, to say the least. “Once upon a simpler time, before apps, iPads, Samsung Galaxies, and the world of blazing-fast 4G, weekends were the busiest days of the week at Discount Electronix. Now the kids who used to come in to buy CDs are downloading Vampire Weekend from iTunes, while their elders are surfing eBay or watching the TV shows they missed on Hulu.” ― Stephen King, Mr. Mercedes Definitely recommend reading Mr. Mercedes (Bill Hodges Trilogy #1) prior to reading Finders Keepers (Bill Hodges Trilogy #2). Liked #2 much more - intense, intriguing! SDMS ...more |
