I have liked all the Gamache novels and this one included. I have to say that this one ran a different route, at least in my mind, than most of the previous books. Not a bad thing once I figured out what was happening. Nice touch that the author put in references to several real historical people/things. And I appreciated the acknowledgments that helped explain that. Hope there will be more Gamache....more

Having said that, this one just seemed a little off and I can't say exactly why. The characters were the usual interesting and complex people, Three Pines was there, but for some reason this one just didn't give me the same feeling of wonder that other books in the series have done. I'll look forward to the next one....more

No problem telling which time line you are in thanks to the author making it very hot at trial and cold, snowy, sleeting during investigation. And as usual, Gamache has a plan that everyone thinks is stupid until he unleashes it and then, okay, not so stupid. I only wish she'd bring out more than one book a year....more

I'd have to rate it near the bottom of the books in the series even though Three Pines still calls me and the characters are always inviting me back. It was much less a mystery than many of the books in this series and only held my interest because of the characters those of us who regularly read Ms Penny have come to care about. The ending was less than satisfactory, for me, especially after such a great ending in the last book. Still, I would recommend this to Gamache fans. You can't hit a home run every at bat. In the end probably one of my least favorite books in this series....more
