I'm the most disappointed about him actually, because I was expecting to love him and obviously that didn't happen. Everything he said felt forced, unnatural, not sure if that's because one of the authors doesn't normally write dark romance or what but...he just annoyed me, period.
Blair was okay, but I didn't care much for her either. I do kind of feel bad about her new scar though, I think that was a bit too much.
There were some content warnings that didn't appear in the book, but it's possible I missed them? Who knows.
The epilogue hints at a sequel and I'm not sure if I'd read it or not. On one hand, the characters might get developed enough for me to care about them, on the other I have to remember to check back in when it's out and I don't think this story grabbed quite that much of my attention, but we'll see....more

Bloodbath felt very dragged out and slow to me though, I didn't have much of a desire to keep reading, even with the potential reveals hanging over me. I don't feel like the story progressed as much as it was supposed to, except at the very end.
I liked the addition of Omen, and that's about it? I'll still read whatever's next because we've been left on a cliffhanger, but it's definitely going downhill....more

Name one thing more beautiful than this.” His hand grips my thigh, just above my knee. “You, Quinn,” he tells me. “You.”
Okay well, compared to the first novella and the full book this was just eh. Almost all smut again, and the rest of it wasn't as interesting.
The fact that Quinn was assaulted sorta came out of nowhere and I didn't like how that was handled. It's almost like the guys have to kill someone in every single book, so hey let's introduce another person who wronged Quinn so we don't forget how they'll do anything for her.
To be clear, by all means, off the rapist, it's the reenactment I'm referencing.
Anyway, I will still read the second full book and see how I feel about that....more

I asked for plot and I got it!! The first part of this book follows Ghost, Jason and Michael, aka Damien, Jensen and Micah, as they're growing up and befriending each other. Obviously none of that is sunshine and roses.
We also get to see what led to them following Quinn around, keeping her safe for years.
Then there's the novella section, where several chapters are exactly the same as in Scream For Us, while some have been omitted entirely, and others are told from one of the guys' PoVs instead of Quinn's.
And then the final part is what happened after their one night of shenanigans.
I gotta say, I really had a good time with this. I liked the novella, but this was so much more fun, adding more plot DOES make things better! I'm also a sucker for cult stories, real or fictional, so adding that as an element only made me like the story more.
Of course, we didn't get all the answers as to why Quinn needs protection and who she really is (view spoiler)[and how her mother seems to know Damien?? (hide spoiler)], but I don't mind finding that out down the line.
I do wish that we got some more non-repeat scenes though, because I didn't quite feel like rereading the novella so soon, but I guess it's there so people can just jump into this and still have the full story.
About half of the book was the novella, by the way, so you really don't need to read that before this unless you want to. There is one ending scene that wasn't in this, but was in Scream For Us, a conversation that I thought was kinda important, so maybeeee you should read it anyway, I don't know. I mean, it won't impact you if you just start with this, but y'know.
Anyway, I liked the relationship development we got here, not just between Quinn and the guys, but also Jensen and Michael. I'll definitely be continuing the series....more

It's a pretty standard Halloween novella, Masked Men included. It's almost all smut, with a little killing here and there (bonus points for offing the bullies).
Ghostface (or rather the person wearing his mask) was the one who got the most action, then Jason, Michael was kinda in the background most of the time. That probably balances out in the next books, which I'm planning on reading. But yeah, Ghostie was definitely THEE main character of this read.
Hopefully the next one has a bit more plot....more

For how short it was there was a pretty good amount of plot, character development and relationship building so I'm pretty happy with this. Could it have used more of all of the above and been a bit longer? Sure, but I think there was a good balance.
There were three steamy scenes, two with all three of them and one with just Audrey. I like that we had a build up towards them, because even in novellas I want to know why I should care about the characters and their relationships with one another.
I wouldn't mind seeing more of these characters in the future, in another Halloween novella or just seeing how they're getting on now that it's passed....more

