The Faithless turned out to be better than The Unbroken. At this rate, maybe book three will hit five stars?
You can tell the author improved, not just writing wise, but character wise as well. I, a Luca hater, started warming up to her a teeny tiny little bit during the course of the book, so it's possible I'll actually like her in the next one. Who would've thought?
That's not to say that she stopped making stupid decisions though, just putting that out there.
And I'm still not on board the Luca - Touraine ship, sorry. My opinion hasn't changed one bit, they shouldn't be together and there's zero chemistry between them. But as individual characters, they're interesting to follow, especially Touraine.
We got some new PoVs as well, I liked getting to know those characters better.
This one had less action than the first, but I didn't mind that, the politics were the star of the show and not hard to keep track of. The plot was better too, and I'd like to think that I know where it's going to go in The Sovereign, but maybe I'm wrong and it'll go in a completely different direction.
I wish we got to see more of the magic system in action, I'm assuming it's going to be a huge thing in the next installment, but we only got a few crumbs here.
Now, what bugged me is basically how easy everything was at the end, it's not that I want the characters to suffer more than necessary, but when I was reading it I was like "and that's it?", there should've been a little more. It's hard to explain more of what without spoiling.
I would still recommend this series to people who are looking for some underrated fantasy reads, maybe it won't blow you away (or maybe it will, in which case yay), but you'll have a solid story to keep you entertained....more

My favourite was definitely Rust though, I liked him from his first appearance and hoped he'd have more page time. (view spoiler)[I also shipped him with Quinn which was silly in retrospect, but at the time they seemed like they'd be good together. (hide spoiler)]
I adored Quinn as well, her relationship with her dad, and the way she took charge and wasn't afraid to fight back when it counted.
I didn't predict anything, I was vaguely suspicious of one character, but I truly had no idea who was behind it all. That whole thing was pretty clever too, (view spoiler)[young vs old people, I mean (hide spoiler)]. I kept being surprised at every subsequent reveal, and the vibes were immaculate.
The one thing that kinda came out of nowhere was (view spoiler)[Rust & Cole's relationship, the only time we see them interacting was at the party and my spidey sense didn't go off, I really thought they used to be friends and now weren't, nothing deeper. I might have to go back and reread that part to see if I missed something (hide spoiler)].
I'm glad I managed to read this before seeing the movie, it was a lot better. If you are planning on seeing it, please read this first, because the movie removed a lot of the backstory, and changed Quinn's personality (and her dad's too). ...more

I think in part this is due to the side PoVs being cut down to only the most necessary bits which I'm fully on board with.
I love how Lin and Jovis grow as characters during the course of the book, and how their relationship develops. I had an inkling at the beginning of book one that they'd probably end up together and it seems I was right.
Melphi and Thrana were the stars of the book though, as expected. In just about every scene where I teared up, it had something to do with those two (and Lozhi and Shark as well). I just love them so much.
I wasn't very attached to Phalue and Ranami before, but they grew on me here. Their married life is so cute and I also really like the new addition(s) to the family.
As for Sand (now Nisong)...she annoys me, but what's funny is that what I dislike about her, I love about Lin.
Nisong does not give up, even when she should, she will not. And that's frustrating because she's kind of the villain and I want everyone to be happy, but she keeps ruining it.
I'm not sure if she deserves a redemption arc, somewhere down the road. If only she made the right choice at the end...
There were a few plot twists, one of them I definitely did not see coming. It was really good.
What I also enjoyed was all the islands we visited with Lin and Jovis and the characters we met on them. The world building stays consistently interesting.
We also got an expansion of the magic system, the Alanga magic system, which will most likely grow even more. There was a little less focus on bone shard magic in favour of it, but I trust it'll balance itself out in book three.
All in all, this was a great book. I'm expecting a five billion star conclusion to the series.

TaI've had this book on my tbr for years, and I've been looking forward to reading it just as long, but I don't think the audiobook was the way to go.
Tanya Tagaq narrates her own book, there's even throat singing in between chapters, but something about her delivery didn't work for me.
It wasn't just that though, I literally started this book and was disturbed in the first few chapters. It would be fine if it was just that one time, but then it continued throughout, and it felt like that was done on purpose. Like, I'm sure the same story could've been told without being so graphic and including certain scenes we shall not be mentioning.
It was not an easy listen for sure, and I can't really recommend this to anyone, but I also think it's a book that deserves to be read, but also maybe don't read it if you don't have a strong stomach, but maybe do, but also be careful & heed the trigger warnings......more

