I don’t know how I missed the Theranos scandal in the news, but this is the first time I heard about this. I learned a ton. And it’s strange: even knowing how it was going to end, I still couldn’t help getting sucked in by the promise of the technology and how cool it could’ve been.

Lucy is our intrepid reporter: she's not from Phoenix, but she can feel Phoenix becoming a part of her, and she gets caught up in the destruction as the city is on the brink of collapse.
Maria, maybe my favorite character, is a girl who escaped from Texas only to be trapped in a life she doesn't want in Phoenix.
The three converge, and then the story happens quickly.
If I could have, I would've read this in a single sitting. Bacigalupi tells this story realistically that you realize how close it could be.