I had a feeling it would just be average and for me it was. Maybe I would've felt differently if I read it myself instead of listened to it, but as is I'm not impressed.
There was barely any plot, which sometimes works sometimes it doesn't, I couldn't get attached to the characters, or the romance so what was left was basically just the atmosphere and the writing. I liked the writing, but the atmosphere was barely there, it tried though.
On top, Arthur sounded like he was a billion years old (might be due to the narrator) so I was imagining a full-fledged grandpa or middle aged man and...yeah. Somehow the book felt almost YA, which is normally a good thing for me, but I don't think that's what the author was aiming for here.
If you happen to like Sorcery of Thorns or The Invisible Life of Addie Larue you might have better luck with this than I did....more

But as it went on, my interest in how the story would end diminished.
There's nothing specific wrong with it, it might just be me, so please give this book a chance if you wanted to. But what bugged me was how repetitive it was getting, and how the pace slowed down in the second half.
What I liked was the setting, I think that was very well done and the monstrous things as well. I will always support women's rights and wrongs!!! Also we love a good villain PoV.
If there is a sequel in the future I'm not sure if I'll read it. Maybe? I could see it happening, the found family is cute and I wouldn't mind seeing more of them.

I was immediately drawn into the story by the beautiful writing and spooky atmosphere which continued throughout the book.
The two main characters, a girl and a boy, are turning into monsters and we get to follow them on their journey as they search for a cure. But do they find it?
The descriptions of their transformations are where the horror elements come in I think. The first few times I was like "oh...oH...OHH", it's like one of those creepy things that you just can't look away from (or can't stop reading/imagining, in this case).
There's also a little romance sprinkled in, which I thought was very sweet. The way the boy and the girl go from strangers, to something like friends, to lovers, and the way they protect each other is the cutest thing.
The ending made me silently scream because HELLO I WANT MORE!!!! It's partially an open ending, partially not, I'm still not totally sure what happened, but I'm going to assume it's what I want it to be.
Also, I love the backstory of how this novella came to be, it makes total sense and if you're someone who skips author's notes please read this one!! And read the whole book too!!! This is not a request, I'm forcing you to read it ok? Ok.
But seriously, you should read Your Blood and Bones, it's amazing, and it's short so you have no excuse. GO READ IT WHEN IT'S OUT!!! ...more

I love books that are mostly or partially set in forests because that will never not be creepy. There's so many things that go bump in the night so it's easy to imagine how living next to something like that might make people feel. And especially with the Hickory Man legends they all grew up with.
So basically this is a town where kids go missing, always, seemingly in threes. It's been happening for hundreds of years and no one really knows why, except of course that it must be because of the Hickory Man.
Cheyenne's family has always lived in the woods, and they're sort of the town's protectors. She gets called home when another kid goes missing and gets wrapped up in a mystery for the ages.
We follow her PoV, but also her former best friend Natalie's as well. The two PoVs balanced each other out. I initially wasn't sure if I wanted anyone other than Cheyenne to tell the story, but Natalie won me over pretty fast. Her PoV was just as interesting as Cheyenne's.
What I liked most about this book is the atmosphere and the small town superstitions that got passed down from generation to generation. Why do they carry silver coins or put dirt in their shoes? To protect them from the evil lurking in the trees, duh. I love that.
And the salt, herbs, poppets, crystals, rituals, all of that was interesting to read about and helped build up the spook factor.
There was even a little romance thrown in, with Cheyenne and her first boyfriend Jack. He's very much like a puppy, and I liked the two of them together.
I did guess some things, but I didn't let myself speculate too much, I just went with the flow and it worked well for me. I had a good time.
Until the very end I wasn't sure if the Hickory Man was real or not and after finishing this...ALL I'M GONNA SAY IS THAT THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY SPOOKY THINGS IN THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS OKAY. AND IF YOU HEAR ANYTHING CALLING OUT YOUR NAME FROM THE FOREST NO, YOU DO NOT.
I can't wait to see what these authors (yes, there's 2) put out next. And if they set it in Appalachia again, well, I'll come running.