First thing's first. I do not hate Kingston anymore, but don't like him either.
He did improve a lot in Rejection, but he was still pulling his old tricks and I am not having it. If he isn't 10000001% devoted to Sunday without question in the third book, I'm going to throw him a stick so far, he'll never be able to come back with it.
NO BUT SERIOUSLY, he let his pack members get inside his head. You couldn't sniff the meddlers out, could you Kingston?
Judging by the blurb of the next book he's going to be very present so I'm expecting he'll finally grow on me then. For now, he's still my least favourite. But, I will admit that some of the scenes with him and Sunday were hot, like the one where he thought she was dead, then she wasn't and you'll need to read the book to see what happened later.
Oh, and Alek's book is next, which has me super excited. I'm wondering how that will go, considering how this one ended. But we didn't just get Kingston and Sunday. We also got Noah, Alek and Caleb when the moment called for it so we'll probably get their PoVs again even when it's not their turn.
Alek was a sweetheart here as expected. I'm happy he joined the group officially, now we just need Father dearest to get over himself and under someone else *cough* Sunday *cough*.
SPEAKING OF, THE FATHER CALEB SCENES WERE AMAZING. He won't steal Alek's spot as my favourite, but they can share right? They share everything else, so why not that too? Exactly. It's decided.
I can't wait to listen to the audiobook later, and yes, feel free to blame Caleb for that, it's all his fault.
Finally Noah...pretty much the same opinion as I had in Obsession. He was gone even longer this time, and eventually appeared when Sunday needed him the most so props for that. ALTHOUGH, it seems he'll be gone yet again in Possession, at least emotionally and sir. Sir. SIR. If you don't stop your shenanigans and be there for Sunday no matter what, I'm going to start giving you the Kingston treatment. Mhm.
Oops I almost forgot to mention Sunday, the reason these guys exist (AND THEY BETTER NOT FORGET IT!). She found her wolf! I'm proud. But also kinda sad because of something that happens later. It's a trope I like, but I wish she got to shift a few more times and enjoy her wolfy freedom before getting into that situation where she can't do it anymore until it's over.
And her mother...still a mess, but in an insane way. Is she alive? Is she dead? I don't know, but she's creepy. There's an extra mystery there, one that will be resolved soon.
AND STILL NO CROMBIE! WHERE OH WHERE IS HE??? I miss him.

I DO NOT DISLIKE KINGSTON ANYMORE, EVERYONE CHEER!!! He finally proved himself enough by being there for Sunday during the whole book, so what the hell, he can stay.
Possession went in a slightly different direction than I was expecting, especially in the Alek department. My poor, poor Alek.
Something, or should I say someONE happens, and you know what? I suddenly don't like that person anymore. THEY MAY HAVE HAD VALID REASONS TO DO IT, BUT THEY SHOULD'VE KNOWN BETTER! I'M SO MAD AT THEM!
Aside from that, everything was fun, Sunday had her guys to take care of her during her growing pregnancy and they also helped to stop assassination attempts, you know, normal everyday stuff.
I should not be excited for what comes next, which is a war, BUT I'M EXCITED ANYWAY. I think it's going to be awesome, hopefully no one important dies. And I'd love to see Novasgardians participating to save the world too.
NOW, NOW, NOW, something I'm sure you've all been waiting for as much as I have, CROMBIE FINALLY APPEARS! Like 70% in, and only for a short while, BUT HE'S BACK. I'm so happy to see him still kicking in questionable places. This better not be the last we see of him, I need him to cause some trouble.
And I'm delighted to see dear Heather lives on. She hasn't been forgotten, and is now forever immortalised with a mention in book three. Go Heather.
THE ENDING HAD ME SCARED FOR MY LIFE TO BE HONEST WITH YOU, SO THE AUTHORS CAN EXPECT MY THERAPY BILLS. I WAS JUST SITTING THERE IN MY LITTLE BED, READING MY LITTLE BOOK AND THEN BAM, THE ENDING??? IT'S CRUEL TO LEAVE US HANGING LIKE THAT.

HAPPY RELEASE DAY TO OBSESSION! GO GET IT ON AMAZON!!!

