This book lived up to my high expectations after having read (and thoroughly enjoyed) the first one in the series 'Woman Last Seen'.
I am delighted that the author decided to pen this continuation, because I was not ready to leave Kylie, Mark, Daan, Fiona, Ollie and Seb. I REALLY wanted (needed?) to know what was going to happen to each of them.
I have two words for the author... [image] Both read and listened to, and I give a slight edge to the audiobook.

• I did not care for how you initially had no idea who these characters were, nor what was happening. • I also didn’t like how much the story jumped around in time. • I thought the story was repetitious, and it dragged. • I thought the second part of the book was better than the first. • Had this not been a book club book I would have given it up well before the I ever got to the second half. • I could not understand why (view spoiler)[ Edie kept the secret as long as she did. It was cruel. (hide spoiler)]

My favorite part of the book was the Historical Note section at the end. ”The events set out in this novel, while a work of fiction, are closely based on the sinking of British evacuee ship, SS City of Benares, in the mid-Atlantic on 17 September 1940.”
Both read and listened to, and preferred the hard copy as I wanted to be able to skim through some of it.

I really thought this was going to be a 5 star book. It had won the GoodReads Choice Award for Best Fiction of 2023, there was a lot of positive buzz I really thought this was going to be a 5 star book. It had won the GoodReads Choice Award for Best Fiction of 2023, there was a lot of positive buzz around it, and most of the reviews were glowing. Alas, it was not to be.
The novel started out strongly, and I was thoroughly engrossed in it. About halfway through, I started to REALLY dislike Juniper (yes, I know that I was supposed to), and got tired of her total distain for everyone and everything. The story devolved mostly into boring repetitiveness, and I couldn’t wait for the story to be over. It was a slog to finish it.
I cannot believe that this was considered the best novel of 2023.