I finished the first book back in FebI opened Cage of Dreams and I felt like I just came home. I kid you not. I missed this world and its characters.
I finished the first book back in February and had no idea I'd be able to complete this series this year, until a few days before I started reading this.
I was making a physical list of series I need to finish, and, of course, this was one of them. I went to check the release date, found out it was coming out on the 26th of September and I knew I had to read it ASAP. And here we are.
This book was just as chaotic as the first, it was so fun and full of completely ridiculous things that somehow work together brilliantly.
My one and only complaint was that Ness would just repeat herself over and over a lot at the start, how she's scared of everything, she doesn't want to be but she is, she just wants to be safe, but Cy could kick her out, but she knows he won't, but he could and that scares her (along with everything else).
This does mellow out eventually, and Ness gains more confidence in herself and her friends.
I was expecting something to happen on the romance front and nothing really did, but that's also okay. The crumbs we got were very sweet.
The ending was satisfying, but I obviously want a spinoff!!! It's a good set up for one, and I know we haven't had enough of Newham. I'd love to see more of The Nightmare Phantom in action.
If you are reading this, and haven't picked up this duology yet, I don't know what you're doing with your life. ...more

So imagine my delight when I not only got the arc, but also opened it to see titles like Gospa, Gospodar, Knez and Vlastelin inside. It might not mean much to a non-Slavic reader, but I got an extra kick out of it every time someone's title was used, because it worked so well.
Morana was the main featured Goddess here, but I loved seeing other Slavic Gods and Goddesses get a mention (or appearance) too. And I also loved how well the elements they control were used in the story.
Said story was extremely captivating, like a fairytale. In part this is due to the beautiful writing which made me feel like I was sitting down in front of a warm fire, listening to someone spin a tale from long ago.
There's three PoVs in the story, each interesting in their own way. Ida's ended up being my favourite, despite Elisya's starting off as such (I know!). Because I felt like Ida was the most interesting of the three, and I desperately wanted her to be the one to survive the night.
Elisya changed as the story went on, I wanted her to live out her main character dreams, but sadly it was not meant to be. I somehow thought she'd change for the better though, not worse.
Telani got the least amount of chapters, especially during the second half, and I wasn't sure what to make of him until the very end where I started to like him. So I wish his time to shine came a bit sooner, because he's a pretty cool character.
I also liked Tinka, Orsiana and Prince Amron.
I DID NOT like Volk, but with a name like that he deserves a special mention. I was just waiting for him to turn into a werewolf and devour everything and everyone in sight...which isn't too far from the truth.
Him being who he was, and performing that wedding ceremony was so funny to me, but in a dark way. Like yeah obviously there's no one else in an enchanted castle deep in the sentient woods who could do it, but still!
I *think* this is a standalone, but I'd love a sequel or novella where we follow the characters who survived, even the side ones, because there's a lot more story to tell.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes their fantasy a bit darker, or more on the gothic side with a pinch of horror, and particularly to other Slavic readers because this is a story that was written for us.
That's not to say you shouldn't give it a chance if you're not Slavic, please, PLEASE do, I'm just saying that I think it hits harder when you already know the mythology and Gods, grew up with them etc. There's little things here and there you'll catch while reading that will feel like coming home.
P. S. Pay attention to the years in each chapter, they're important!!

I didn't like or dislike it, I have no strong feelings toward it, and I don't regret listening to it. But I do think I probably would've enjoyed it a smidge more if I read it myself, because the narration was monotone in parts.
It didn't feel like I should be on the edge of my seat, more like I was sitting in a coffee shop and someone was telling me a story (which is also an okay vibe, don't get me wrong, just not what I was expecting here).
The book is short, but took a while to get going and during that time I didn't find myself getting attached to any of the characters except Charity.
I really liked the setting though, and the idea was there and it went well during the first half. The second half was a bit...eh? It didn't lose me, and it wasn't bad, but it didn't feel like that second half was the same book as the first half.
The ending was open, but I liked it. And as someone who doesn't normally like open endings - this is a very good thing. It was satisfying.