Sunday Fallon is a wolf shifter who can't shift, sent to Ravenscroft University by her grandfather in order to find her wolf. What she finds instead is a witchy best friend and four supernatural men who all want a taste of her. All of that, and a side of danger to go with, because poor Sunday just can't catch a break.
OKAY FIRST OF ALL, I LOVE SUNDAY. I think she's written perfectly and accurately to what her background is. By that I mean, her family made her feel unwanted and like a disappointment for not being able to shift, and she struggles with getting over that during the book.
She becomes more confident in her abilities as the book goes on, and I like that it's not just because of the men orbiting her, but on her own too.
As for the men, I already have a favourites or ranking list if you will, subject to change at any time, but for now it's as follows:
Alek > Caleb > Noah > Kingston.
I wasn't sure how this would go, if it would be one book per one mate, or if they'd all somehow get together in creative ways because there were certain scenes that made me think the latter, but generally it's the former, with some scenes with the other mates sprinkled through.
So this book was about Noah and Sunday's story and the next will be about her and Kingston's story I believe? Anyway, Noah was alright, I don't have any complaints about him, but he didn't grow on me as much as Alek and Caleb did.
He kept "ghosting" Sunday and she forgave him every time, and while it wasn't as bad as what Kingston did, it didn't help his case in my eyes.
NOW KINGSTON, I straight up hate him, I'm sorry. I hate him so much that I'm tempted to knock off a star just for him. But I won't.
Sunday rejected him 7 years ago and he's still not over it, which I, as a regular grudge holder can understand and relate to, but the way he treats her because of it is so annoying. YOU ARE NOT A VICTIM KINGSTON, STOP ACTING LIKE IT!!
He even goes and does something which I won't spoil, but which is unforgivable. Yes, technically he and Sunday weren't on the best of terms or together then, but that doesn't mean you can just go and do THAT. Nope.
So my mate ranking in actuality is literally every man ever in between Noah and Kingston. He better improve in the next book, or else he's staying at the bottom for life.
Moving on to Caleb, there should've been more of him, but I get why there wasn't, his time will come. There's a mystery to his motives (and Alek's too) and he seems to be connected to someone (or something?) powerful. Also, he delivered the best line in the whole book that made me laugh and love him from the get go.
The line was related to people mispronouncing his last name by the way, you'll know it when you get to it. A+, chef's kiss.
And finally, Alek. I'm 100% biased with him, because I love his parents Nord and Lina, and he's exactly what a kid of theirs would be like. He deserved more page time too, my baby. He's the nicest of the bunch, and I hope he stays that way.
It's really smart that this wasn't his book actually, because the rest could never compare. I SAID WHAT I SAID.
I also love Moira, and that she likes girls. I am now an advocate for a Moira spinoff on the side, she earned it with her awesomeness.
You know who I feel really bad for though? Heather. We saw her in one scene, but the other characters couldn't get her name right and called her Hailey, Heidi, Harley and Hannah before circling back to Heather. Justice for Heather! Nothing was her fault!
Lastly, I need to see more of the classes. I love books set at magical/supernatural academies and I will read every single one without hesitation, but a lot of them have this flaw - they don't show enough of the classes.
Obsession did show some, for which I'm grateful for, but like I said I NEED MORE. I'm a little scared that the classes could be forgotten with the impeding doom in the background, hopefully that won't be the case.
P. S. A little birdie in the shape of a Mate Games adjacent book chart told me that Crombie would be in this series and I AM THRILLED! It seems I finally got my Crombie spinoff wish, even if he won't be a mate.
He didn't show up yet though, unfortunately. When he does I'm expecting him to do so with a bang and cause some chaos.

If you told me Bethany Baptiste put out 5+ books before this one I'd believe you. I'm obsessed.
From the start it was clear the author put a lot of thought and care into the worldbuilding. I could visualise everything perfectly.
The magic system is well developed, and magic (in this case brewing potions) has a cost. Venus could pretty much die at any second if the potion she brews is strong enough, and if she doesn't, she needs a long time to recover. If you like your magic with consequences this is the read for you!
I really liked how detailed the potions were as well, the different types of love potions and the illustrations and recipes at the back of the book.
The story was very engaging, I found myself unwilling to stop reading, needing to read just a bit more, and a bit more.
Character wise, Venus was of course my fav, but I also loved Patches, Leap, uncle Bram, Janus and Tyrell. I also thought Nisha and Matrika were written well too. Presley is the only one that I didn't really connect to, because we saw so little of them on page.
It was easy to root for Venus and her family, and hate the baddies, except there's so many twists you're not sure who the baddies REALLY are. I can say that I didn't see the final villain coming at all.
The romance was a smaller part of the book, it was more plot focused and I don't mind that. Though if we had more of it, maybe I'd feel like I know Presley better.
As for the rep, I'm really looking forward to seeing the ace one in the final version. I saw the author's review on Goodreads mentioning it, and I'm a bit sad it wasn't in the arcs, but what can you do? Still, we got bi & non binary rep!!
The Poisons We Drink works as a standalone, because just about everything is wrapped up by the end, but I'd still love a sequel.
Read this if you like witches, the revenge trope, political intrigue, interesting storylines and believable characters.

