I used to follow Captain Marvel's comics closely, but fell off in recent years (pre-Civil-War-II, notably), but with the movie and FCBD I was excited to get back on the train. But this story... just doesn't ever seem to have a story. Who/what is Bean? Why doesn't the universal translator work on her? Is a single conversation in a bar going to salvage Carol's friendship with Jess even though it seems like the philosophical disagreements of CWII would make for far deeper rifts than that, but I read summaries, not the books, I admit. (Also Jess mentioned spit-up... how long has that baby been a baby???). I just kept waiting for the questions to stop arising and start getting answered and they kind of never did.
Also, and I get that I'm one of about four people who cares... but HLA markers are an actual thing-- molecules that are on the surface of literally every human cell-- so having taken *a lot* of immunology that whole "explanation" was not just technobabbly, but actively confusing because I had to ignore what I know about that phrase!
I still like Carol, the art was decent, and it was entertaining enough, but I'm not exactly sprinting out to get volume 2 is what I'm saying. Maybe I'll just go back and read KSD's run again....more

Not super keen that the new artist decided to slim-down Doreen and give all the women basically the same body shape, I gotta be honest. But outside of that I have no complaints about the art change....more
The art is the best part. I think Mighty Thor may have been the most consistently beautifully drawn comic I am going to miss the Hel out of this book.
The art is the best part. I think Mighty Thor may have been the most consistently beautifully drawn comic series I know of. That alone will bring me back for rereads for ages to come.
And the story gets back on track, probably because the end was in sight, so this volume is much more streamlined than the previous, more meandering hardcover.
If I have any complaints it's that the War of the Realms storyline is ongoing, now without Mighty Thor. I personally would have preferred to have that plot wrapped up along with Jane's story, but I understand there are more Thors in the universe and they need things to do in their books.
I'm sad that Mighty Thor was always intended to be a temporary series, but this is a fitting ending and I very much enjoyed the ride.

If you're going to do throwback stories, embrace the batshit. And that's definitely what Team Squirrel Girl have done here. I'm not sure who decides which characters get to cameo but I had no idea how much I needed a SG-Drax teamup until now. Hint: it's A LOT.
And then once the hurricane of strange passes (PS huge bonus points for the brief Machine Man cameo), suddenly we get the amazingly touching and thoughtful single-issue story of Doreen and Nancy in hypertime. What a beautiful way to bring Erica Henderson's time on the series to a close. I'm going to miss her work!...more

The offhanded drops of names for some of Ripley's siblings were fantastic.
The remaining story was sweet and pleasant and I liked all the different-looking merfolk, but I agree with many of the reviews here that it just wasn't as strong as some other volumes. It also didn't seem to progress the overall story or mythology, though character growth for April was nice to see.
Regardless, a pleasant way to pass some time and still a remarkable series that I will always recommend....more

I wish the sponsorship product placement was a little less intrusive, but I also get that sponsorship helps publish the book. I like how this book captures the intensity of Lunella's feelings, as well as the inability to see beyond her own nose that is so characteristic of kids, and particularly gifted kids. It's not my favorite Marvel book, but I'm excited that it exists. I'm betting in a couple years Moon Girl will be one of my kids' first comics....more

Maybe it's not fair of me to expect so much but the book has been so good for so long that this volume feels like a pretty big let-down. I had to reread parts of it several times just to make sure I hadn't missed something that would make it better.
I could forgive the first story for being a voting informational pamphlet it a) it had come out before election day, and b) it had maybe not gone quite so farfetched with the outcome of the plot. The second story has some potential with regard to privacy and digital information (and some good character development for the supporting cast) but the ending is just... bad. I enjoyed the third story, about Bruno's adventures at school in Wakanda but it was just a one-off and I'm a sucker for anything Wakanda.
I'm hoping this was just an off day for the Ms Marvel creative team. I get that every issue can't be perfect but, fair or not, I just plain expect more from this book....more
Solid 4 stars, maybe higher, for the story and the art. Minus a star for padding the length of the book with excerpts of three non-consecutive issues Solid 4 stars, maybe higher, for the story and the art. Minus a star for padding the length of the book with excerpts of three non-consecutive issues of New Avengers for some reason? Perhaps if I had been reading New Avengers I would appreciate the reminder of Black Panther's part in all of that, but as it was, it meant the story proper finished far before I expected, and was filled with what largely amounted to nonsense (at least to me personally). Disappointing, but not the fault of Black Panther or Coates or the rest of his team....more

The overall plot of this volume was maybe a little less inspired than previous volumes, but it's the little support stuff that makes USG a must-pull for me. The actual lessons in computer history! The tiny alt text on most pages! Basically everything about Nancy! I continue to be here for all of it....more

I hate it when my star rating reflects more about me than the book. I'm pretty sure this book is quite good! But there's a lot going on that touches a lot of my particular exposed nerves, so I can't say that I exactly enjoyed reading it.
I like the narrative framing, and the math and literature references. I'm a little annoyed that there's some very specific events foreshadowed (is it foreshadowing when they tell you what's going to happen eventually?) that must come in a later volume, as it makes this volume feel foreshortened. That's due to the nature/pace/schedule/business of trade paperbacks I'm sure, but holding a bound volume that doesn't have a complete arc isn't my super favorite thing.
Anyway, highly recommended for those of a philosophical bent and who don't need to be cheered up....more

I really liked her as Oracle, and she was one of the only wheelchair users in comics. I'm still not *thrilled* about it, but after reading both Batgirl and BoP Rebirth titles, I can at least say that the stories are strong. I like that her past as Oracle is acknowledged, and the way they treated "New Oracle" (or Fauxricle, as they're hilariously called in the book) has promise. I love seeing the Birds back together, and I hope there's some Lady Blackhawk in our future.......more

Basically, it felt very Preacher-esque to me, in the sense that I found it a little much for me personally, but even through my mild squick I could easily see how many/most readers would welcome the darker tone. It's obvious in the premise that this isn't going to be some golden-age hero story, so I knew roughly what I was in for, and it just happened to be a little past my comfort zone. The writing and art were great, absolutely nothing to complain about, and I'd highly recommend this book to anyone with a less-tender stomach than I have....more

Given the theme of the latter issues it might have made more sense if the "legend" segments were more about Mjolnir-- I'm not sure two entire issues were necessary to set up the dragon blood idea, but maybe there will be more payoff in the future.
