At first, I wasn’t a fan of Aidens POV, found it boring but it got better.
Honestly, the writing was okay but realistically nothing really happened other than (small spoiler) the king’s death at the start. It felt like it should have been a prequel, because worldbuilding was 90% of the story. It ends ambiguously and with no real progress through the book.
Book synopsis:
Iona, half fae, half goblin, is King Jeric’s head guard and secret lover. Goblins are hated fae and basically slaves. Ionia is then framed for king Jeric’s death. On her escape from the mansion, she’s poisoned. Enter the handy healer Aiden, who just happens to find her crashed on the only road to his cabin.
He supports goblins and helps heal them. He can see ghosts and is being harassed by King Jeric about Iona. He finally heals her, she kills some shoulders and tries to kill Princess Mariana and the assassin (who really killed the king) but saves aiden instead in a totally shocking move we didn’t see coming…not. And that’s it? Like nothing else happens????? ...more

Sardelle wakes up to men digging her out of a hole in a mine…300 years later.
Sardelle is a sorcerer and has a spunky soulblade, Jaxi, which is deeply buried under the collapsed mountain hold of her people.
In the 300 years, the area has now become a prison. As a punishment, (cocky LI) Colonel Ridge Zirkander has been reassigned Commanding officer. And boyyy, he isn’t happy with how terribly and immorally the prison had been ran.
Instant sparks fly between the two.
Sardelle helps Ridge find these mysterious crystals ( which turn out to be what Saradelle’s people use to use as lightbulbs, of course) and he helps get Jaxi back.
Throughout, they fight off attacks from the Cofah people.
After a month, General Nax and his daughter arrive to access Ridge. He has small dick energy (SDE)and hates Ridge for no reason. It’s finally revealed that Sardelle is a sorcerer which SDE Nax, in his bigoted ways, takes deep offence to and would happily kill Sardelle right there and then if she didn’t know more locations of the crystals.
While Sardelle is escaping her cell (with help from Ridge), the last big fight scene happens. Ridge gets a really old, rusty, dusty fighter jet (called dragon fliers) to help from above. Sardelle pulls a sleeping beauty and tricks the Cofah’s sorcerer into thinking he’s better and caused her to pass out from his attack to get him on the ground. But nah my weirdly contrasting friend, home girls Sardelle and Jaxi are too strong for your weak ass moves.
Sardelle takes one of the hot air balloons to escape.
In the epilogue, we see them coming back together at his cabin with the hint that she would be welcome helping him and his OG flier squadron… maybe in the future books.
I really love all the dynamics of the characters! Their banter is perfect. The way their history is bought up and not just info dumped on you. The world building is amazing. It also moves between Sardelle and Ridges’ POV in an easy and effortless way....more

It was VERY obviously the mailman. It was a mentioned about half way and it was the ONLY difference in routine. And every time they were like “we have nothing”, I was just screaming in my head IT WAS OBVIOUSLY THE MAILMAN. Bloody hell. A lot of parts just kinda felt like filler to drag it out.
So I couldn’t give it three stars. But I did like reading it despite wanting to pull my hair out at parts.
Also feel like the author came up with the crime side of things and was just like hmm how do I make it different and just stuck the siren and werewolf thing in. The two sides aren’t very cohesive. The paranormal side just randomly gets mentioned every now and then. I feel like this might be better in the main books.
They finally have sex at the end which is meh. Personally, thought it was better for them to not but I’m guessing so there’ll be more sexual tension in the main books.
But overall, it’s a good prequel. I think the other books would be good/ better but I’m not vibing the prices....more

Jane opens up a shop to help people with her magic. Her family/ coven, the mages and the dragons are happy about this and try to get her to close.
Things happen but it also kinda felt like things weren’t happening. Also, things were mentioned as if they had happened in previous books in the series so we should know what they’re talking about but it’s the first book in the series?
* spoiler ahead* The chemistry between Jane and the love interest feels a little sudden/random at the start but plays out with a small bit of spice. I wasn’t happy with the way it ended, feels like it’s just to the whole sexual tension/ can’t act on it/ forbidden love trope in further books....more

The Male MC is a lion shifter and a dick at the start, the story line is meh and has a bad instalove. But, there’s nothing overly bad about it.

The start is terrible. While also over describing everyone and everything.
But thankfully, the writing warmed up and the MC became more likeable and by the end it was okay. ...more

It really needs edited to correct all the spelling mistakes, missing words, changing format and crazy grammar. It also feels like paragraphs are out of order? It’s weird.
The storyline isn’t much better to be honest. The start is confusing, so you have to try piece together what’s already happened. MC acts like werewolves/ supernaturals aren’t a thing for ages and then just drops a few lines like oh the town is full of them. But not in a fun way but in an oh shit I need to add this to the storyline and so I’ll add it here and will just act like that’s always been the case.
I understand the idea of a youngish (24/25? Obviously young but older for most of these kind of stories) woman from a very small town being pretty sheltered but this takes it to the extreme and makes her naive to the point it’s unrealistic and you’re just like of saying come on.
Also has insta-love in it, not in a good way, and without any rhyme or reason to why the switch other than he had basically been polite to her..?

At the start it was giving the usual adopted girl with a hidden dramatic supernatural destiny. BUT it was handled really well. Normally it’s mentioned straight away or it’s easy to guess but this built up the characters and the world while dipping its toes into the destiny arch until it was ready to be reviled. And I really appreciated that. It made a big difference to the quality of the story. ...more