The writing style waI had semi-high expectations for The Killing Moon and it did not meet them. But at least I can say I finally read a Jemisin book.
The writing style was my biggest issue and it hindered my enjoyment of the book. It didn't work for me at all.
I was also a bit confused a lot of the time, not just in the beginning. And I didn't care about any of the characters except the Prince in a few scenes.
The pacing started off slow and it never really picked up. But, the storyline wasn't bad. I just wish everything else didn't make it harder to get through.
I might still give Jemisin's other books a try in the future, perhaps they'll suit me better. ...more

I first fell in love with her writing in Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry which became my favourite book, and now I fell in love all over again.
There is not a single thing wrong with this, except the fact that Dom exists and I hate his guts. You can definitely save me a spot in the Dom punching line.
I love how Monique grows during the story. She goes from defining herself as Dom's girlfriend, to knowing her worth without him, and she makes lifelong friends while tackling vaginismus.
I knew about vaginismus before, but I had no idea vaginal dilators were a thing, so I learned something new.
There's also the relationship with "parental units" which I think was handled nicely. At the start you're like "oh no, they're those types of parents" but as the book goes on you see that they're also not who they seem.
AND THE ROMANCE? A+ AGAIN! Did I doubt it? Absolutely not. Obviously relating to Reggie, not the egghead.
And and, there's LGBT rep, not just once but twice. And it's prominent characters too. Most important of all, the inclusion feels natural. Literally everything about Confessions of an Alleged Good Girl feels natural and I'm so happy about it.
You know what to do after this, go buy the book now and read it ASAP. ...more

This was the first book in the series that I read as an ebook, instead of as an audiobook because I wanted to finish it quicker. I don't think that was a mistake exactly, but this series is a much better experience through audio.
The problem was that things got resolved wayyy too quick and easy. It failed to make me care because I knew that the happy ending was just around the corner.

The In some ways this was a filler book, and in others it wasn't. I loved it almost as much as the first one, but it still didn't hit a full 5 stars.
The main reason is that I mostly cared about the Noon and Tor chapters and wanted to get everyone else's chapters out of the way so I could have more of the two of them.
Relating to that, I hated Arnia. She officially surpassed Hestillion as my most hated character. Especially when she tried to (view spoiler)[get between Noon and Tor, NO YOU DON'T ARNIA, NOT ON MY WATCH (hide spoiler)].
And Hestillion, she did her own thing for the majority of the book, so I didn't feel like I had to spend energy on hating her, but I'm sure she'll take back her number one spot in book three unless if someone more annoying comes along.

I love that the world building is constantly being expanded on, but never info dumpy. The mythology of this world continues to fascinate me time and time again.

If yoI fell in love with this book, plain and simple. I didn't want it to end and I (gasp) didn't even crank up the speed to 2x until the last third.
If you know me then you know I listen to most audios at 2.5x speed, sometimes faster sometimes slower but that's kind of my sweet spot. But occasionally there's a book where I get so immersed that I want to extend my listening experience and I forget to speed it up.
This was one of those. I listened to almost half at 1.25x speed and then I was like WHO AM I? Because for me, most narrators talk too slow and my chipmunk brain needs speed. But yeah, I was loving it too much to notice.
Also the narrators did a fantastic job, especially with the accents (even Jordy's weird neither here nor there one), I'd definitely listen to something narrated by them again.
I love watching trashy reality shows, not all of them (I've never seen the Bachelor for example, which this is kinda based on), but enough to know the vibes were perfect in this book.
I loved the drama, the (eventual) friendship between all the girls and Maya & Sky's love story. I also loved everyone as characters, except Jordy (duh).
My one and only compliant is that there were times when Maya and Sky's PoVs were very similar and I had to figure out who was talking, the narrator voices were also similar and I thought there was only one until just now when I started this review. But other than that it was excellent and I'd read it again....more