I thought this would take me longer to get through to be honest, so I'm pleasantly surprised that I finished it this fast. I probably would've finished the whole thing yesterday if some unrelated things hadn't happened. But yeah, it was interesting from the beginning and very bingeable.
I liked the characters and the romance, as well as all the rhymes, they made the book for me and I can't wait to see more of them.
The ending was amazing, it made me consider giving this 5 stars, but ultimately I'm settling on 4 because I can always rate it up the next time I read it if I really do end up loving it that much.
Also, I have no idea if this is YA or adult? Google says adult but people on Goodreads are shelving it as YA and the Amazon categories are also YA, plus it felt very YA (a good thing when it comes to me) so I'm putting it on my YA shelf too.
It won't be my turn to borrow the audiobook of the sequel for a few more weeks, but I really wish I could jump in immediately, I feel like this is one of those stories where you should read the books back to back instead of taking breaks in between but oh well....more

Aglasia is a solitary siren who's set in her ways. She never visits the same hunting spots twice, and only eats those men who deserve it. Things start to change when another siren by the name of Rossa appears in her life out of nowhere.
The two strike up a friendship, which soon turns into a quest to turn a man into one of them. What could possibly go wrong?
This was really really good. Mermaids/sirens aren't my favourite supernatural creatures to read about, but I enjoyed the way they were written here.
The writing is beautiful and transported me straight into the world. I loved the plot/story too, it's unique and I don't remember seeing anything similar before.
The friendship between Aglasia and Rossa was the highlight of the book, their bickering was cute, even though Aglasia's side of it could annoy me at times.
Speaking of Aglasia, she was harder to like at the start and it took me almost the whole book to warm up to her. She'd call Rossa a child while behaving like one herself. By the end she does some growing, so hopefully in the second book (THERE BETTER BE A SECOND BOOK!!!) I'll fully like her.
Rossa was like a ray of sunshine, so you could say she and Aglasia have a grumpy sunshine dynamic, but platonically.
Hunter...I like him and his casual acceptance of all things supernatural, but the poor boy needs more confidence. His romance with Aglasia is sweet, hopefully down the line there'll be more fluff and less angst.
WHAT ELSE CAN I SAY WITHOUT SPOILING ANYTHING? Hmm...Well, you're just going to have to trust me and read this book when it's out, because it's worth it. BUT BEWARE, THERE IS A CLIFFHANGER. Or not a cliffhanger per se, because something does get wrapped up, but this isn't the full story (once again, I'm asking for a sequel).
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take a(n imaginary) dip into the sea and grow a siren tail. Byeee.

Ness lives in a crimeOh, I'm OBSESSED with this book. Which I honestly wasn't expecting but I'm so glad that's the case, because this book is amazing.
Ness lives in a crime filled city where people's worst nightmares happen to wander the street, just your normal, average, every day type of thing.
When people dream, they have nightmares, and when they have nightmares they turn into their worst fear. So one day Ness's own sister forgot to take a pill that prevents dreams and turned into a huge spider that ended up killing their father.
This eventually led fear-filled Ness into joining a totally-not-cultish organisation that provides therapy for nightmares. And this sets off a chain of events which I can only describe as chaotic. I loved every minute of it.
LITERALLY, from the first sentence I was hooked and I didn't want to stop reading.
This book really feels like YA which is a good thing, because a lot of YA books now border NA, but this one is fine for the younger kids to read.
There's a mystery plot in the background, and by the end it makes sense. I didn't really predict any of it which is another plus.
Our main character Ness starts off as a huge coward who's basically scared of her own shadow, but as the book goes on she faces her fears in a way that felt natural. I believed that she was getting braver and braver.
I also like Cy and the Phantom. Both are cool, and I hope they become a trio in the sequel, they'd be unstoppable.
There's a subtle romance happening between Ness and Cy, me being me though I also ship her with the Phantom so we'll see where it goes.
The world is one of my favourite parts of City of Nightmares, it's so well developed and I'd like to live there despite the fact that I could be killed at any moment. But I'd like to live in Gotham too which this city is inspired by soooooo...
The nightmares are a unique concept that was executed perfectly, in my opinion. No one could've done it better.
And this book sends a good message too, that you are not your fears and you shouldn't let them control you.
I AM ABSOLUTELY GETTING A PHYSICAL COPY OF THIS BOOK, not only because I'm obsessed as I said, but also because the cover is gorgeous. I mean JUST LOOK AT IT, SO PRETTY.

