Reviews say lyrical writing and I wholeheartedly agree! The story is a slow burn, character study. But with so much to say, and said in the most gorgeously crafted sentences. And the names. They just flow and are so lovely, and pleasant. I loved this story, and the characters! But also, honestly, I loved the way it was written. The words, the way they were crafted to slot snugly together in the most pleasing way. I could have read a story that was three times longer and still wish there was more at the end. You can see the world that Ms. Fletcher imagined and it is one in which I would be delighted to dwell in. Highly recommended for readers who enjoy a well crafted sentence, a particularly pleasing cadence to the story, with characters who are far from cookie cutter and a plot that slowly evolves and reveals itself in the most perfectly languid and striptease-esque way....more

It’s about families and relationships and how we live our lives and the choices we make. It’s about love with its many facets and relationships and finding out who we are and what life is all about.Just so much. It’s a tad different than what her last few books have been like, but not in an integral way, just the storyline or set up I guess. All her amazing characterizations, the unspooling of romance and emotions, the vibrant dialogue, and the way she creates the setting so clearly you feel like it’s a memory rather than a place in a book, is all still front and center. I loved it, and the secondary story within a story was so engaging. Definitely a 5 ⭐️ read for me....more

The story was well written and kept my attention with a plot that was intriguing. It also had a lovely setting - Scotland -, and characters that felt real and likable and made you feel something about their life story. It's a drama about a life lived, about family and best friends, mistakes and regrets, love and forgiveness, starting over and carrying on. And it's somewhat like a fictional memoir-if that's even a thing. I was invested in the story, the secrets, the revelations and aha moments, and the mundane and exhilarating process of living that we all must go through and that was told here in such a compelling way. This kind of gave off the same vibes as Fellowship Point by Alice Elliott Dark, which I really enjoyed as well. ...more

It is difficult to pinpoint which aspect of the story made it so wonderful - the subject, the characters, the mystery, the glimpse into this historical era, - but as a package, it's so, so good! I loved the main characters and how this particular time in history was made so accessible to the reader. If you look at this and think "1700's, mid-wifery, winter tale - meh" think again! It has so much to offer. I highly recommend!...more

A beautifully written story with characters so real and human that your heart both fills with love and simultaneously breaks for them.
Devastating the reader with its searing and brutal depiction of a near future where climate change, human greed, and indifference have erased most of the animal kingdom, it’s also a portrayal of how much we need even the seemingly useless creatures not only for survival, but also to remind us of the pureness and beauty of our magnificent earth.
It’s about brokenness, and an endless search for the family and love lost as a child, but finding it in the places and people where it’s least expected. It’s really so many stories, all entwined into one beautiful and emotionally fulfilling journey. It’s an adventure to find and follow the last of a species on their annual migration, the exploration of a marriage, the slow unspooling of a woman’s quest from childhood to an adult searching for what she’d lost but also for the part of her story she never had. It’s about dreams, and the rawness of life and love, and the choices we make from feelings of both fear and hope.
In essence, this is a devastatingly gorgeous and heart breaking love story. For creatures, family, partners, and against all odds, for oneself....more

But oh my, I really loved these characters and the story and the town! I’m not a small town girl, and small town dynamics are definitely not my style. However, I could live in a town if it was like Broken Wheel and if Sara and Tom and John and Grace and Caroline and George and Claire and Sophie and Alan and Carl and Josh and even Jen were there to be my neighbors and friends. What a story. Highly recommended!!...more