The whole premise was very fun and I loved the setting, the shop names and the characters.
Another thing that had me convinced is the writing style and how easy it was to jump right into the world.
The point where it started to go downhill was the introduction of the witch hunter. I wanted all the fluff and none of the rough. But by the end, I felt the opposite.
It was as if the witch hunter came to cause a scene and then stayed in the background the entire time. I really wanted that to be resolved, now I'll have to wait until the next book.
Then we have Titus. His whole personality is cute, and that's not what this is about. It's his curse.
I spent the whole book thinking that he was some sort of secret witch, and was left disappointed on that front. MAYBE I wanted the grandma to be right a little bit okay? I kept hoping that if Danica checked the profiles, one of them would be Titus.
And finding out what the curse was in the end...I'm not mad. I was just expecting something less simple.
And that brings us to the Waterhouse curse of sorts. Where a witch is destined to lose her magic if she marries a mundane. The resolution for that was also unbelievably easy and it's so hard to believe that no one thought of that before.
Also, going into this, I was not expecting so much steam? But it's a very good thing. A very, very good thing. When I round my rating up you'll know it's for the steam and their chemistry alone.
The romance was, as it should be, the best part of this book. It's what I read it for and I'm content with what we got. Danica and Titus were made for each other.
Other than the witch hunter resolution, I'd like to see more of the coven in the next book(s). They're a riot. And more food descriptions please. I love the treats.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Sadly, I was right. Mind you, I didn't manage to finish the whole book, I dnfed @ 35%. I could've pushed through, maybe all the way to the end, but the audiobook is 18h long, and even sped up it's a lot of time to spend on something I'm not enjoying when I could be reading something else.
In this case I don't think the book is bad or anything like that, it just failed to grip me and I'm not the right reader for it. I'm sure someone else would find it much more interesting. But yeah, I was just bored.
It started off pretty interesting, but I don't know, it could've been the writing style or the audiobook, but it didn't keep my attention as it went on. I think there's a chance I could've liked it more if I read it myself.
But will I give it another try? I'm not sure. It's also possible that this book suffered from something I finished reading right before I started this, and I absolutely loved that book, but I also have days where I read two or three 5 stars back to back so maybe not.

We have three main characters, Vintage, Tormalin and Noon.
I don't like to be deceived by characters into liking them before they do something horrible and that didn't happen here. Everyone stayed as they were in the beginning, just...cooler by the end.
I liked Noon the most, she's my little cinnamon roll. I'd totally fight with her. Tor is next, he's a cool character. In some scenes he reminded me of Apollo from Percy Jackson. Then Vintage, she's my least favourite of the three. We didn't get to know her as well. (view spoiler)[And she abandoned Noon and Tor and didn't come back. (hide spoiler)]
I didn't care much about the PoVs that weren't from the three characters mentioned above, but they helped shape the story in the background all the same.
My most hated character out of all of them, good or evil, is Lin. (view spoiler)[I hope she's dead for good. (hide spoiler)] She got on my bad side by having the misfortune of getting the task to track down Noon, and only dug herself into a deeper hole by calling bats ugly.
Next very very hated character is Hestillion. I just wanted to smack her. I grew so tired of her.
I don't think I even hate anyone else, just those two.
Fulcor gets a special mention BECAUSE BATS ARE SO CUTE!!! NOT UGLY!!! They're fluffy friends who bring you food and let you fly them into the sunset.

I've lost count of how many times I cried while reading this book. Must be somewhere in the 20s range. Even now I'm a blubbering mess.
When I tell you this book has no flaws you better listen, because it's the truth.
I'm blown away, once again, with the world building, character development and the storyline. Charlotte Nicole Davis does not miss.
THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE A SEQUEL! It's so strong and gives a good message of unity, and hope even when all seems lost.
The romance isn't the main focus of the story this time around either which is nice and thoughtful due to Aster's PTSD. But there is a subtle love triangle in the mix.
I shipped Aster with both of them, and I'm glad she ended up with who she did because that person feels so right for her. I'm also happy to see Tansy & Mallow and Clementine and Zee are as in love as ever.
Out of the new characters, well, I love them all. Raven, Derrick, Lizzy, the Nine...
Derrick's growth is so apparent and I'm proud of him for doing all he did. It's hard to stand up to monsters we don't know, but even harder to tackle ones we do. You did so good Derrick. You better live your best life.
What I'd also like to emphasise, is that both The Good Luck Girls and The Sisters of Reckoning have satisfying endings. You can stop at book one, or you can continue into book two and will leave happy (and wrecked for all eternity).
I don't know if there will be another book, due to how this one ended, but I'd very much love if there was, because I haven't had enough of these Reckoners.
In short, this series is amazing and you need to read it ASAP.