ThenMy friend told me the author's newest book, Wildblood was on Netgalley a few months ago, and that she's Serbian so obviously I ran to request it. Then I saw it was a companion book to this duology so, obviously, I had to read it first.
The story takes a while to get going, so I totally get the people who dropped it early, but I think it's worth sticking with, if you have the patience.
The atmosphere is heavy with a capital H, this worked for me though, because I felt like I was also walking through a creepy forest of doom along with the characters the entire time.
Some scenes had my heart beating fast like in the scariest thrillers, and the tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife.
When that story got rolling, I was completely enthralled, needing to know what would happen next, if they'd solve the mystery and come out unscathed.
As a whole, the second half of the book was better than the first, and really hard to put down. As for the first half, I'd say the first third was the slowest so if you make it past that you're in for a treat.
We have three PoVs we follow, that of Miya, Kai and Mason. They each have a role to play and were all interesting in their own way. But I gotta say, in those beginning chapters, Mason's perspective was the most intriguing to me.
The Serbian used in the book was so fun to me, like little Easter eggs. Every time Kai would ask who Gavran is I'd giggle, because I know what that word means and who that character is, but I won't spoil it for people who don't. Also, the author's name being Vrana...I see you.
There were a few other characters with Serbian names like Sashka Lavović and Vuk. Vuk being a wolf shifter was the icing on the cake, it's so on the nose, but it's something I actually don't mind compared to mermaids being called Sirena in other books and/or movies. Also, fun fact, Sashka is a nickname for the name Aleksandra in Serbian.
There were some expressions A.J. Vrana used that I thought were super adorable, like the "chubby hamsters" line, or Ama calling Miya a "peanut". There were more, those are just some off the top of my head.
I have quite a few lines highlighted, but since I read this through Hoopla I wasn't able to screenshot them, so I'll have to get a physical copy at some point to properly annotate.
Leaving the romance for last because it's one of my favourite parts of the book. I loved seeing Kai and Miya falling for each other, the way they joked around and took care of one another, I can't wait to see more of that in the next books.
The ending wrapped everything up nicely, so you could stop reading at this book if you wanted to, or continue with book two if you want to see more of this world, like I do. I was a bit scared it wouldn't be wrapped up and we'd be left on a huge cliffhanger, even though I literally have the second book ready but still!! Either way, I'm glad I don't have to wait to jump back in, and then jump in again.
Give this series a chance okay!! It may surprise you....more

For the first 11% or so I could tell it was good, OH! MY! WORMS (Yes, I had to mention the worms)! THIS WAS AMAZING, BRILLIANT, SENSATIONAL AND SO ON.
For the first 11% or so I could tell it was good, but wasn't sure how much I'd like it, and then it just kept getting better and better and now it's one of my favourite books. So if you feel like clocking out early you can, but I'd suggest you keep reading because it's so worth it.
The chapters have titles and some of them are hilarious, as is Sean's personality. He likes to assign things and people (and aliens) names in his head and constantly makes jokes, even when faced with near death.
Sean is also very kindhearted and never loses that which I think sends a good message. He's always for doing the right thing and that makes me so happy.
Indigo is ADORABLE. His past actions aside, you can't convince me otherwise. I love him and his light language.
OH YES, since I mentioned languages, Sean is good at them and is basically surviving with just that ability which gives me confidence in my own language learning abilities. If Sean can make it through a walking death trap, then I can surely make it through everyday life as well.
Tamara is the last member of our little trio, and you know what? I love her too. I love everyone, all the characters, it's impossible not to. Anyway, she's this hardened soldier who softens up during her reluctant alliance with Sean and Indigo. She does what needs to be done, and has some secrets of her own.
The plot was so compelling that I had a hard time putting the book down. I read it in two sessions, the second only necessary because I started the book too late the first time and was getting sleepy near the end. Otherwise I would've binged the whole thing in one go, it's that type of book.
Every situation the characters find themselves in could potentially lead to certain doom, the chapters aren't long which also makes it easier to keep going and a lot of them end in mini cliffhangers so you just HAVE TO know what happens next.
Speaking of cliffhangers, there's a huge one at the end. I NEED THE NEXT BOOK ASAP!!! I fell in love with this world and the characters inhabiting it and I'd love for it to have several sequels, spinoffs and movies. Or a tv show instead of movies, because then all the cool details could make it in.
If you like twists at every turn, space ships filled with monsters and the found family trope THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU!!! GO READ IT. GO. NOW. GO.
